Cal Poly Performance Horse Sale Our sale produces student ridden horses that excel in a variety of events!

The Quarter Horse Enterprise Project and Sale is managed entirely by Cal Poly students. Each year 15 - 20 students are selected to start and train Cal Poly bred Quarter Horses, along with some donated horses. The project horses are trained completely by the students and are geared towards both performance and ranch work. Our goal is to produce a versatile, quiet and talented horse that can be used

for a variety of equine activities. The proceeds from this sale will support the equine educational programs at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo.

Next up, we have the amazing Jaimie!

Jaimie Knode is a third-year Animal Science major on the pre-vet track. She began riding at age eight and grew up riding many disciplines, but has excelled in Western Horsemanship. She has been on the Cal Poly Equestrian team for the last three years and currently serves as the Western Show Team Captain. For her first year in Quarter Horse Enterprise, she looks forward to learning from her peers and all of the professionals who contribute to this amazing program.

Next up, we have the blissful Brieze!

Brieze is a fourth-year Agricultural Business major. She grew up riding horses on her family’s black Angus cattle ranch in northern California. In the past few years, she has developed a love for young horses and has worked many hours with her grandma, who trained all of the ranch and rodeo horses her family rode when she was growing up. This is her second year in Quarter Horse and she is excited to continue her path with young horses.

Claire Fitzgerald is a third year animal science student on the pre-veterinary track. She has been riding horses most of her life. With foundational skills in equitation and english show jumping, Claire has ridden in various disciplines, currently focusing on reining and cow horse. Entering her second year in the enterprise, she is excited to hone her horsemanship skills, enhancing the horse-human connection and interaction, and growing as a rider.

Up next, we have the spectacular Serafina!

Serafina is a fourth-year Agricultural Communications major. This is her second year doing the quarter horse enterprise. She has been riding her whole life and has been actively training with Phillip Ralls for nearly 5 years. Serafina has won the national championship title for the non-pro limited boxing division in 2023 and made the World Finals in 2024, placing 9th overall. Serafina has been riding with the Cal Poly Equestrian Team since 2023 which has proven to be a successful endeavor.

Up next, we have the astounding Sage!

Sage is a third year Animal Science major and is in her second year with the Quarter Horse Enterprise. She has been riding since age 8 and competes in hunters. She started her first horse in middle school and has been working with young horses ever since. Nowadays, she rides her three horses daily, enjoys trail riding, and works at an Arabian show barn starting young horses. Sage is eager to continue learning and growing throughout this enterprise.

Next up, we have the wonderful Jen!

Jen is a fourth year at Cal Poly and pursuing an Agricultural Business degree. She has been riding since she was four, participating on drill teams, performing in hunter/jumper shows, and working with her trainer. Though she started riding English, her interests expanded to riding Western in college. Jen also has a passion for training horses as she enjoys the rewarding experience. As a second year Quarter Horse Enterprise student, she is excited to continue developing her skills and learning from her peers.

Next up we have the dream team, CalliAnne Van Dam and Ellie Hilzer!

CalliAnne is a fourth year animal science major on the pre vet-track. She began riding in high school, competing in Western and English 4-H shows in horsemanship, ranch riding, and also developed a passion for rodeo queening. At Cal Poly, she serves as the equestrian team president and has competed on the western show team each year. This is her second year in the Quarter Horse Enterprise and she is excited to work with these talented horses and contribute to the success of this year’s sale!

Ellie is a fifth year landscape architecture major and is excited to be helping out during Winter quarter. Although she has tried almost every discipline, she currently enjoys showing her horse in reined cow and ranch horse events and riding with her family. She served as a 2024 QH student manager and she is extremely proud of everyone continuing in the program this year. This is her third year in the Quarter Horse Enterprise and she can not wait to spend her last quarter with all these amazing people and talented horses.

Next up, we have the amazing Maura!

Maura is a fourth year animal science major. She has been riding for most of her life competing in the hunter jumper disciplines and three day eventing before coming to Cal Poly. In recent years she has enjoyed exploring western riding and working with young horses. This will be her second year in the Quarter Horse Enterprise and she is looking forward to learning from this talented group of horses and student riders.

Today, we introduce the first of our wonderful student team, the lovely Tess!

Tess is a sixth year Environmental Management and Protection major with a minor in Equine Science. She grew up riding both english and western, but has more recently been interested in reined cow horse and ranch versatility. In addition to the Quarter Horse Enterprise, Tess has also become involved in the Foaling and Breeding enterprises during her time at Cal Poly and hopes to pursue a career in the Quarter Horse breeding industry focusing on performance horse bloodlines. This is her third year participating in the Quarter Horse Enterprise, and it’s a program she holds very close to her heart.

Finishing up our horse managers is Elyse Evers!

Elyse Evers is a fourth year animal science major with a minor in sustainable agriculture. Raised in SLO, she began riding hunter jumpers but switched to western riding to work cattle and learn how to rope. This is her second year of the quarter horse enterprise and will be her first year as a horse manager. She is excited for all of the opportunities and memories that this year holds!

Our next horse manager is Maggie!

Maggie is a graduate student in the Master of Agricultural Education program. She grew up riding in 4-H, competing in a variety of disciplines, and working with Mustangs. She now continues to work with young horses and competes in Three-Day Eventing. This is her second year in the Quarter Horse Enterprise, and first year as a manager. She is excited to go through this extremely rewarding process again and continue to grow through all the opportunities.

Now for the first of our 2025 horse managers, we have Josie!

Josie is a 5th year civil engineering major and is thrilled to serve as one of this year’s student managers. She has been riding since a young age and is very passionate about spending time with horses. She currently enjoys riding her own -P horse that she started in the 2023 sale and also manages the foaling enterprise. This is her third year in the Quarter Horse Enterprise and she is eager to further develop her horsemanship skills alongside a great group of people and talented young horses.

Rounding out our wonderful sale managers, we have Madison!

Madison is a fourth year Animal Science major with a minor in Environmental Studies. She rode intermittently for most of her childhood, before coming to Cal Poly. Since being at Cal Poly, Madison has become involved in an array of equine activities, from competing on the Western Show Team to creating the Mule Packing Club and competing annually at Mule Days in Bishop, CA. This is her second year in the Quarter Horse Enterprise and she is thrilled to be a manager of our amazing sale this year!

Next up, we are thrilled to share with you another one of our 2025 sale managers, Claire!

Claire is a fourth year Animal Science major with a Biotechnology minor. She grew up with horses in her backyard and has two mini donkeys. Since coming to Cal Poly, she has expanded her love of all things equine including co-founding the Cal Poly Mule Packing Club. After graduation, she hopes to go to vet school to specialize in equine medicine. This is her second year in the Quarter Horse Enterprise and she is excited to learn more and become a better horsewoman, especially as a sale manager!

We are kicking off student introductions with one of our 2025 sale managers, Jacquelyn!

Jacquelyn is a graduate student in the Master of Agricultural Education program. She has enjoyed riding and showing horses since she was young and has a background in both English and Western disciplines. She owns two -P sale graduates and competes in ranch versatility, working equitation, and western dressage. This is her third year in the Quarter Horse Enterprise and she is looking forward to helping this group of students and horses succeed together in her role as a student sale manager!

Jacquelyn is focusing on management this year and is pictured here with her very own -P horses, Sayonara Big Sky (left, 2024 graduate) and Ranger Wild Card (right, 2023 graduate).
