Cat Behavior Solved

Cat Behavior Solved Info on cat behavior & other useful cat stuff. Goal:help humans & cats live harmoniously together so

I have felt deeply connected to animals ever since I was a child and decided I wanted to work with animals professionally as an adult. Upon moving to Hawaii in 2010, I worked at a veterinary clinic where I received amazing on-the-job training. It was working there that solidified my passion for animals and inspired me to pursue my Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Science from the University of Hawa

ii. While pursuing my degree, I worked for a high-volume, open admission shelter where I personally admitted over 10,000 animals! After finishing college, my husband and I moved to California where I am currently working for an open-admission shelter as an Animal Health Specialist. I love my current job, as I am tasked with improving the lives of animals while they are in the shelter and working with animals behaviorally to help them get adopted! Because I can’t get enough animal time I also spend one of my weekend days working with a doggy hiking camp! Although the focus of my blog is cat behavior, I work with, and have been trained to help, a variety of animals. This blog is a place for me to share my tips to help improve the lives of your feline friends. I draw on my formal education, work experience, and years of reading and following cat behavior experts to provide unique suggestions that I have utilized to improve the lives of hundreds of cats, including my own kitty, Sophie.
I take a science-based approach to understanding and modifying animal behavior. Whenever possible, I cite scientific research relevant to the advice I am giving. My goal is that I can be your go-to source for education about your cat’s behavior and for tips on modifying any unwanted behaviors. Thanks for visiting and feel free to contact me with questions!

When you punish a cat for exhibiting a behavior you don’t like, it doesn’t stop the behavior. First, it’s important to understand that regardless of how unwanted the behavior is, it serves a purpose for the cat. Your cat isn’t scratching on the sofa or jumping on the counter just to make you mad. Animals engage in behaviors that serve a function (i.e. a pay-off). Additionally, many of the behaviors cat parents view as unwanted, such as furniture scratching, are normal, natural behaviors. When you sq**rt the cat with water for scratching the furniture you may momentarily stop the behavior but the cat has a normal and natural need to scratch. If he gets punished every time he attempts to engage in a normal behavior, he will probably become afraid of you and he’ll also continue the behavior in secret. That’s a very stressful combination.

Chouchou is ✨thriving✨ right now!

Can I tell you something? A big fear I have is that people will fall in love with Chouchou online…and then want to buy Persian cat. So please know that if you love kittens like Chouchou, the last thing on earth you should do is support the breeding of Persian cats!

Persian cats are bred to have unnaturally flat faces for no reason other than the aesthetic preference of humans. But this brachycephaly leads to many problems for them, including respiratory issues, eye issues, and often congenital abnormalities including cleft palates, like Chouchou has. Unfortunately most of the kittens born with these medical problems will not be lucky like Chouchou—they will suffer and die as newborns, because it is very difficult and not cost efficient to save a kitten like Chou. Kitten deformities & death are just part of the cost of doing business for a Persian breeder! In fact, Persian cats have the highest infant mortality rate of any breed, according to research.

So while I’m happy that we all love Chouchou, I just want to continually emphasize that Chouchou’s story isn’t one about how Persian cats are desirable animals. His story is about why no one should ever, ever support the breeding of Persian cats. The truth is that most people have no idea what they are supporting, or getting themselves into, when buying a Persian kitten. But babies like him don’t deserve to suffer or die just so someone can make a quick buck off of the ignorance of others.

P.S. Don’t believe me that these cats are often born with cleft palates? Check out who is raising another little Persian kitten named Cabbage with the same exact problem (I’ll pop Cabbage’s photos in the comments.) Cabbage and Chouchou are two of the lucky few who live to have someone tell their story, and to advocate on behalf of those who are less lucky than them. If you love them, please — never breed or buy these flat-faced cats. ♥️

My website is currently down.
Registerdotcom said I didn’t renew my domain (which I did) and they transferred my domain to New Venture Services who is not making my domain available. When I Google it, it turns out the two companies are in kahoots and this is a scam to get you to buy the domain back for a bunch more money.
I will slowly be adding my blog posts to my other company’s website, petbehaviorsolved.com, but it will take some time.
If you have any specific cat questions please email me at [email protected]
I appreciate your patience.
