Big boy Biggie is in search of his forever home! He has been through an intensive board and train here at NCC so his obedience is dialed in and reactivity is in check. He is neutral to other dogs at distance but will not hesitate to get aggressive if a dog invades his space…. Best suited to be the only dog in the house. He has lots of drive and loves to play! Check out Coco (right), here with her owner Linda during today’s training session! At just 10 months old, this pup has come a long way since starting lessons with us at 4 months. Back then, Coco was quite reactive to both humans and dogs, but thanks to Linda’s commitment and the techniques she’s learned, Coco is transforming into a fantastic family pup!

Today, we focused on socialization and obedience around another dog, and let me tell you—Coco absolutely crushed it! We’re incredibly proud of their progress and can’t wait to keep building on this momentum together. Stay tuned for more of Coco’s journey as she continues to shine! 🐕✨

Uhtred is one of our newest additions to the Board & Train Program. In two weeks he will learn all of his reward markers, correction markers, manners, impulse control and basic obedience commands (sit, down, heel, place, leave it, name recall and stay for all commands). He is excelling and enjoying the training process!

SkillBridge attendee working on building civil aggression during a training session focusing on Personal Protection skills. Within this session he conducted drive shifting drills.

In bitework training, drive shifting involves transitioning a dog from a prey drive, where they are focused on chasing and biting the training decoy, to a defensive drive where they are more cautious and protective. This helps to develop a well-rounded dog that can adapt to different situations and follow commands even when their instinctual drives are high.

The ability to shift drives is particularly important in protection dog training, as it ensures that the dog can transition from a calm, obedient state to a protective state when necessary, and back to a calm state once the threat has passed. This requires a deep understanding of dog behavior and careful, consistent training.

Drive shifting can be quite complex and should be undertaken with the guidance of a professional dog trainer to ensure it is done correctly and safely.

Luna and Lucy “The Golden Girls” are finishing up their board and train for obedience and manners. They were trained and handled by members of our Department of Defense, SkillBridge Program here at North County Canine Training. The Department of Defense SkillBridge program is an initiative designed to help service members transition from military to civilian careers. It allows eligible service members to participate in civilian job training, apprenticeships, and internships during their last 180 days of service. The program partners with various employers and training providers to offer opportunities that align with participants’ skills and career interests. By gaining hands-on experience in a civilian work environment, service members can enhance their resumes and increase their chances of securing employment after leaving the military. SkillBridge is beneficial for both service members seeking a smooth transition and employers looking to hire skilled and disciplined workers.
