03/21/2024

SkillBridge attendee working on building civil aggression during a training session focusing on Personal Protection skills. Within this session he conducted drive shifting drills.

In bitework training, drive shifting involves transitioning a dog from a prey drive, where they are focused on chasing and biting the training decoy, to a defensive drive where they are more cautious and protective. This helps to develop a well-rounded dog that can adapt to different situations and follow commands even when their instinctual drives are high.

The ability to shift drives is particularly important in protection dog training, as it ensures that the dog can transition from a calm, obedient state to a protective state when necessary, and back to a calm state once the threat has passed. This requires a deep understanding of dog behavior and careful, consistent training.

Drive shifting can be quite complex and should be undertaken with the guidance of a professional dog trainer to ensure it is done correctly and safely.

03/12/2024

When you’re training your dog to go to a specific place, it’s important to understand that the “place” can be anywhere you choose. This could be their bed, a specific room, or even a large boulder along your walking route.

If you want to introduce a new area as your dog’s “place,” here are some steps to follow:

1. Introduce the New Area: Start by letting your dog explore the new area. Allow them to sniff around and get comfortable with the space.

2. Start Training in the New Area: Once your dog seems comfortable, start the place training process. Use the same command as you did with the previous “place,” and guide your dog to the new area.

3. Give Rewards: As always, reward your dog when they follow your command and go to their new “place.” This positive reinforcement will help them understand what you want them to do.

4. Practice Consistently: Practice this new command regularly. Consistency is key in dog training.

5. Gradually Increase Difficulty: As your dog gets more comfortable with their new “place,” start adding in distractions and increasing the distance from which you give the command.

6. Release Command: Don’t forget to give a release command when it’s okay for them to leave their “place.”

Remember, moving a dog’s “place” can be confusing for them at first, so be patient. Keep the training sessions short and positive, and eventually, your dog should start to understand that this new area is their new “place.”

It’s also worth noting that the “place” doesn’t always have to be a static location in your home. If you travel frequently or take your dog to different locations, a portable mat can serve as a “place” that provides consistency for your dog. Wherever you lay down the mat becomes their “place,” making it easier for them to understand what’s being asked of them.

Cash is finishing up his three week Board and Train this week. This handsome guy has come a very long way in three short weeks. His dog and human reactivity was out of control and created a lot of stressful situations for the owner. He is now extremely obedient, socially neutral and handler engaged! Excited for the new found future that Cash will be able to enjoy with his owner. If you have any questions regarding our Training Programs please contact us at (760) 750-0109 or visit our website at NORTHCOUNTYCANINETRAINING.com

Meet Cato! Cato is a 6 year old Czech Shepherd that came to us with a little bit of… well let’s say… attitude problem. He has only three legs because of very unfortunate accident while chasing a lawn mower. The lawn mower may have taken his leg but it did not break his spirit. This guy is a ton of fun and so ready to work. He will be with us for 8 weeks total so we can establish some boundaries and tune up his obedience. We are absolutely in love with this guy. Stay tuned for Cato’s progress along the way.
