I’ve had the privilege these last few months to help a couple find a breed that works for them, and then find a responsible breeder. And yesterday, at 9 wks old, Lolly arrived at her new home. She’s a Staffie and ridiculously tiny and, of course, super adorable. She had her first training session, just starting to teach her the secondary reinforcer they will be using and potty training. I got my fill of puppy snuggles, without having to deal with the potty accidents and interrupted sleep myself. I call that a win win. 💕😁

As your dog retrieves the first...second...third...maybe fifth or sixth ball, his muscles start to tire and soon they reach overload, where they no longer can fully control and support your dog's movements. Now, when your dog does those amazing athletic maneuvers to snag the ball, soft tissues like the cranial cruciate ligament, iliopsoas muscle and tendon, and the muscles and ligaments that support the vertebrae are overstretching. Minor tears are occurring. Now the ball is thrown 10, 12 times or more and ultimately your dog lies down, exhausted.
That period between when your dog's muscles are in overload, and when your dog lies down exhausted, is the injury zone (Figure 1). But remember, with all that adrenaline, your dog doesn't feel the injuries happening, so you have no idea that the tissues are being used beyond their capacity.
When this game is repeated day after day, month after month, the small tissue tears become large ones, and suddenly it becomes evident that your dog is in pain and has an injury. Of course, it hasn't been sudden at all-what seemed sudden is just the final result of repeated stress and strain until the tissues gave way.

We finished our 6 week Agility Foundations class last week. This was an amazing group of people and dogs. Sadly one dog has to drop out after a coyote attack. 😞 (He will be OK, but be careful out there with your smol dogs!) All the dogs came to my class with the ability to work and focus around other dogs and it showed! I’m so happy most of them will continue on to the Beginners class. We had a toy Pomeranian, doodle, Aussie x2, Aussie mix, and little white fluffy Len. Jinx did so much better yesterday when working on staying calm around other dogs doing agility. This past week we worked a lot on self-regulation and self-control. A lot of go and stay on your place games, “It’s your choice” games, taking turns with Charm games. Things we work on intermittently, but really focused on this week. I also only used food when practicing agility. He still works willingly, but food is lower value. Tug toys create big feelings in him. We don’t want those right now. And then yesterday morning he had a 3 hour play date, where both his socialization needs and moving his body needs were met. Like last week, he got to run on the field, play agility (for food!) and swim beforehand. That’s a lot of work and planning! But it payed off yesterday. The next couple of weeks I will be working on getting Jinx to stay under threshold when another dog is doing agility. We started last night, after he got to run around, play agility and swim and it was … Not great. We had to move all the way diagonally across the street and he still could barely hold it together. It doesn’t help of course that another trigger, cars driving by, is impossible to avoid. This was the best I got and it didn’t last long.
