Our sweet little patient Emi is getting a schirmer tear test done. One of several diagnostic tests done at our initial exams.

By placing the paper strips under the eyelids for about a minute, we can get a measurement of absorption. The cornea is nourished by the tears so we want to make sure there is adequate amount being produced.

When the eyes start producing a thicker discharge, this could be the eyes trying to compensate for a lack of tears.

WHAT IS A CATARACT?
A cataract is an abnormality of the lens in which an opacity or a cloudy change of the tissue prevents
light from reaching the retina.

A cataract can take on a variety of appearances, ranging from small dots to cracked-ice, a diffuse haze, a
pearl-like sheen or white streaks. The cataract might start as small dots that progress to include larger
areas of the lens. The rate of progression is difficult to predict and might be very slow or very fast.

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU SUSPECT A CATARACT?
If you suspect that a cataract is forming in one or both of your pet’s eyes, call us at Eye Care for Animals
and arrange to have your pet examined by one of our veterinary ophthalmologists.
Because a complete ocular exam involving all structures of the eye is required to fully evaluate the
cataract and the prognosis for surgery, the earlier we see your pet the better.

This week is Veterinary Practice Manager Week!

Meet Lehua, our San Marcos Practice Manager. Originally from Hawaii, she moved to San Diego where she started out as a receptionist for Eye Care for Animals - San Diego in 2017. In 2022, she graduated from Pima Medical Institute where she became a Registered Veterinary Technician. Lehua is married with two beautiful step-daughters and a 16 year old Pomeranian named Kane.
