I did not write this, but sharing these words of wisdom from Amy Issleib:
I have gone to AKC Dog Shows since 1983. I have shown all over the United States. I have learned over the years some very important things about dogs and people.
Dogs:
1. Any day a different dog can win. Their owner/handler is happy. Congratulate them and let them be happy with their win.
2. If you love your dog, you know in your heart, you are happy you are taking your dog home with you. Regardless of the ribbon color or no ribbon at all. The dog does don’t know the difference if they win or lose, they just enjoyed spending the time with you. Refer to #1.
3. There is always a better dog than yours. No dog is perfect. Show your best, try to hide your dogs faults and emphasize its strengths and sometimes you can beat the better dog. Refer to #1.
4. Sometimes you have the best dog there that day. Do not gloat, but be happy knowing you brought the best, even if it is not their day and they don’t get the ribbon they deserved. Win or lose you know the quality of your dog. Refer to #1.
5. It is always rewarding to have a judge you respect or a breeder you value give you a compliment on your dog. Enjoy the moment and refer #1.
People:
1. There are a lot of experienced dog people out there. Some of them are open and willing to share their experience and knowledge with new people. I have been blessed with knowing many of these people, in various breeds, over the years.
2. There are people that think their dogs are the best, always, and no dog should ever beat theirs. These are the people that do not stay in dogs more than five years and are never very happy.
3. There are people who are jealous of others success and have nothing good to say about the successful people.
4. There are those that show up knowing any dog can win are happy for their wins and for others and just enjoy talking dogs and being around other appreciative dog people.
5. People that are in dogs for a long time focus on type 1 and type 4 people. These are the people that will be in dogs for a long time and enjoy every moment of it.
