🐾🛟 SURVIVAL STORIES 🛟🐾

At the end of May, one of our volunteers read about a very sick kitten posted to an east side San Jose Facebook group. The finder had no money or supplies for this tiny kitten found in the middle of a rural road. At just one pound and with bright white fur, she had no chance out there on her own. Outside the jurisdiction of the closest shelter, our volunteer went up into the foothills and brought her to us for medical care. BUTTERFLY was very sick - dehydrated, fully congested, and starving. She also appeared blind during the first few days, but has since made a full recovery with her sight and is doing well in her foster home. Butterfly still struggles with her breathing so she’s having treatment for that and she needs to finish up her necessary medical prior to adoption. We will announce when she will be ready to meet her potential forever family.

It’s always a great time to adopt or foster, but even more so now. We have so many wonderful dogs and cats looking for their forever homes. If you can’t adopt, please think about fostering. 🐾🛟 SURVIVAL STORIES 🛟🐾

Literally a last minute save, one of our fosters alerted us to a mama cat and her 5 one-week old babies that were slated to be euthanized at a Central Valley shelter within the hour. The shelter doesn’t have enough staff to even answer phones, so you have to send a rescue commitment email and hope and pray that someone sees it in time. The cutoff time came and went and we feared the worst. At 3 minutes past the deadline, we received the text saying “send your transport!” Just as the shelter simultaneously emailed us saying that they now belonged to AARF. A volunteer rushed to the shelter and our foster got on the road to meet her. A few hours later the handoff was made and mama SUNNY and her darling littles were on their way to AARF. Sunny is a great mama and once her mom cat duties are done and her babies are weaned, the entire group will be fixed and available for adoption. In the meantime, welcome Sunny, Rose, River, Rainbow, Rocky, and Rain!

🐾💗🐾 HAPPY TAILS - LINZY & SHYLA 🐾💗🐾

These two sweet girls have found their forever home – TOGETHER! We couldn’t be happier. They are incredibly bonded and love each other dearly. From being on the euthanasia list in a high-kill shelter to now living happily-ever-after with their new mom, Sharon, it’s the perfect outcome!

These darling girls have settled into their new home beautifully. They adore their gorgeous backyard and spend their days running around, chasing each other, and dreaming of catching a squirrel or two (even though we know that's never going to happen!). Linzy has taken on the role of queen of the house, while Shyla has blossomed, much to Sharon's delight. Sharon says seeing Shyla come out of her shell "warms her heart."

🐾🛟 SURVIVAL STORIES 🛟 🐾

PEG and PIGGY are a brother/sister pair that needed rescue when they were just three weeks old because the little girl was missing her back foot. The shelter they came from thinks the momcat might have chewed it off when Peg was born (this happens accidentally sometimes when the mom is trying to clean off the newborn) or something was wrapped around the leg at some point and severed it. Whatever the cause, both kittens have been doing great in their foster home. The perfectly imperfect ones needing medical support are right up our alley (and in particular, our medical foster 💗), so we welcomed them into AARF!

The remaining part of Peg’s leg will need a complete amputation of the rest of the dangling bone to provide her more stability and less pressure on her hips. She’ll have this done during her spay surgery and we know she won’t even miss it. We’ve rescued many tri-pods and they do amazing!

Peg is a tiny brown tabby and Piggy is a bi-color long haired tabby. Both are ADORABLE! They are getting close to starting the search for their forever family so we will accept applications for them now if you’d like to be considered for pre-adoption. (Please note that Peg will need a bit longer post surgery to heal from the amputation)

🐾🩷 🐾 HAPPY TAILS - CRICKET & MARSHMALLOW 🐾🩵 🐾

Cricket & Marshmallow, our adorable rescues from last Fall, finally found their forever home. Found by AARF Alumni when she was just a month old, shy Cricket has been waiting for a mellow home to call her own. Around the same time, Marshmallow was found by one of our former fosters at just three weeks old. He was a pre-wean needing more time and support than they could give, so he went to the home of one of our neonate fosters. Once weaned, he joined Cricket in his new foster home. Not related by blood, but they quickly became a pair and we are so happy that they were able to find a forever home together. Their new family has a wonderful calm and sweet energy about them which is just perfect for this pair. Best of luck to Cricket and Marshmallow!

After 7 months as AARF kitties, Milo & Otis found their forever home. Rescued from a colony as young kittens, these sweet brothers are going to be missed by their foster family. Welcome pretty PISTOL to AARF! She comes to us from our rescuer friend when she was rescued several weeks ago in Turlock, where she was found in a parking lot with her very sick brother. Sadly, he did not survive 😞 but this little girl rallied and thrived. After finishing up her quarantine time with her rescuer, she came to AARF. Pistol is quite the pistol, full of energy and tortie confidence! She hit the ground running at her foster’s home with so many kittens her size to play with. Solo no more, she’s having a blast! 🐾💙🐾 HAPPY TAILS - BENJI 🐾💙🐾

Eighteen months ago, we rescued Benji when he was just a few weeks old. Found as a stray, he was immediately taken to Medvet for emergency care due to seizures. Once stabilized, he was transferred to the San Jose shelter. Benji required round-the-clock monitoring, making him in desperate need of rescue.

Thankfully, one of our dedicated medical fosters was available and took Benji under her care. Managing his seizures involved finding the right medication, dosage, and schedule. It was a challenging journey filled with vet appointments, after hours trips to the emergency hospital, specialist appointments, and countless worrying hours. Despite the severity of some of his seizures, which likely caused some brain damage, Benji survived.

Given his medical needs, we decided to remove Benji from our adoptable pet list, allowing him to stay with his foster family. For most of the past 18 months, Benji has been with his dedicated foster mom, Gaby, and her loving family. During a brief period, he stayed with another caring foster family due to a family emergency, but Gaby and her family have been his consistent support. We call this a “foster win” when the foster family decides to make it official and ADOPT!

Benji is now unconditionally loved by his forever family. He has two human brothers and three fur siblings, including little Diego, an AARF alum who came to us paralyzed. This family’s incredible love and commitment shine through in their care for special needs pets. They never gave up, even when the journey was tough.

Benji's story is a testament to the power of love, dedication, and the amazing difference a foster family can make. We are incredibly grateful to Gaby and her family for giving this perfectly imperfect boy the loving forever home he deserves.

🐾🛟 SURVIVAL STORIES 🛟 🐾

Say hello to the Aloha Litter! 🌺🌴🌊 Discovered in a local colony at just about 7 weeks old, they were trapped and taken to the shelter for foster care. Sometimes, to control the impaction of the shelter’s foster program, the shelter will often choose to TNR kittens that are weaned and at surgery weight instead of putting them in adoptions. When the local trapper heard of their fate, she reached out to AARF for help. We just couldn’t bear the idea of having these babies released to a feral life either, so we pulled them into our rescue. Two girls, two boys - all adorable. KAHUNA and KAIPO are the boys of the bunch and their sisters are KALANI and KOLOHE. They have been fixed and ready to start the search for their forever home. We’re accepting applications for them now, apply at aarflove.org! You can also stop by our kitten adoption playroom on Saturdays from 12-3pm to say ALOHA in person! Lana & Sage, the last of a litter of 6 to get adopted, were with us for over a year. A Central Valley rescue that was drowning in kitties and no animal services in their area, reached out for help. Raised by their momcat, the entire litter was healthy and sweet. From adorable littles to gorgeous bigs, we have loved watching Lana & Sage grow and we are so happy that they finally found their forever home. Congrats to Lana, Sage, and their wonderful new family!

💗 MAMA & PUPPY UPDATE 🩵

HEATH, HENRY, ROLO, and SNICKERS are 8 weeks old today! These adorable puppies are healthy, fun, well-socialized, and an absolute joy to be around. Their unique personalities are starting to shine, keeping their foster family entertained with their playful antics.

Mama MUFFIN has done an incredible job raising her babies. It hasn’t been easy for her; she came to us quite emaciated, and her milk supply was often low. When we first rescued this sweet girl, she was very timid and scared of her own shadow. Although she remains wary of men, she is improving day by day. Muffin will need a patient home that can help her continue to build confidence. Having another dog in the home might be beneficial, as she seems to gain confidence having other dogs around. Muffin longs to be loved and included; she has so much love to give in return.

The puppies still have a few more weeks to go before their medical is complete, but we are now accepting applications for them as well as for Muffin.

If we think any of these precious pups would be a good fit for you, one of our adoption counselors will reach out to you. Unfortunately, we cannot respond to everyone who applies.

🐾💗🐾 HAPPY TAILS - CHEWIE 🐾💗🐾

Chewie has a new name for her new life; she is now Pinky. This sweet girl has been in her forever home for a month and has settled in nicely. It took the kitties a little time to adjust to a new family member, but they are starting to come around—they have even started to play with her. Leroy, the family dog, is Pinky’s new BFF. She loves going on walks with him, and she can absolutely keep up!

Pinky’s new parents, Claire and Richard, say that she has brightened up their lives much more than they could have ever expected. She’s fun to be around, and everyone loves her despite her sassiness!
