BEWARE PET OWNERS RE XYLITOL POISONING:
Xylitol / Birch sugar is an an artificial sweetener often found in sugar free gum and also in some yogurts, peanut butter and childrens’ medications. It has been found to be of benefit in sugar free gum in that it prevents cavities. In pets it EXTREMELY TOXIC. It causes a severe low blood sugar level within 30 mins and liver failure by the next day. It is becoming common and causing death in mostly dogs. Please do not have this in your home and let others know.

ALSO KEEP HANDY PET POISON CONTROL (they charge a fee but have excellent info and well worth it): (888) 426-4435 (24 hours a day / 365 days a year).

Plumas Feral Spay/Neuter Project a Success!

On Saturday October 12th, two Quincy non profit rescues, Friends of Plumas County Animals and Plumas Animal Welfare Society came together at Dr. Doyle Rolston's Indian Creek Clinic to help curb breeding in feral cat colonies in Plumas County. Frank Merrill DVM and Michelle Kelly DVM, both former Plumas residents who practiced veterinary medicine in Quincy and who both now reside in the Bay Area, brought in a team of hard working vet technicians from Dr. Kelly's practice to spay/neuter and fully vaccinate 77 cats. The third spayathon brings the total to 215 feral and community cats getting spayed/neutered within the last year.

😱😢We wish we had better news, but the intake of dogs just keeps coming ... and coming ... and coming. Today, February 18, we have 104 large dogs living in space designed to hold 73. This creates a stressful and unsustainable situation for humans and dogs and we desperately need to find new homes for as many big dogs (25+ lbs) as possible today.

That's where you can help - we will be ready for you at Oakland Animal Services today until 3 p.m., with no appointment required. Please stop by and take a dog home with you!

Adoptable dogs: https://www.oaklandanimalservices.org/adopt/dogs/

Foster program info and application: https://www.oaklandanimalservices.org/.../fostering-animals/

We are at 1101 29th Avenue in Oakland. 1/2 mile from the Fruitvale BART station, near AC Transit 20/21/62 at East 12th St and 29th Avenue. We have a parking lot and when it is full there is neighborhood parking or parking at the shopping center across the street.

FEBRUARY DENTAL SPECIAL-
Proper dental care is an extremely important part of your pet’s overall health. Dental Disease is the most common health issue of pets today; it affects 85% of cats and dogs over 4 years of age. Many forms of dental disease exist below the gum line and are not detectable without a thorough cleaning under anesthesia. Untreated infections of your pet’s teeth and gums can lead to abscesses, heart, liver or kidney disease.

Common Signs of Oral Health Problems:
Bad Breath
Sore Mouth
Difficulty Eating
Loose or missing teeth
Pawing or rubbing the mouth
Bleeding gums
Yellow, brown or green tartar on teeth
Excessive drooling

Even if your pet isn’t showing signs of oral health problems, it’s worth getting them a complete oral exam by their veterinarian. They can also help you keep your pet’s teeth clean and healthy to prevent problems in the future.

***DENTISTRY discount of $150 off anesthetic dental cleanings during the month of February***

If your pet is not current on their yearly exam please call us to schedule an appointment with a doctor.
(Due to high demand, the dentistry special can be extended beyond the month of February if dental booking is confirmed by February 28th)

Please call us today for an estimate.

Meet Tiger. She was diagnosed with esophageal strictures early August. She underwent two balloon dilatation procedures that did not result in long-term success. (The photo shows when she was fed by a nasal esophageal tube). We later placed a balloon esophagostomy tube with the kind guidance of Dr. Amy Allen’s endoscopy. Tiger kept that tube in place for 10 weeks and went home the day before Thanksgiving.

Canine respiratory outbreak- There have been news reports regarding hotspots of outbreaks of respiratory infections in dogs in which a small number have been serious enough to result in fatal pneumonia. Most of the cases have been reported in Oregon, Colorado and New Hampshire and some cases in California. We have not experienced any uptick in respiratory illness in dogs at this time. We will keep you posted. A recommendation is to keep all dogs updated on their Bordetella and canine influenza vaccines since those are two respiratory infections that we do have vaccinations for. You can avoid large group gatherings of dogs at this time.
