And that’s a wrap on the 2024 Grouse and Woodcock season for us as Wisconsin ended today. Very thankful to live in the middle of some of the best habitat for these birds! Jack, Pete and I braved the cold temps to go for the last couple of hours. We managed to work 3 birds, and bagged a beautiful bronze colored tail banded ruff. From the hot, dry start to the freezing cold; we’ve been out every chance we got. I found that even 30 minutes after work, brought some of the best memories.

Now on to puppies in a month and training. Thanks for following along.

Wisdom. I wish I’d kept track of how many grouse we’ve worked as a team! 8.5 year old Jack (blue belton)and 7.5 yo Pete. Today we had 3 contacts, with 9 grouse moved; I made good on 2 for them. Thankful for the warm temps to run out the clock on an incredible season!

Celebrating Christmas with my son and his girlfriend today, we went on a walk on our trails with 6 month old Aldo who put on a show pointing 3 grouse which led to his first grouse retrieve and Hannah seeing what this sport is all about. What a wonderful day!

Nice training run with Aldo behind our house, we moved 4 grouse in 200 yards. The first one was smart and jumped up in a tree and watched him circling trying to get her scent. Low temps and snow now will shorten hunts, but every run is enjoyable with no ticks.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I hope you’re all having a wonderful day!

Every Thanksgiving morning I take one Setter, and go for a few hour walk in the grouse woods. Today our 5 month chestnut tri color “Aldo” from Beirl’s Setters got to go. We didn’t move a bird today, but he continues to impress with his natural ability to work the cover edges where the birds would be. We worked up an appetite anyway, got lots of fresh air and I’m very thankful for everything in our lives!

Incredible dog work today from this crew! Pete, Blue Major and Birch. Left to right. Blue nailed a point that produced a true double for me, and I watched in awe as 3 more grouse rocketed over me with an empty gun.
