It’s week! One common mistake that dog owners make is punishing a dog for growling. Never punish a growl. When this happens, it’s not because your dog is bad, but because it needs to communicate extreme discomfort. There are usually many missed signs in the dog’s body language before it ever reaches that point, and there are only so many ways a dog can communicate with us.

Please, please, please pay attention to these early warning signals, especially with children. Your toddler riding the dog like a horse is not cute— it’s the start of your child not respecting a dog’s space. Same goes for lying on top of them, getting in their face, taking their toys, etc.. So many of the outdated “alpha dog” teachings are focused on making your dog submissive, when the real goal should be creating a positive relationship between the two of you. Step one… show your dog a little respect!
