We are just in our second growing season and learning a lot. We deeply appreciate the support of our community with our CSA members and the folks who got flowers from us for Mother's Day and other occasions. As part of giving back to the community, today we gifted 4 teachers who got the most comments in our town group page with flowers. This is to thank them for their dedication to the children of our community. We also thank all you followers for being a part of this.

We kicked off our CSA last week with wine, cheese and cake Coincidentally, we had a ribbon cutting ceromony with the town officials. It was great to catch up with our CSA friends from last year and meet our new members. We had a representative from the CT Dept of Ag join us as well as folks from . To make it convenient for those who live on the other side of town, Zesto will be a pick up location for CSA pickups and bouquet preorders. Details coming soon.

Thank you all for a great launch to this season

The good news is: the rain will be moving out of Newtown by mid morning, so we shouldn't be under rain for both of today's ribbon-cutting activities.

The first of two ribbon-cutting events is happening at 12 pm April 24 celebrating green jobs and green energy generation at Solar of Newtown at 75 Glen Road. Your hosts will be CEO Quinn Hogue and co-founder Jason Campbell and their team.

Then at 3 pm that day, it’s off to tout Great Ring Farm, (corner of Berkshire / Rte. 34 and Great Ring Road) one of the many agricultural contributors to Newtown’s economy and quality of life. Our hosts - Roberta and Chandravir Ahuja - produce everything from goat's milk and eggs, to a variety of traditional New England and ethnic specialty crops, along with flowers. Roberta is also an accomplished pottery maker and will soon be opening an instruction studio here in town!

Hope to see you - and please bring a friend, spouse, colleague, etc.

Dear Farm friends. Some of you live in Newtown and may have already seen this but just wanted to share with the rest that we were featured in the Newtown Bee this week. To our CSA members I can’t thank you all enough because we would not have made it here without your encouragement and support.

Earlier this week we shared some photos of what Great Ring Farm and the neighborhood looked like long ago . Today we are reflecting on our journey into farming that accelerated when we got our goats 4 years ago. If you want to learn more about these captivating creatures Newtown Continuing Ed has an Introduction to Goat Class on Monday, March 5. We are so excited about this upcoming season. The flowers in our low tunnel are doing great. The weather is warming up and we will already start preparing more beds this weekend. In a few weeks we will be planting more flowers (Lisianthus, Stock and Snapdragons) and also some vegetable including Kale and Spinach. A shout out to our CSA members. We are sold out of our "Champion " subscriptions. We still have some other options so do check out https://www.greatringfarm.com/flower-csa-info.html if you are interested. While we eagerly await this season we thought it would be cool to share some photos of what the original Great Ring Farm looked like about 40 years ago.

In our first season, the hectic work pace has not given us much time to update our social media. However, are having lots of fun. We had a bountiful 9th week of harvest - and will lots of flowers to play with, we gave our CSA members a choice of 4 themese for their bouquets. Half opted for Barbie - pretty in pink. A few chose America - Red, White and Blue. Some asked for a regular "Bright Summer" theme and one went with Oppenheimer - Red, Orange and Yellow. Among the flowers we used we had Pink and White Lisianthus, Blue Delphinium, Chocolate Sunflowers - bright red Jacob Cline Monardas and a few bouquets even got our first Eucaplytus of the year. Please vote in the comments on what bouquet you liked best.

While flowers are our commerical "face", goats are an integral part of our DNA. The 2023 kidding season is closing on us. Two of our kids - nicknamed Missy and Tutu's boy went to their new home last Friday. While we were sad to see them leave we are so delighted that they have gone to an excellent home and we can always visit them 😀

This morning we were pleasantly surprised by lots of buds pop iup overnight on our Ranunculus. For weeks, we have patiently (and a little anxiously) cared for these "babies". These beautiful flowers are informally known as "buttercups" for their soft buttery petals. These were not part of our original crop plan though we consider it a high priority for the future given its sheer beauty. We took a risk and "forced" them in early March in our basement and then field planted them early April. We would love to see them blossom next week and be part of our first CSA bouquets. We are growing a variety callled Aviv - and this is what it should look like. Lets see 😀

The farm is buzzing with life. Out of the blue, the Strawberries are bursting and we will see much more fruit than we would have ever guessed. The core flower area is now almost fully completed and we have more than a few thousand flowers planted. The Sunflowers are looking sturdy and are close to budding. The snapdragons have put on a growth spurt. The Lisianthus is growing slowly - think the cool May slowed them (and everybody else). In our next post we will share some close ups. The goats give us delightlful company when we are working in the field - of course on the other side of the fence.:)

Our first bouquet of the season ! A belated Mother's Day stunner for Roberta. All of a sudden the peonies are erupting. We have about 80 peonies of 6 different varities and this one is Shirley Temple. It's breathtakingly beautiful to see the buds open up in the vase. As these were planted last year, we clipped off all the buds except 1 per plant to develop the root system. We haven't even got through this season and I'm already dreaming about next year. :)

FLOWERS ARE COMING :) For the last few months we have been hard at work, starting seeds, preparing beds and transplanting seedlings. Our crop planning spreadsheet tells us to expect blooms between May 28 and June 8. While the plants are all looking healthy we hadn't really seen any buds emerge. All of a sudden this week we are seeing signs of life. While I would not consider this a marketable stem as its too short it brought us great joy. We excitedly look forward to sharing our season with all of you and are especially grateful to our CSA members who have invested in us.

Mother's Day has come and gone - but here at Great Ring Farm we value our mother's all year long.😀 Here's Mia, Ruby and Tutu. Coincidentally, Sunday was the first day we had excess milk to shart making cheese and so we started a batch of Cambozola. (it's a combination of Camembert with Gorgonzola).
