**Thanksgiving Safety Tips**

Gobble Safely with Your Furry Family This Thanksgiving!
Thanksgiving is a time for delicious food, family, and of course, our beloved pets! But before you indulge, keep these safety tips in mind to ensure a happy and healthy holiday for everyone:

At Home:
• Off-Limits Appetizers: Resist those pleading eyes! Wine glasses with alcohol can cause serious health problems if ingested. Keep them out of reach to avoid spills and broken glass.
• Turkey Trouble: Turkey skin and fatty trimmings can trigger pancreatitis in pets, and small bones can cause blockages. Stick to lean, boneless turkey meat in moderation.
• Chocolate Chaos: Baking chocolate is especially toxic for pets, due to high levels of caffeine and theobromine. Keep it (and all chocolate) securely out of reach!

Traveling Tips:
• Car Ready: If you're traveling with your pet, ensure they're secured in a crate or carrier. Never let them roam freely in the car.
• Familiar Surroundings: If visiting family, bring familiar items from home, like a favorite blanket or toy, to help your pet feel comfortable in a new environment.
• Pet-Friendly Destinations: Consider if your host has pets, and choose a pet-friendly location if needed. Research any restrictions or rules beforehand.

Show your furry friends you love them by keeping them safe!

🐾💖MEET BOWIE 🐾💖
This beautiful boy came to us as a lost soul.

He is a 1-year-old mix breed.

He is neutered and has a current Microchip.

We do not know his history with other pets, he would be best in a household without young children.

He is very sweet with all the staff here and loves to play fetch.

He seems to be fully housebroken and knows how to go into a kennel without any issues.

He loves to eat and of course enjoys a good petting.

If you are interested in the handsome boy, please let one of our staff know.

**National Pet Cancer Awareness Month**
November is National Pet Cancer Awareness Month, a time to focus on this serious disease affecting our furry companions. The statistics are startling:
• 1 in 4 dogs and 1 in 5 cats will develop cancer in their lifetime.
• It's the leading cause of death for dogs over 2 years old.

Early detection is key! Many pet cancers are treatable, but the sooner they're caught, the better the outcome.

Signs to watch for:
• Lumps or bumps (not all are cancerous, but get them checked!)
• Unusual weight loss or gain
• Decreased appetite or energy
• Difficulty breathing or urinating
• Sores that won't heal

Schedule regular checkups:
• Annual exams for all pets
• Twice-yearly exams and bloodwork for pets over 7 (especially important for cats!)

Don't wait! Call us at 404-255-8522 or schedule an appointment online for your pet's checkup.

Together, let's fight pet cancer!

Is Your Pet Lethargic, Thirsty, and Peeing More? It Could Be Diabetes!
November is National Pet Diabetes Month, and it's a crucial time to raise awareness about this serious condition.

Many pet owners don't know that their furry friend can develop diabetes, just like humans. While it can affect any pet, older dogs and cats are at higher risk.

Here are some signs to watch for:
• Lethargy (always tired)
• Excessive thirst
• Frequent urination
• Increased appetite
• Weight loss
• Weakness
• Vision problems
• Skin issues

While diabetes isn't curable, it can be managed! Treatment may include insulin injections, diet changes, and blood sugar monitoring.

Early detection is key! If your pet shows any of these symptoms, don't wait. Call us at 404-255-8522 to schedule an appointment.

Let's work together to keep our pets healthy!

**Adopt-A-Dog month**
Open Your Heart, Open Your Home: Adopt a Dog This October!

October is National Adopt-a-Dog Month! This is the perfect time to celebrate the incredible bond between humans and dogs, and to consider welcoming a furry friend into your life through adoption.

Why Adopt?
• Save a life: Every year, millions of dogs end up in shelters, with many facing euthanasia due to overcrowding. Adoption creates space for more animals in need.
• Unique companions: Shelters are overflowing with amazing dogs of all breeds, ages, and personalities! Your perfect match is waiting.
• Endless love and loyalty: Rescue dogs shower their families with unconditional love and companionship.

Celebrate Adopt-a-Dog Month by:
• Adopting! Visit your local shelter or rescue (link to local shelter or rescue) or search adoptable dogs by zip code at Petfinder.com.
• Microchipping your pet: This helps reunite lost pets with their families.
• Spaying/neutering your pet: Prevents unwanted litters that could end up in shelters.

Ready to open your heart and home? Give a deserving dog a second chance at happiness!

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month!

Did you know your furry (or feathery!) friend can experience pain just like us? This September, the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management wants to raise awareness about both acute and chronic pain in animals.

Here's why it matters:
• Chronic pain can be sneaky: Unlike obvious injuries, chronic pain might be mistaken for "getting old" or "slowing down."
• Signs to watch for: Heavy panting, decreased activity, reluctance to jump (cats), excessive licking, and difficulty standing after lying down.

At Animal Hospital of Sandy Springs, we take pet pain seriously. If you notice any of these signs in your pet, call us for an exam at 404-255-8522.

It's National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day! 🩺

Did you know cats visit the vet WAY less often than dogs? According to the American Humane Society, feline friends go about half as much!

Often, this means kitty health problems go unnoticed until they're more serious.

Here's why regular vet checkups are purrfect for your cat:
• Early detection: Regular exams can catch potential issues before they become major problems.
• Preventive care: Vaccinations and medications keep your cat healthy and protected. ️
• Baseline health: Knowing your cat's "normal" helps identify changes quickly.
• Feline finesse: Cats are masters of disguise! Regular checkups ensure any discomfort doesn't go unnoticed.

Is it time for your cat's checkup? If it's been over a year, or you can't remember the last visit, make an appointment today! ️

Schedule online or call us at 404-255-8522!

**National Immunization Month**
August is all about staying healthy and up-to-date on vaccinations, and that includes our beloved pets! While keeping ourselves protected from diseases is important, ensuring our furry companions are immunized is just as crucial.

Vaccinating your pet is a simple and affordable way to safeguard their health in several ways:

* Shields them from life-threatening illnesses:Vaccines prevent many serious diseases that can be devastating for pets, like distemper, rabies, and parvovirus.
* Stops the spread of nasty diseases: Vaccinations not only protect your pet but also help control the spread of diseases that can be carried by wildlife and even transmitted between humans and animals.
* Safe and effective: The benefits of vaccinations far outweigh any potential risks. Adverse reactions are very rare and usually mild and short-lived.
* Essential for all pets, even indoor ones: It's a common misconception that indoor pets don't need vaccinations. Diseases can be spread through open windows or even by you carrying them in on your clothes or shoes.

Wondering which vaccinations are right for your pet? Your local veterinarian is the best resource! They can recommend a personalized vaccination schedule based on your pet's age, overall health, and lifestyle.

Here at Animal Hospital of Sandy Springs, we're passionate about keeping your furry family members healthy! Give us a call at 404-255-8522to schedule an appointment and discuss your pet's vaccination needs

**National Pet Fire Safety Day – July 15 th **
Did you know that nearly 1,000 house fires are accidentally started by pets each year? On National Pet Fire Safety Day, take a moment to "pet-proof" your home against fire hazards. Here’s what to keep an eye on:

1. Candles and open flames: Always extinguish them before leaving the room. Consider using flame-less candles, but if you prefer real ones, never leave your pet unattended around them. Cats, in particular, can knock over candles with their tails.

2. Stove k***s: According to the National Fire Protection Association, stove tops are a leading cause of pet-related fires. If your pet can reach the k***s, remove them when not in use to prevent curious paws from turning them on.

3. Glass water bowls on wood decks: This might seem unusual, but the sun’s rays can focus through glass bowls and ignite the wood below. Opt for ceramic bowls when outdoors.

In the event of a fire, inform firefighters that you have pets inside. Use a window cling on a front window to indicate the number and types of pets in your home.Protect your pets and your home! Take these steps today, share this post to help spread awareness, and call us at 404-255-8522 for more information or to book an appointment.

Welcome to Animal Hospital of Sandy Springs!

Expert Veterinary Care in the Atlanta Area!

Owning a pet is about so much more than just sharing your home with an animal. It’s about friendship, camaraderie, loyalty and unconditional love. It’s about putting another creature’s needs before your own; opening your heart and baring your soul.

It’s about communicating without words, but with a pat of the head, a scratch behind the ear, a wag of the tail or that deep, throaty purr.

Nobody understands this special bond you share with your pet better than our team.
