While awe-inspiring for people, loud explosions and whistling effects of fireworks often leave pet owners with howling, barking, and trembling pets.

This can be particularly difficult for pets already suffering from stress and anxiety. Your pet’s experiences and genetics determine how they will respond, and the fear of loud noises can worsen over time if not treated.

Hugo is the Atlanta Humane Societypet this week!

Hugo is a sweet and affectionate 4-year-old domestic shorthair mix. He enjoys playing with toys—especially wands—and loves to explore everything around him. His favorite spots are on his cat tower, where he can monitor the activity around him, and in a cozy hiding spot, where he can take a break from the world. He’s incredibly smart and food-motivated, so his forever family may be able to teach him a few tricks! Hugo has a big personality and isn’t afraid to let you know when he wants some attention, but he also doesn’t mind being left alone during the day. Hugo does OK with other cats but would do best in a home without young children. It’s tempting to indulge our pets during the holidays but it’s best to keep them on their regular diet! Dogs can get pancreatitis from eating Santa’s milk and cookies or just being fed food from different family members.

Andros is the Atlanta Humane Society Pet of the Week.

Andros is an 11-year-old Labrador retriever mix, but don’t let his age fool you—he’s full of energy! He loves running around a big yard, going for long walks, and chasing tennis b alls. He’ll play fetch for hours if you let him but he also understands when it’s time to settle down for some couch time. This gentleman is charming, affectionate, and great at giving lots of kisses. Because he’s a little older, Andros comes with some major perks. He’s completely housebroken, knows basic commands, and does well in the car. He enjoys meeting new people and while we don’t have any history on how he does with children or other pets, he seems interested in them. Our team can help facilitate a meet and greet with your family. Andros is ready to be the ideal companion for you!
