Did you know that flamingos have incredible vision?🦩👀

Their eyes are actually larger than their brains, giving them a wide field of view. They also see in color, which helps them find food in the water. Flamingos are known for their vibrant pink hue, which comes from the carotenoids in their diet. How cool is that? 👀✨

➡️ Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS) or Dry Eye

Dry eye, or Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca (KCS), is a condition that leads to abnormal tear production and can cause discomfort, redness, and thick discharge in your pet’s eyes. Chronic allergies are often a culprit, leading to inflammation in the tear glands and a slow decline in tear production.

Without proper treatment, dry eye can cause corneal scarring, ulcers, and even permanent vision loss. For most dogs, this condition requires lifelong management with medications, but there are surgical options available for severe cases. Speak with your veterinary ophthalmologist to learn more.

Did you know that Indian elephants have unique vision?

Despite their large body size, their eyes are relatively small. Their vision is adapted to low light, allowing them to see well at dawn and dusk. With a wide field of view, they can see a broad area around them, though their depth perception is limited. Interestingly, Indian elephants rely more on their excellent sense of smell and hearing than on their eyesight.

Did you know dolphins have incredible vision? Dolphins can see both above and below the water thanks to their special bifocal vision. They use echolocation, or biological sonar, to navigate and hunt in murky waters.

Unlike humans, dolphins can see in shades of blue and green, but not red. Additionally, their eyes adapt well to low-light conditions, helping them hunt at night or in deep waters.

It’s Monday, but this smile says it’s going to be a great week! 🐶😁

Meet Jack, a 4-year-old Frenchie who became a one-eyed wonder after trauma to his left eye. In May, he developed glaucoma and anterior uveitis in his right eye, leading his owner to make the tough decision to remove it. Just a week later, Jack was thriving, and his owner wished she had made the decision sooner!

Jack, a patient from VEI Deerfield, is living his best life, proving that dogs can do amazing with no eyes. The Deerfield team cared for him every step of the way. We’re grateful to have helped make him feel like a puppy again! 🐾❤️

👁️ Happy Heterochromia Day! 👁️

Heterochromia refers to having two different colored eyes, a condition seen in dogs, cats, horses, and some humans. It occurs due to a lack of pigment called Melanin, resulting in one eye appearing blue. The most common type is Heterochromia iridis, or complete Heterochromia.

Meet Angus, the Bernese Mountain Dog with complete Heterochromia, who you might recognize from VEI Upland where he "works" as a hospital greeter! Both of Angus's eyes are visual and normal, just different colors.

One fascinating aspect of different eye colors is how distinct the retinas appear in blue and brown-eyed dogs. These retinal photos of Angus show his blue eye's "red" retina and his brown eye's "yellow" retina. Both are normal, but the brown eye has pigment that the blue eye lacks!

Isn’t ophthalmology amazing?! 🐾💙
