Feathers on the Wind Farm

FotW is a small hobby farm outside of Sanford NC raising myotonic (MGR) goats & English Springer Spaniels.

More information and our puppy application available on our website. We are a small hobby farm between Sanford and Moncure. Currently we are working on updating infrastructure so that we can add (meat) goats, rabbits and chickens this Spring as well as egg laying chickens! We also have hopes of offering lessons of different sorts! We look forward to sharing our journey with all of you!

While we do not currently hunt or field trial/test our dogs, it is something we would like to do in the future.

This is related to the health testing that is suggested for our beloved breed. This is just one aspect of ethical breeding. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to reach out!

Moo has her CHIC number and we will complete Percy's testing this coming summer when he is old enough to get his hips and elbows done.

The English Springer Spaniel is a sweet-faced, lovable bird dog of great energy, stamina, and brains. Sport hunters appreciate the duality of working Springers: handsome, well mannered pets during the week, and trusty hunting, show and performance buddies on weekends.

Are you interested in this breed? The OFA, working with the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association, recommends the following basic health screening tests for all breeding stock:
- Hip Dysplasia (OFA or PennHip)
- Elbow Dysplasia
- ACVO Eye Exam
- Progressive Retinal Atrophy
- DNA Repository
Optional but recommended:
- FUCOSIDOSIS
- PFK
- Degenerative Myelopathy
- Autoimmune Thyroiditis
- Cardiac (Basic, congenital, or advanced via a cardiologist)

Dogs meeting these basic health screening requirements are issued Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) numbers. For potential puppy buyers, CHIC certification is a good indicator the breeder responsibly factors good health into their selection criteria.

This young buck.. it doesn't matter how rough of the day I had at work or how tired I am.. it always makes me smile to walk out and see him waiting for me by the fence when I start chores. He waits patiently for his scratches and never demands them.

I hope he passes his sweet temperament onto his babies.

Belle (left) is a first freshener (her first time having babies). It is not uncommon for them to have one their first time… It would really surprise me if she has a single in there.

Day two of the IABCA 2024 Tarheel Sieger in the books. And holy cannoli, what a weekend it was.

Show 3 - Percy went sporting group one under former breeder judge Stephen Dainard

He went on to win Best in Show 3

Show 4 - he took sporting group one under DiAnn Flory

He went on to clean sweep the weekend with Best in Show for show 4 as well

This organization does what they call the Grand Sieger. Any dog that has won a best in show from puppies to veterans, etc. goes in the ring together. And the icing on the cake for an amazing weekend; He was awarded Grand Sieger as well.

To say that I am proud of this little dog is an understatement. Thank you to all of the judges that picked him out against some lovely dogs. Thank you to all of the stewards and everybody that makes these shows possible.

Percy and I are home from the first day of IABCA & The International Dog Shows 2024 2024 Tarheel Sieger. What a day it has been.

Show 1 - He went sporting group one under Jean Pero

He went on to take Best in show under (breeder) judge Stephen Dainard and a second judge unfortunately I cannot remember her name.

Show 2 - he went sporting group one under Jerry Lee Howse

He went on to take best in show for show two as well under Jerry Lee Howse and Jean Pero.

There were some very nice looking dogs in the lineup, including one that I heard someone comment was "really hard to beat" in the toy group.

Now it is time to rest for tomorrow!

Goatie girls

Bellies are starting to get round.

I've been on a video kick lately. Everyone has a job here at FotW Farm. This includes the dogs. One of those jobs is to help track any deer that we need assistance with locating. Merlin and Moo both got some practice with the hide last year but this was Percy's first exposure. Jeff did a drag before this and the dogs located it easily and he was giving them a bit of positive reinforcement with the hide after to build their excitement over the scent :) I do believe that the littlest doggo is a natural :) Happy hunting yall! A little lunch break with our little boys. Sometimes I think they forget about all the good food in their paddock and stay in their shelter hoping for more feed.

Three myotonic goats come running when they realize it's dinner time.

I was walking the new paddock looking for where to move the Gallagher Smart Fence to rotate the little boys to. The natural brush clearing crew joined to point out what they wanted to eat.

Spoiling our does with a fan. It is temperature controlled to turn on at 90 degrees and off below 90. The girls spend the hot part of the day laying in the barn. I may adjust the temp setting but for now it works as planned. The girls are a little afraid of it currently.
