Summer fun awaits! At Down Maine Veterinary Clinic, we want to ensure our furry friends stay cool and beat the heat.
➡️ Hydration: Always ensure your dog has access to fresh, cool water.
➡️ Exercise: Walk your dog during cooler parts of the day, usually early morning or late evening.
➡️ Paw Care: Hot surfaces can burn paws. Test surfaces with your hand; if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them. 🐾
➡️ Sun Protection: Dogs, especially those with short hair, white fur, and pink skin, can get sunburned. Consult with us about pet-safe sunscreen!
Remember, the warmth of summer can be deceiving. What feels like a comfortable day to us can be dangerously hot for our pets, especially inside a car. On a sunny day, even at just 72°F outside, a car's interior can heat up to 90°F within 20 minutes, putting pets at risk of heatstroke. Symptoms to watch for include heavy panting, lethargy, excessive drooling, and dark-colored gums.
If you ever suspect your dog is suffering from heat-related distress, contact us immediately at (207) 324-4683. Stay cool and have a paw-some summer!
