Reactivity/Barrier Frustration, whatever term you want to call it when your dog is out of control while on the leash, is a result of the dog being in either DEFENSE, PREY, or SOCIAL DRIVE.

This is such a common behavior issue that we are currently seeing a lot of.

If you have these problems, ask yourself these questions:

1. Do I allow my dog to run amuck with other dogs at a daycare or dog park?
2. Do I allow my dog to great every person, dog, or thing while out and about.
3. Have I properly taught my dog that things in our human world are nothing to be fearful of, do I avoid situations that stress the dog, so they never learn to be confident?
4. What is my dog's genetic predisposition?

We get a lot of calls about puppies that are not behaving in the home, such as using the bathroom in the house, being destructive, etc. But the question really is... How did you teach the dog how to live in your home?

Most people assume the dog will eventually behave, maybe, maybe not.

When you bring an opportunistic predator into your home, it is your job to parent them, teach them rules and boundaries, teach them how to live in a human world, and most importantly, try to better understand them for who they are!

If you don't put in the work when they first arrive at your home, you will then be putting in a lot more work when they are older when those unwanted behaviors have a lot of repetitions and success behind them.

Due to a previously scheduled appointment, group training will be cancelled tomorrow morning 25 January.

Doing some "Step off" drills with Izzy. I do not use the word "STAY" in training as you see in the video.

The dog must maintain the last command given until either released or given a new command.

Stepping off to the dogs 90° is the cue to remain in position. If I was to move forward the dog will move with me in the "heal" position.

The "heal" command is a position, not the act of walking, think of it as a moving "stay".

Well, since they are calling for rain in the morning, we are again cancelling the group training for tomorrow morning. We will try this again next Saturday.

Finally get to work these two scaredy cats together today. 💪🤟They both did great.

Here is a short video of Izzy. You can tell she is nervous, way better than our first trip to Lowes. You will see that i am giving her some treats, this is not for training anything specific, it is to determine her state of mind. Today was the first time she took the treat.

There are two main reasons a dog will not take a treat.

1. The dog is scared and survival, fight or flight, is priority over eating.

2. The dog is interested in something more valuable away from them, i.e. squirrel, dog, people, etc....once the value disappears, then they will take the treat.

Welcome 9 m/o, Izzy, to our Resident Program. She has been with us now for about 5 days. We are working on her confidence in this chaotic human world, showing her that things are not as scary as she thinks. So far, we got her to stop barking at strangers and walking nicely on leash. She has a long way to go, but each day, she gains the knowledge to get her closer to our goals of being neutral and balanced in all different environments.

Are you a "Leader" or "Avoider"?

Are you helping your dog to overcome, or are you preventing them from learning?

Do your emotions come before the dog's "NEEDS"?

Is your relationship upside down?

These are questions you need to ask yourself if your dog is reactive, scared, timid, aggressive, etc.
