You cannot fix a bad behaviour with exercise, or with longer walks. You will simply end up with a fit (or momentarily tired) dog that still has unwanted behaviours.

You cannot address an unwanted behaviour by training a good/incompatible behaviour, because you will then have a dog that offers the different behaviour instead of the unwanted behaviour *only when* (and if) the reward (competing motivator) you are offering is greater than the reward gained by indulging in that behaviour.

You cannot address an unwanted/a bad behaviour with medication or surgery (e.g. the removal of sexual organs). You can only address a medical issue with medication or surgery.

Address unwanted/dangerous behaviours fairly, clearly, and unemotionally in the way the dog understands, without equivocation - and then teach them the desired behaviours.

Learn the fine art of discernment: knowing when you can help the dog, and when you cannot. It will keep you honest.

Learn the fine art of detachment: knowing that not being able to help them is sometimes a blessing. It will keep you sane.

Most of all, start teaching your pup how to live in the human world from the moment you bring him/her into your home, thereby preventing unwanted behaviours from starting in the first place. The choices you make with your dog don't just affect you and your dog. They affect everyone you and your dog come into contact with.

Most think socialization your puppy is letting them run amok with other dogs. This is far from the truth. True socialization is creating calmness when others are around.

Doing nothing is a lot of doing something when it comes to training. Instead of letting your dog's go crazy, practice this exercise, especially if they have a problem relaxing.

Most people who bring new puppies into the home, miss the opportunity to teach them about rules and boundaries.

8 weeks to about 5 months old, is a very crucial age where they are learning everything about who you are and what they can get by with in the home.

Over the past several years, we are seeing more and more behavior problems from about 6 months up to 2 years old. These behaviors can be avoided if you parent your dog first, (more "NO's" than "YESES"), rather than spoiling them or letting them have too much freedom without establishing rules and boundaries first.

Now, not all dogs will develop severe behavioral issues if you do nothing, however with my puppy clients, we don't even take a chance of going down that road.

Start your puppy off right, so that you can enjoy the rest of their life without having to go back and fix things they have unintentionally learned.

When establishing rules, boundaries, and expectations for your dog, it is important for everyone in the household to follow them, or you will continue to have problems.

Starting your puppy off on the right foot will help in preventing unwanted behaviors.

Fear, insecurity, lack of confidence, aggression, and many other behavior problems can simply be avoided by parenting/teaching the dog the moment you bring them into your home.

06/14/2024

We are seeing a high volume of fearful dogs, ranging from complete shutdown all the way to forward fear aggression, (flight, fight or freeze).

Avoiding, coddling, soothing, or creating safe spaces does not help them at all. Dogs learn only through experience.

If you avoid stressful situations because you let your feelings or emotions get in the way, you are only doing the dog injustice.

Be your dog's leader not a security blanket!!

As dog trainers, the number one priority should be educating the humans so that they understand them for what they truly are, not a human baby or child, but an animal worth respecting. Unfortunately, not all dog trainers do this as you will see in this video.

I have been told I needed more content to keep our social media alive.

As most know, I do not do board and trains unless it is a good reason to remove the dog from the home due to a behavioral problem, case by case basis.

I am not a internet trainer or wish to be one with how to videos. If you want to learn, you need to work with me. However, I will start posting video clips of evaluations and private lessons so those out there have an idea of what to expect from us.

Here is a clip from an evaluation of another client who previously worked with a trainer that was afraid of this dog, and never could solve the behavior problem.

This is 10 month old Dude, a Bernedoodle. He will be with us for a few weeks in training. He arrived yesterday morning, and we quickly put him to work.🙂

The last picture is of him at 10 weeks old when his owner was here learning how to raise a well-behaved puppy. They laid a great foundation over the last few months, working on environmentals, proper socialization, neutrality, balance, house training, and setting up rules and boundaries. You notice obedience wasn't a priority for puppy training.

If you are ever looking for a trainer to help you with your young puppy, and the first thing they do is teach it to sit or play with other dogs all the time.....🏃‍♂️ 🏃‍♂️ away!!!

When you first get a puppy, you should be learning what a dog is, how it thinks, how it learns, and the most important thing, how to properly communicate with them.

Training is not just a few minutes here and there working on obedience or taking them for a walk. What is your dog learning in between those times when it is free to do whatever it wants??

That there, my friend, is where bad, unwanted behaviors are learned!!🙂
