Holiday season brings a lot of new and festive décor to the home. Here are some items to look out for to keep your furry friends safe:

-Tinsel: Like any string, if tinsel is digested by your pet, it can be very dangerous and cause an obstruction that can require surgery.

-Chocolate: Bakers’ chocolate, dark chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate tend to be the most dangerous types of chocolate for pets. Chocolate contains ingredients which can cause central nervous system dysfunction and heart issues. Though some chocolates contain less of these ingredients than others, all chocolate is considered toxic and should be kept away from our pets. If you think your pet has ingested chocolate, do not wait and call us immediately!

-Imitation Snow: If you have flocking or imitation snow on your tree, make sure it is out of reach for your pet as it can be harmful if digested.

-Tree preservatives: If you are using tree preservatives, ensure that your pet doesn’t have access to the tree water as this could be very toxic to them!

4 Benefits of Adopting a Senior Pet!

If you have a senior pet, you know their love is like no other. Each year millions of senior pets are surrendered to shelters across the country and their whole world changes.

Here are some great reasons to consider welcoming a senior pet into your family:

-Often already trained – In many cases, senior pets have spent their former years in a home and can respond to basic commands and are more likely to be house-trained.
-Ready for love – Being surrendered is a traumatic experience for all pets, giving them an unrelenting appreciation for the person who saves them and shows them love.
-Behaviorally developed – With older animals, most have outgrown difficult behavioral stages and are well adjusted, making them fit right in at home.
-Save a life! Senior pets are at higher risk for euthanasia than younger pets and by adopting an older pet, you could be saving a life.

Halloween time is here! Are you prepared for the holiday hazards and keeping your pet safe? Here are some Halloween pet safety tips:

Candy - always keep candy out of your pet's reach as more than just chocolate can be toxic to your pet if ingested

Candles - candles are especially fitting décor for Halloween, but they also make our pets very curious. Always take extra caution and never leave pets unattended around or near open flames

Costumes – people in costumes can be intimidating to our pets as it makes it more difficult for them to read our body language. If you notice your pet getting uncomfortable or fearful, remove them from the situation and give them a break

We hope these tips are helpful in ensuring a safe, and very happy Halloween for you and your pets!

: Did you know that your house cat shares over 95% of the same DNA as Tigers? That’s right, your feline friend descends from a long line of hunters. Their strong DNA makeup is the reason most cats have innate hunting skills you may see with your outdoor cats, or around the house with your indoor tiny tigers.

A question we hear a lot is, what is Leptospirosis? Lepto is a term you may hear around our clinic and is a disease carried by wildlife such as squirrels, deer or possums. The bacteria that causes leptospirosis are spread through the urine of infected animals and can survive in water or soil for weeks to months. People and animals can get infected through contact with contaminated urine, water or soil. As many pets frequent the outdoors, they can encounter this disease.

If you think your pet might be at risk for contracting Lepto, or you’d like to learn more, please give us a call. Common symptoms can include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, severe weakness, depression, extreme muscle pain and more.

Have questions about Leptospirosis? Just ask!
