It’s not “too broke,” just a different kind of broke.

Basic horsemanship is universal and I think we can all agree that horses learn well through pressure and release. But I think it’s important to take into consideration the task at hand and train according to what your discipline requires of your horse. It has nothing to do with them being too broke or not broken enough, but everything to do with them being broke in the way that meets the needs of your discipline.

I don’t think a horse can be too broke, but they can be too drawn to your feet or too backed off to win at our event. Some horses need a little of that and others not as much. We need them to move out freely without being drawn down too much. Obviously, we need them to rate and gather when we ask, but we need plenty of forward motion and reach.

They all need collection, softness, fitness, good nutrition and consistency. I find it important in our event that they can carry themselves without me having to place every foot all the time but also that they will let me when I need to place them.

They need to have a level of confidence that allows them to take over, but also to come back to me when I need them to. That’s probably one of the hardest things to achieve but so important in an event where we need them to basically runoff and then gather back up four times in approximately 15 seconds.

Last but certainly not least, they need to trust their rider. I work every day at getting my horses to accept my hands and feet willingly and trust that they will get a release when they get soft. Horses that trust you are so much less likely to brace against you or get worried when the pressure is on.

There are a lot of ways to win but to consistently win on multiple horses, you have to train a broke horse. Not to be your slave, but to be your partner!

Skipping steps and rushing the process can be very detrimental to our horses. It’s not a race to see who can get one trained the fastest.

Train for the horse not for the video.

Be present through the process, realizing where your horse is at so that you can be realistic with your expectations.

This doesn’t mean every day should be simple. Progress is made through challenges. We should be challenging ourselves and our horses past our comfort zone at times. We need to work through the challenge and hold our horses accountable before we move onto something else.

Learn to love the whole process, not just the win!

Be patient.
Be present.
Be persistent.

In the performance horse world we talk about “mental toughness” in a competition setting… I think we should shift the conversation to “mental surrender.”

People brag about competitors having “ice water in their veins”…how would your mindset change if you embraced the fact you’ve got the Holy Spirit in your veins? THE spirit of almighty God living on the inside of you working through you.

The need for control is what stirs up anxiety- let it go…invite His presence in that space.

The best sports psychology advice ever written can be found in the book of Philippians:

Philippians 4:6-8
Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice or fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind and self-control].

A “sound mind” is focused on what God says about your circumstances. A sound mind produces sound emotions, a sound mind produces sound decision making.

To me having a good competitive mindset comes from intentionally realizing the presence of God. The sanctuary that I can take with me whether I go.
Nerves create tension and resistance.
Tension and resistance create mistakes and bobbles.

Being at peace and focused creats fluidity and smoothness. Smooth is fast.

If you can’t do it fast… SLOW DOWN.

This goes for all aspects of life.

Is your horse struggling to counter arc… slow it down, ask for two steps instead of ten. Build a solid foundation.

Can’t make the perfect turn? Place their feet slow, walking and trotting, be perfect slow.

Struggling to reach those big goals? Slow it down. Crush small goals. Take smaller steps but NEVER STOP MOVING.

1% better everyday is 100% better in 100 days.

One of the things I love about training horses is helping someone else’s dreams come true. We give our soul to some of these horses. We spend years training them. When they go on to be successful with their new riders it is exciting. Knowing you helped build that winner and then watching them be successful after they leave your hands is very special.

🌸Flower🌸

This sweet 18!!! Year old girlie came to me to start fully, never had been ridden and has a little over 45 days on her. I’m so proud of her! 💕She’s been so much fun to train and has done great on the field trips she’s been on so far. Stockyards next week!💃🏼
