OWNING COWS VS HORSES! 🐮🐴
Starting to question whether I’ve been under the influence of hallucinogens most of my life!

SOME EARLY OBSERVATIONS OF THE DIFFERENCES
🐎 Put one mare out with one stallion, all hell breaks loose. Mare threatens to come through the fence or over the gate, all at 400 kph. My heart rate peaks at 1257 bpm & I have no fingernails left. After what feels like an eternity, they calm down. Mare lame. Several thousand dollar vet bill pending.
🐄 Put one bull out with 18 cows. Complete non event. Absolutely nothing to report.

🐎 Remove one horse from ‘friend’ that it has always hated. Absolute pandemonium ensues. Life flashes before my eyes and I remember I must renew the life insurance if I survive this.
🐄 Remove one cow from entire herd. Comes quietly for handful of corn.
🤔

🐎 Horses breakout of field. Horses have complete meltdown at lack of boundaries. No amount of ‘whoaing’ or bucket shaking will calm them. After many laps through the farm, they forget why they are running. Two are lame, one tying up, one suspected soft tissue injury & one half hearted attempt at a colic. Further vet bill pending.
🐄 Cattle break out of field. Ringleader is wearing the farm gate-number-tag as a necklace. All cows congregate approximately 20 yards from pasture at nearest grass verge. Remove necklace from ringleader, not a mark to be seen. Wave magic blue wand, all cows pleasantly return to field.

🐎 Horse comes in from field with 1cm scratch that has barely removed hair. Immediately clean, apply wrap, check available balance on credit card. Next morning horse can only stand on 3 legs. Call vet & priest. After all, horse will require many millions in vets bills and divine intervention to recover from its scratch.
🐄 Comes in missing a leg with rusted barbed wire embedded in the wound. Call vet who says there’s no need for him to come out & will put out antibiotics for you to collect. Return to administer antibiotics to find cow has miraculously regrown leg & shows no sign of injury or lameness.

Stash antibiotics in medicine cupboard with the rest of the hoard.

Barney

Maturing to 14.2-14.3h

Barney is a young orphan who came to us in May. He has THRIVED since moving in with us. The vet gives him two thumbs up!! He’s eating grain, hay and gets formula on his grain twice a day.

Barney is extremely friendly, but not pushy like a typical orphan. He is good for the farrier, great at halter breaking and good around kids. He comes when he’s called. He comes with a 5 gallon bucket of formula.

Carlos is a steady-eddy trail type. He is never in a hurry to get anywhere. He has had absolutely no spook, buck, bite or anything silly with us. He was previously owned by an older, inexperienced rider.

Carlos is perfect for trailering. He will hop right in, no questions asked. Ponies behind others great. He stands like a champ for the farrier. He would be ideal for a kid who wants to follow mom down the trail or go check cows.
He’d be perfect as a first horse for a family.

Thinking about doing a monthly ladies night!
The next one being August 17th 7pm-9pm. BYOB (21+). Grooming horses, hanging out and getting in the pool if you like! It’s a free event but donations towards the rescue are always welcome and appreciated!

We are going to offer homeschool classes starting September 9th @11:15. This is a weekly class for ages 8-17.

Students will learn anatomy, health (first aid, nutrition, vitals, etc), horsemanship (groundwork, saddling up, riding), and more!!

The class is paid for monthly:
$75 for one student!
Discounts available for multiple siblings!

10 years ago today, I packed up my life and moved from Montana to Texas for a job. I knew no one. I had no idea if I would enjoy it or where it would take me in life. That was the scariest decision, yet best leap of faith I have ever made.
