Here are some good reasons why you should always use a harness to walk your dog, and not a collar. Especially if you have a dog that might suddenly lunge at say, a squirrel, cat or bird while on leash.

Dogs' necks are delicate and there are some vital structures in the neck which can also get damaged if the dog is regularly yanked on a collar, or a prong or choke collar is used.

No matter what anyone tells you, a prong or choke collar only works because it causes pain, and if it's causing pain, it's damaging the neck. There is NO proper way to use a prong or choke collar. These tools are used to stop dogs pulling or lunging, when in fact the solution is to teach your dog not to pull or lunge, and then you don't need the prong or choke collar. Teaching your dog to walk nicely on leash is not hard. All it requires is communication between you and the dog and using the right method to teach the dog what you want of him/her. The only tool you need is a good harness. A good harness to use is the Ruffwear harness, or a harness similar to it.
Use science folks! Not force.

Leash pulling!

Leash pulling can be very difficult to handle when not done by a trainer. This is because there are SOOO many things that we trainers do during a walk rather than just walking the dog and texting.

We do:
Desensitization
Trigger control
Positive reinforcement
Counter conditioning to triggers
All while making sure the dog doesn’t pull. It’s a tough job. It’s requires 100% attention on your dog and the environment.

But you can work on your dogs pulling by not reinforcing the pulling.
Any behavior that gets reinforced will continue to happen.
Side note: Retractable leashes are terrible. They reinforce pulling.
What’s really important is taking treats with you and treating the dog when they are next you. I recommend practicing inside first as well as using a clicker.
Click when the dog is in heel position. Take one step forward. Click and treat for your dog following you. If they don’t follow you can use a treat to their nose to help lure them.
Repeat this step until you can take 2 steps before you click and treat. And so on. Practicing this inside without taking your dog for a walk is hard and sometimes impossible for people who have large energetic breeds.

I won’t go into too much detail now. If you’d like I can post a video on more information.

Just pay attention to the bottom of the picture.

Monitoring your dogs stress levels are very important. Much like our own, once dogs become more stressed we tend to see behaviors that we don’t like for example:
Jumping
Barking at strangers or dogs
Lunging
Going after cars
Pulling harder on leash

This is because there is a threshold where your dog is comfortable and can tolerate triggers.
(A trigger is something that causes a behavior in your dog.. people, dogs, birds, cars..etc)

Once your dog has exceeded their threshold your dog will have a behavior. It’s important to keep your dog below their own threshold. Each dog will be able to tolerate different things.

How to keep them below threshold:
Summary
You can keep your distance from other dogs and people and other triggers. Adding distance between your dog and its triggers will help reduce unwanted behaviors. This is because you are keeping them at a stress level they can tolerate.
A great example is a dog who barks at other dogs on walks. Find the distance at which your dog sees another dog but does not react to them. This is your safe zone. Stay in this zone. Once you get closer to the dog you may see your dogs stress levels increasing. This would be the time to stop and walk another direction or turn down a side road to avoid an unwanted behavior.

Stress in dogs can be hard to tell. However it’s very important to notice early stress signals in your dog. This is because you dog is showing you they are becoming uncomfortable in a situation. If you notice early stress signals in your dogs you can prevent future behaviors from happening by removing them from the situation before it escalated into something else like fearfulness or aggression.

Early signed of stress are called displacement behaviors. These are normal dog behaviors done out of context, which makes them weird for the dog to be doing them.
Examples include
Lip licking without food present
Yawning not after a nap
Stretching not after a nap
Shaking off as if wet, but not wet
Suddenly sniffing something as if it were not previously there.
Suddenly scratching.
Etc

These can be hard to determine if it is appropriate for the dog to be doing or if they are early stress signals. Always refer to a dog Traning such as myself if you are unsure.

There’s a big debate in the dog training world about the use of punishment. There are many scientific and credible articles such as the ASVAB statement on punishment. (Link below)

Basically, what punishment does is it addresses the outward problem that we see but not the root cause of it. What this can do is make it seem like your dog is trained by surpassing the dogs emotions and reasoning for said behavior. The reason why this can be problematic is because:
1. In basic psychology of human and animals: when you suppress a behavior it eventually finds a way to come back out ten fold.
2. You can create a dog with learned hopelessness and no emotions. Similar to that of the homeless.
3. It doesn’t address the root problem so the behavior doesn’t actually go away.
4. It works sometimes if the tool is being used, so you have to rely on the tool for the rest of that dogs life.
5. It doesn’t TEACH the dog anything. What it does is make the dog avoid the discomfort and pain.
6. There are many risks such as redirected aggression, aggressive behavior increase, and fear behavior increase.
7. It can make the dog associate the pain and discomfort with its outside world.

I have seen dogs take a correction and associate it with another dog. Simply put the dog will and can learn that the presence of another dog causes pain. Once this happens you see elevated aggression towards other dogs.

The reason why punishment training shouldn’t be used it’s because there are more risks and downfalls that can occur from using it correctly and incorrectly. And in most cases for most people we like to do the things that have fewer risks and outcomes that we know are predicable. With punishment training it can be very unpredictable.

You would handle each type of barking in a different way. Barking is never the problem. It’s a symptom of a problem. So you need to find out the root cause of the barking and fix that. Barking is usually an emotional response the dog is having towards something in the environment.
