January is National Walk Your Pet Month. What a great opportunity to work on a New Year's resolution to walk your dog everyday! Are you boarding your dog to visit family this holiday season? Or will your four-legged friend get to celebrate with you and play with your close ones' pets? In either case, keep an eye out for Kennel Cough. It is a very common disease in younger and middle-aged dogs. Since it is highly infectious, dogs acquire the disease by interacting with other infected dogs.

Kennel Cough is suspected in an otherwise healthy dog that is only coughing after recently interacting with another dog that was coughing. A virus is most commonly responsible for his or her Kennel Cough. However, if after a 10-day waiting period, the dog has not improved, come see us as it might be a bacterial infection.

While many people are decking their halls and homes this holiday season, we wanted to share a friendly reminder that holiday decorations might look beautiful but they may be hazardous for pets.

Here are a few tips to keep your pet safe:

πŸŽ„ Securely anchor and keep pets away from the tree. Also remember to sweep up any fallen brush or pine needles.

πŸŽ„ Hang strands of lights higher up. Not only can pets get tangled in strings, but these strands can give them a potentially life-threatening electrical shock if they bite through the wire.

πŸŽ„ Tinsel and ornaments can seem like toys (especially to cats) and can cause serious stomach issues if ingested. Avoid using tinsel when possible and stick with larger, shatterproof ornaments that aren’t easy to break or swallow.

Thanksgiving is almost here! While we’re excited about the delicious feast ahead, keep in mind that some foods are toxic for pets.

Keep your cats and dogs away from:
πŸ¦ƒ Stuffing – it may contain onions or garlic
πŸ¦ƒ Ham and other pork – can cause pancreatitis, upset stomach, or diarrhea
πŸ¦ƒ Turkey – dogs should only have a little bit of meat, no skin or seasoning
πŸ¦ƒ Turkey Bones – splinters may cause indigestion or bowel obstruction
πŸ¦ƒ Mashed Potatoes – may have been prepared with butter and dairy
πŸ¦ƒ Salads with Grapes/Raisins – can cause kidney failure
πŸ¦ƒ Chocolate Desserts – toxic to both cats and dogs

If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic this holiday call us at (805) 729-4460. We'll be open all day on Thanksgiving.

Cats are remarkable acrobats who can sometimes accidentally get into potentially hazardous situations. πŸ™€ One instance could be their collars catching on protruding objects, trapping or injuring them. Cats may also try to escape their collar and catch their leg or their lower jaw in the collar, making it hard for them to move. If anything like this happens to a cat without anyone around, it can be extremely dangerous for them.

Breakaway collars are a great solution that can help keep your cat safe. 😸 Some people think collars are not necessary for cats that don't go outside or that they won't tolerate them. But cats can get out accidentally so for their safety, inside or outside, we recommend getting them used to wearing one. Breakaway collars save cat lives!

Meet Zeke and Dakota! 🐾

Zeke had a mast cell tumor on his muzzle, which was surgically removed at AVS in April 2024. He then underwent multiple doses of CCNU, a chemotherapy drug, and just finished the full protocol. We're happy to report that he seems to be cancer free! πŸŽ‰

As for Dakota, she was diagnosed with Lymphoma, and recently graduated and completed her chemotherapy! πŸ™Œ

Congratulations to both!

Our hearts go out to everyone affected by the wildfires in Ventura County. Please stay safe and prioritize your family, including your furry friends.

Smoke from these wildfires can travel thousands of miles. If you are in an area where the air quality is affected, keep your pets indoor as much as possible. You can check the "Fire and Smoke Map" on the following website to find out the Air Quality Index in your area: https://www.airnow.gov/fires/.

And keep an eye out for any of the following smoke inhalation symptoms, as they could have lasting effects on your pets.

β€’ Eye irritation
β€’ Respiratory issues or trouble breathing
β€’ Fatigue
β€’ Lethargy or reduced appetite/thirst

If you notice any of these signs, contact us immediately. We’re here to help, 24/7!

Lymphoma is one of the most common forms of canine cancer and affects the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, and bone marrow.

The first symptom that dogs with lymphoma usually show is swollen lymph nodes. Dogs with lymphoma may also develop lethargy, fever, anorexia, weakness, and dehydration as the disease progresses. Awareness of symptoms can help catch this serious disease earlier which often leads to a better prognosis.

Always notify your primary care veterinarian if your pet exhibits unusual symptoms. If your veterinarian suspects that your pet may have cancer, they may refer you to our board-certified oncologist, Dr. Budreckis.
