This meme is funny, but it leads to a pretty serious question. How do you talk to your kids about the death of their fish (pet)? We have had our fair share of little humans coming in the day of, or a few days after, losing their fish, and let me be the first to tell you they are tough customers to make happy after an event like that. Many times, we have adults come in with very specific wants: “I need a red betta with a single blue stripe on its tail and a white eye,” and we can pretty much tell from that point what happened. It can be incredibly hard to explain the loss of an animal to a kid, but it’s also a great chance to teach a serious lesson. Here are some pointers when the inevitable happens:
-bring us a water sample. A water test is like a blood test for an aquarium. We can find anomalies in the parameters that are easily fixed most of the time. The best part of a water test is that we do them for free, and it gives you peace of mind before the next purchase.
-call us beforehand to make sure we have the fish if it’s very specific. Nothing breaks a kid (or any human) down more than seeing 3000+ fish and not finding “gills” twin.
-take some time to look around at fish on the internet with your kid. You would be amazed at how fast a kid is willing to try a new type of fish once they set eyes on something they never knew existed.

We are always here to help you with any questions you may have. Although this isn’t the best part of owning an aquarium, it’s a part of the hobby. We are here to help you on those tough days.

Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata 'Meta' is a rare, red aquatic plant with narrow leaves that grows well in aquariums. It's a variant of the Ludwigia inclinata var. verticillata plant, which is native to central Colombia.

We have these trimmed and colored up and ready to go home with you!

For those unfamiliar, we maintain a 10-gallon tank in front of the shop, serving as a nursery for western chorus frogs. Occasionally, their sounds may be audible when arriving at the shop in the evening. Due to the recent cold spell, the frogs have been found on the lawn, parking lot, and walkway. Please exercise caution when visiting the shop in the afternoon, as you may encounter one attempting to warm up.

Good morning! How long have you been thinking about scaping? So I was going through some old family pictures and came across a bunch of pictures like this. These were taken around 1986/1987 somewhere in the Sierra Nevadas, I imagine off Highway 4 or Highway 108. My aunt bought me a 35mm camera for Christmas the year before, and I was taking pictures everywhere I went. Since I was under ten at the time, my parents paid to have the film developed. We lived in a world where you didn't know how good your pictures were until you received them back from a store or drive-up photo mat. When I would get my pictures developed, they would always be of water - rivers, lakes, banks, etc. It would make my dad so mad that he paid to have these pictures developed. Little did he know, I was studying the underwater worlds in the fascination of a child's mind. I am so thankful for my folks taking me to places like this throughout my childhood, as it laid the groundwork for my future career.
