10% off Routine Blood Work during the month of October.

Routine blood work is recommended as part of your pet’s annual wellness exams, much like our doctors perform blood tests during our routine physicals.

Routine blood work, along with a thorough physical exam, give the veterinarian the most information about your pet’s health so that the best treatment and prevention recommendations can be made. This can allow early detection of some common conditions that may not be detected while performing the physical exam alone. In addition, regular blood work is recommended every 12 months for senior pets, or sooner depending on certain health conditions or medications being taken.

11/24/2023

We have been receiving many calls and emails from concerned clints regarding the “mysterious sickness” in dogs the news has been reporting about. Here is what we know:

According to Los Angeles Veterinary Public Health Program, they have received multiple reports of dogs experiencing an acute onset respiratory disease of unknown etiology (origin).

So far, there are no reports of similar illness in other animal species or in humans.
Canine Infectious Respiratory Diseases (aCIRD) Cases of Atypical Canine Infectious Respiratory Diseases (aCIRD) is currently defined as the canine respiratory PCR test panel on the dog being negative, PLUS the dog having one of the following clinical scenarios:
• Chronic mild-moderate tracheobronchitis with a prolonged duration (6-8 weeks or longer) that is minimally or not responsive to antibiotics
• Chronic pneumonia that is minimally or not responsive to antibiotics
• Acute pneumonia that rapidly becomes severe and often leads to poor outcomes in as little as 24-36 hours.

Given the lack of information about the cause of aCIRD, veterinarians and dog owners are advised to:
1. Isolate sick dogs at home for 28 days part the first onset of illness, minimum, and isolate them when hospitalized
2. Quarantine exposed dogs at home for 14 days to monitor them for clinical signs
3. Utilize a disinfectant that is effective against non-enveloped viruses and other harder-to-kill pathogens, such as freshly formulated bleach or accelerated hydrogen peroxide products. Assure surfaces are clean before use. Always read disinfectant labels and follow instructions closely. Disinfect fomites such as doorknobs, keyboards, and animal equipment thoroughly and frequently.
4. Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when handling cases. Although this disease in dogs has not yet been reported to be zoonotic, it is prudent to wear a respirator mask, eye protection, gloves and clothing coverage (such as a gown) when handling these dogs.
5. Maximize ventilation
6. Remind dog owners to keep their dog home, away from day care, boarding kennels, grooming facilities, and dogs parks, if their dog is ill for any reason.

Sweetwater Veterinary Clinic advises if your pet is coughing, sneezing or has eye or nasal discharge, please call to make an appointment to have your pet evaluated. You will be instructed to isolate your pet from other dogs in your home. Upon arrival to your appointment, please remain in your vehicle. DO NOT bring your pet into the clinic. Please call us to inform us of your arrival. A Technician or Doctor will come to your car at their earliest convenience to assess your pet. Please do not take your pet out of your car unless directed to do so from a staff member.

We also recommend that all pets are current on vaccinations such Da2PP (Distemper, Adeno 2, Parvo, Parainfluenza) Bordetella (kennel cough) and Canine Influenza.
Rabies is required for ALL pets to be seen unless current health condition prevents it and is approved by the Veterinarian.

Our Story

The spacious Sweetwater Veterinary Clinic Hospital includes complete diagnostic and treatment facilities for small animals. The hospital has four examination rooms, a treatment room with recovery kennels, a surgery room and indoor dog kennels. We also have covered kennels and dog run outside for those animals that enjoy more natural confines. There is also an isolation ward available for those animals which require quarantine. The hospital's treatment and surgery rooms feature gas anesthesia, EKG and heart-rate monitors. For the care of both small and large animals, the Sweetwater Veterinary Clinic hospital has a microbiology and chemistry lab equipped for the performance of many routine tests and procedures. The hospital also features a well-stocked veterinary pharmacy for the convenience of the Clinic staff and clients. The Sweetwater Veterinary Clinic hospital is supported by two mobile veterinary units which are in radio and telephone contact with the hospital and with each other. These veterinary trucks carry a broad range of equipment and supplies that enable the Clinic staff to provide many diagnostic and treatment services on location including x-ray, ultrasound a**lysis, and specialty farrier services. They also feature heat and refrigeration to prevent freezing of medications during the winter and provide safe transport for medicines, vaccines, and tissue and serum samples which require refrigeration.
