In loving memory of Gus.

Gus was a beloved member of our team for nearly 20 years. Prior to a well deserved retirement Gus was truly the backbone of our program for many years. Due to his strong and stout build he was the perfect choice for wide range of kids. Nothing phased Gus when he was working, often making him the only horse that could handle riders with severe behavioral issues. He was a one of a kind horse and he is already so missed here at the ranch.

In Memory of our dear friend, Bob Horrell ~ April 9, 1944 – December 12, 2024

This week would have been Bob Horrell’s 81st birthday, and we want to honor Bob and share a bit about how special he was to all of us at Carousel Ranch.

We have so many memories…usually involving Bob and his tractor, volunteering to groom our arena - whether for Heart of the West or just when it needed to be worked, keeping it safe for both our riders and horses. Along with his magic on the tractor, Bob was a wealth of knowledge - generous with his time, wisdom and kindness. We enjoyed his visits to the Ranch and especially loved it when Paws (his therapy dog) came with him to visit with our students and families.

Bob served two tours in Vietnam and after leaving the Navy in October 1968, he faced the challenging transition to civilian life, carrying the invisible scars of war. It was during this time that he discovered the therapeutic power of working with animals, a realization that profoundly shaped his life and led to his dedication to helping others through the same path…including volunteering with Pets for Vets which led to his incredible work at Military Animal Project.

At Carousel Ranch, we were honored to have him not only as a volunteer, but also as a friend and mentor. In 2023, Bob took time out of his schedule to come to the Ranch to coach and share his expertise with a young woman who was training with us to start an equestrian therapy program for Veterans in Ukraine. During this time, Bob made time to come and spend time with Nastya – helping her with ideas and methods to integrate into her program. Nearly two years later, her organization -Victory Center, is successfully operating, serving over 200 veterans, children and families affected by the war in Ukraine.

Happy Birthday Bob! Your legacy lives on not only through the work at Military Animal Project, but the many veterans and organizations (like ours) that he impacted through the years.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the passing of our dear friend and Advisory Board Member, Allen Hohnroth. Allen and his wife, Renee Berlin, began their journey with Carousel Ranch during a tour in 2017. From that moment, an instant connection was formed, and they became lifelong supporters and friends—“all in” from the start.

Renee soon joined the Board, and Allen, as an advisory board member, became a regular presence at meetings. Their unwavering commitment to our mission and their passion for raising funds to support the Ranch’s success has been a true blessing. We are deeply grateful for all that they have done for us over the years.

Allen, in particular, took great pride in contributing to the improvement of our facilities. His dedication went beyond financial support—he generously volunteered his time, assisting with tractor work and various projects around the Ranch. Together, Allen and Renee were always willing to lend a hand, whether it was helping with mailings, procuring auction items, or offering support in any way they could. Their tireless efforts and hands-on involvement have made an immeasurable difference.

Their generosity has been instrumental in numerous upgrades and improvements, including new stalls and shelters for our therapy horses, signage, fencing and gates and most recently, a beautiful new tack room. Allen and Renee also sponsored several of our horses, including Earl, Chocolate, Mattie, and Mijo. Allen’s deep care for the Ranch and his active involvement in its growth have left a lasting legacy—one that will continue to inspire and guide us moving forward.

Our thoughts are with Renee during this incredibly difficult time. Allen was not only a beloved husband to Renee, but also a cherished friend to all of us at the Ranch. His memory will forever be a part of the Carousel Ranch family, and we will always be grateful for the positive changes he and Renee helped bring to this place that meant so much to him.

Thankful Thursday...Today we share a huge THANK YOU to the S. Mark Taper Foundation for their generous grant of $75,000 in support of our Ready to Work vocational training program for young adults with special needs. Their generosity will enable the RTW program’s continued growth and will be essential in enabling us to serve and support more young adults as they take the steps toward achieving employment and success in the workplace.
