Meet Figgy Pudding! This sensitive sweetheart of a chihuahua mix came into the Shelter as a stray along with some “friends”. A good Samaritan found him at the Watsonville Levee and coherced him to safety with some stinky hot-dogs. At the Shelter, Figgy was shy, avoidant and really overwhelmed but always made good choices (moving away and watching the world go by from a distance). Two dedicated foster parents opened up their home and have been observing his behavior for a little over three weeks. He has come a long way but will probably be more of the “wallflower” type of companion than a “social butterfly”.A key to Figgy’s growth in foster has been having a canine in the home. He tends to follow his resident canine foster pups around – looking to see how they interact with the world and people around them. Because of this, he is required to go to a home with a pup. After about a week and a half, Figgy started to enjoy being pet by two individuals in his current foster home that have become part of his circle. He is learning new people are no so scary by having people offer him little treats when they come by. Figgy has even started to dog – enjoying his toy, ripping them up and even playing with a ball with his foster parents. In new environments and with new people, Figgy has been been skittish and ultimately tends to retreat to safety (a crate and/or a familiar environment). With time, patience and the right guardian – we anticipate that FP’s world will become a little less scary and he will be someone’s BFF. Thank you to the volunteers, staff, adopters and everyone in Santa Cruz County for making 2024 a fantastic year. Wishing you all a safe and joyous holiday season, and a wonderful 2025!
The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is an open-door Shelter so we take in all animals regardless of their medical needs. Can you help animals like Popcorn today? Here is his success story:
Popcorn was a sweet little kitten in a stray litter that got stepped on by a horse on the property where he lived. His radius and ulna were crushed and exposed. The property owners went to a vet Emergency Room for diagnostics but could not afford treatment. So the ER doc contacted the Shelter to see if we would take it as a surrender and amputate, since it was otherwise well and friendly. We did and, a couple of days later, the farrier who shoes the horse that stepped on the kitten, showed up at the Shelter to adopt it. He had heard the story from the property owner and wanted to give this little squirt a good home! He actually showed up with pictures of him playing with the kitten before the injury on the ranch (and pictures of his prior tripod cat that he had to say goodbye to about a year ago).
Slide to watch how Popcorn still loves nuzzles and scritches from our Dr. Maris on these post-amputation videos.
Let’s find loving families for homeless animals in our community. We can only do this work with the compassion and care of YOU so please support the Shelter today!

Meet our eight longest stay kitties of the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter. We are hoping to find them adoptive homes during our Empty the Shelters promotion sponsored by BISSELL Pet Foundation and Cathy Bissell. Could you be their new guardian?
Although they have been in our care the longest, they have also received the most chin scritches and Churro treats. There are a wide variety of personalities - from shy to leader of the band – so there is sure to be a feline-ality for you amongst this group. After a period of acclimation, these kitties will make great sidekicks.
If these ten aren’t a match for you, don’t worry – we have 73 other adoptable kittens and adult cats to choose from. Visit us today! Adoption fees are reduced to $50 for cats and dogs through 12/17.
