Meet Marley, the miniature poodle mix. Marley came into the Shelter as a stray. She was fearful at first but has been warming up to staff and volunteers since her arrival. Staff have noted that when she warms up, she gets in people’s laps and gives kisses. Marley has met other dogs and is interested to interact w/ a wagging tail. Marley would thrive in a home where she gets daily walkies and regular grooming. Could that be you?

Adoption fee includes vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative, microchipping, licensing (dogs), and spay/neuter surgeries.

Staff member Dr. Maris Brenn-White nominates Loris (A313217).😻👑🥰

“Loris is my sleeper hit of a kit-teen queen. Despite her soft-as-a-bunny fur and perfect pink toe beans, she can be reserved in her kennel, which makes her easy to overlook. I think it’s refined royal sensibility. It’s easy to earn her trust though and after a few sniffs, she’s up giving you A+ headbutts, purring like an earthquake, and getting ready to play, play, & play. Discovering how much she loves and wants to be loved is simply one of the best feeling there is.”

It is and we are highlighting a sweet mixed-breed pup. Meet Wish! She approximately 2 years old and weighs 49 lbs. Wish wins for the cutest ears that have their own zip code😍🥰😘

Wish came to the Shelter as a stray so we do not know about her life before now. She is hanging out in a foster home so we can learn more about her in a home environment. Her foster family consists of a couple and their children. They report that Wish has been friendly with everyone in the home – she think’s she’s a lap dog. She has also been friendly with all strangers she encountered out on walks. She met about 5 to 6 of one of the resident children’s friends and she did very well. She sleeps in her dog bed at the end of her foster parent’s bed at night and does not make a peep. She is also house trained and has not had a single accident in the home. She has been extremely mellow at home during the day while her foster parents work from home. She has met other dogs in the neighborhood (a pug, golden retriever, and a husky) and has gotten along with them all. She is still working on leash walking but is off to a great start. If you are interested in making this wish of a pup a dream come true – come to the Shelter to set up an appointment today!

Adoption fee includes vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative, microchipping, licensing (dogs), and spay/neuter surgeries.

Meet Ronnie Girl🩷, the American Tuxedo Penguin mix.

Ronnie came into the Shelter as a stray with her two sisters (whom have since been adopted). Ronnie is apprehensive of new people, dogs and environments. Shelter staff and volunteers have taken this baby under their wing and are showing her that the world is not so scary. Ronnie is becoming more confident through enrichment, thoughtful socialization and TLC time out of her kennel at the Shelter. Things like leash walking and potty training are still a bit new. Snacks and play are great reinforcements that will continue to help Ronnie bond with her new family and learn about the world around her. Adopters are recommended to be patient and have a sense of humor as raising a puppy can be difficult at times (think accidents in the house, chewed up kids toys, etc). Ronnie has begun meeting some other dogs at the Shelter and, with a thoughtful introduction, has shown interest in playing. We do not have any history of Ronnie with kitties. Dog-savvy kids may be a fit but are recommended to meet before adoption.

Interested in adopting your very own American Tuxedo Penguin mix? Come meet Ronnie today!

Adoption fee includes vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative, microchipping, licensing (dogs), and spay/neuter surgeries.

This week our Pet of the weeks is (potential) Homecoming Queen- Mara (A #313635)! Mara came to the Shelter as a stray nursing her kittens. When she first arrived, she was sweet right away with staff – leaning in for pets as well as chin and neck scritches. Clinic staff monitored Mara for a bit as they noted she had a small amount of foreign/hard material in her intestines which was removed at the time of spay. She also has a big belly and sometimes has a slightly hunched posture when she walks. We performed bloodwork and x-rays to check for injuries, liver and kidney issues, and a condition called "megacolon" and did not find any concerning abnormalities - just a little more belly fat and gas than your average kitty. She did arrive at the shelter with a significant wound to her right thigh and while this has healed well, it may be contributing to her somewhat abnormal gait. She does not have any gastrointestinal signs (constipation, vomiting, diarrhea, not wanting to eat) at this time, but the adopter should see their veterinarian if any of these signs or a limp or new/worsening abnormal gait develop in the future.

Cleared from her special medical observation and care at the Shelter, she is now ready for an adoptive home. We do not have any history of Mara with other animals. A home with others may be a fit after a slow and thoughtful acclimation period. Mara has lived outdoors previously and may enjoy a home where she has indoor outdoor access after a period of acclimation.

Our clinic volunteer Sequoia nominated Mara as Homecoming Queen of the cat room! She says “Mara is the quirky queen you didn’t know you were looking for! She has so much love to give and that occasionally overwhelms her. Sometimes she wants to curl up and relax and other times she wants to tell you all about her day. Either was, she will love you unconditionally. With a loud purr and soft purr, she’s got it all!”

Right now SCCAS is having our “Homecoming Adoption Special!” Take a cat or kitten home for $25! This adoption special is at both of our locations- Santa Cruz and Watsonville -September 20-28th. Come to SCCAS and find the new queen or king of your home!

The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter is located at 1001 Rodriguez St, and is open 7 days a week from 11am-6pm.

September 28 is . Rabies is 100% preventable - you can protect yourself, your family, and your pets by keeping your pets up to date on their vaccines and by avoiding contact with bats and other wild animals.

Be aware: Wild animals throughout California can carry rabies. Dogs, cats, and people can get rabies when they are bitten by infected wild animals, especially bats and skunks. Never touch or try to feed wild animals.

Dogs and cats are naturally curious and will often approach a wild animal that they find. If your pet finds or catches a bat, call local animal control to collect the bat. Do not touch or try to capture the bat yourself. Some bats can spread rabies to people and animals if they bite. See your veterinarian regularly to be sure your pets are up to date on their rabies vaccines and other shots.

For more information visit https://www.avma.org/resources-tools/one-health/rabies

We will be providing a free rabies vaccination at our upcoming Healthy Pets For All pop up clinics.

We have 5 ravishing roosters available for adoption! These handsome fellows are all looking for caring, neighborhood-approved homes where they can happily and safely exhibit their natural talents as alarm clocks, flock guardians, insect (and even snake!) control, and garden (and possibly egg) fertilizers! Roosters, mostly because they can be loud, are not allowed by many cities and neighborhood associations, and special rules and ordinances can apply to their keeping. You’ll need to be sure you know what rules apply where your rooster will live before you adopt.

Roosters are $25 each (or less if you bring your own carrier or adopt more than one bird). All are staying at our Santa Cruz shelter location.

Marty, ID A315200, is an adolescent who arrived looking a little puny, but he’s starting to gain weight and fill out. With regular anti-parasite treatments and a healthy diet, he’ll grow to be a handsome member of your flock!

Levi, ID A315011, is a 6 month old barred rock with plenty of pluck and personality.

Reese, ID A314807, is bantam-sized and possibly a Polish mix. He’d love to shimmy his fancy, fluffy feathers around your barnyard...

Rock-a-doodle, ID A315445, is nearly a year old and a formidable size (likely a Brahma mix) for defending a flock. He’s got a history of living with a full flock of hens and getting along very peacefully with them.

Rocky, ID A315504, is also very large, a Brahma, and is just flat out GORGEOUS! He loved looking out for his flock, but wasn’t allowed in his former ‘hood. He’ll be the star of any hobby farm or ranch!

Staff member Jill nominates Boston A313516 & Tokyo A313520 as Homecoming Co-Queens!

“These girls are guaranteed to bring smiles to their new family’s face. Whether they are snuggling with each other, saying hi to you, or playing – they are spirited curious kittens that are basically sunshine in a cat body. Adopting two cats is great for the kitties as well as their people. When you are at work, they keep each other company. Also, having a buddy improves their behavior in a home as it allows them the enrichment of play and socialization that they cannot necessarily get in the same way from their human guardian. If you are looking for a daily dose of dopamine in your life – come meet these two today!”

Oso was swooped up yesterday by this lovely family. He had just come up for adoption and they were in the right place at the right time.

We wish this family the best as they get adjusted to their new lives. Remember the 3-3-3 rule! Three days for initial decompression, three weeks to learn the routines of your household, and three months to start to feel relaxed and at home.

Meet these three little fur babies looking for their forever homes. Mariposa Lily, Trillium and Dandelion were in foster care and now back at the Shelter. Come meet them today! We want to thank foster parent Jennifer for giving these cuties lots of love, attention and socialization.

Mariposa Lily aka MiniMe is the spitting image of her mom. She has her mom's beautiful markings -- white socks, a little pink nose and pink toe beans. You can count on her to be sleeping in adorably funny positions, often on her back, and she has been very photogenic. She isn't one to lay about however, she's all business when it comes to chasing string toys and is surprisingly quick.

Her favorite cuddle partner is her tortoiseshell sister but she is young and capable of being friends with other kittens or cats. Ideally she needs someone to be her playmate. Mariposa is a happy, friendly kitten that would be a great addition to any sort of home.

Trillium is a pretty tortoiseshell or tortie cat and the most adventurous of the bunch. She was always the first to try something new and was never afraid to explore. I had trouble catching photos of this little dynamo in focus because she was often in motion.

I often found her curled up with her sister Mariposa Lily, but she's a well-adjusted, charming little kitten that can adapt to a variety of situations and homes and would really like it if you'd come see her and the rest of the litter. They are all social, snuggly, like to be picked up and cuddled and also love to play!

Dandelion is an amazingly soft tabby who was voted most likely to chill out while being held and also the best bet for a lap cat, when she's not zooming around after balls, mice and other toys. Like the rest of her litter she has a great demeanor and would learn to adapt to a variety of living situations. She's social and sweet.

This little fluffy Dandelion would love to meet you soon!

That said we are noticing that so many female cats are still unspayed, and having litters.

So .... October we've decided is now SPAYtober!! 🍁🍂

Of course we still want to see the boys, and puppers too, but we're making extra room for the girlies 😻 Call us and get them in! Let’s fill up that October calendar! 831-724-4988

09/18/2024

Meet the “teenagers” of the 2024 kitten season. These teenagers are typically 4 to 11 months old but originally came in as underage, tiny kittens at the beginning of the kitten season. Their littermates have been adopted and these felines have grown up in our care. Most have been in our care for two to five months. As time goes on, more and more younger kittens come in and get adopted leaving these growing kitties to get passed over. But each and every one of these teens are special. As near-adults, it’s much easier to get a sense of their adult personality than it is with younger kittens. It’s a little easier to decide whether they’re a good match for your household and/or what you’re looking for as far as kitty character! They have the kitten energy, socialization and pep of the youngsters but have more wisdom, personality and spirit of adults. They often have spent time in foster homes and have gotten lots of TLC from our lovely volunteer group so they get A+ socialization before adoption. What’s not to love!? If you want to add an often overlooked kitty to your home – come meet these teens today!

Adoption fee includes vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative, microchipping, licensing (dogs), and spay/neuter surgeries.

PupDate🐾🥰🙏

“One year ago today, we adopted a little yellow puppy from the Santa Cruz Animal Shelter. I am writing to say what a WONDERFUL dog he has grown up to be. He is always ready to play or nap or go in the car or lie in the sun or practice his tricks. He loves his whole family with his whole heart, but especially his boy. He also has the best ears of any dog ever!

We are so glad he found his way to the shelter and that we found our way there to make him ours.

Liz, Christopher and Leander

p.s. - Whimzees and Wubbas are some of Draco’s favorite treats and toys, so watch for some coming to the shelter for the other dogs via the donation list on Chewy!”

09/15/2024

These pups are ready to fuel up your sweetness and silliness tanks! They came to the Shelter as part of an accidental litter between a German Shepherd and an apparently smaller mystery dad dog. Based on their current size, these pups will likely grow to be medium-sized, not G. Shep sized. They’re still learning a lot about the world around them, so things like potty training, meeting new people and pets, and leash walking are all fairly new concepts, so adopters will need to be patient and gentle in the transition. Puppies, as cute as they are, are a lot of work. Adopters should anticipate spending a lot of resources (time, treats, patience etc…) towards guiding and shaping them into well socialized adults. A home with another dog may be a fit - we recommend arranging a puppy-to-dog introduction at the Shelter prior to adoption. We don’t have any history of these puppies with kids or cats. If you are looking for pups that are ready to hit the road with you – come meet these cuties today!

A big thanks to photographer Yekun for the photos of these adorable pups.

Puppies are a LOT of work but also very rewarding and fun. We advise adopters to make sure they are ready for all the time and patience that is required prior to adopting. If you think you are ready to have a puppy companion, come into the Shelter to talk about the process of meet and greets & adoption!

Adoption fee includes vaccinations, deworming, flea preventative, microchipping, licensing (dogs), and spay/neuter surgeries.
