At Common Roots Farm, people with and without disabilities can participate on our urban farm, taking care of plants and animals, and creating friendships with one another that sustain everyone. We grow a variety of vegetables, herbs, fruit and flowers while providing farm skills training, internships, environmental and gardening education and micro-enterprise opportunities on approximately four acres right in the heart of Santa Cruz, CA.

The last of our lush cover crops will come down this week via flail mowing, feeding our soil in preparation for feeding our crops. Great for w**d suppression, adding organic matter to our soil, improving water infiltration, feeding our soil's microbiology, and drawing down atmospheric nitrogen. A cereal-legume mix, these plants are working overtime for our 2025 CSA customers! Can you spot Summer?

A tragic accident cost our beloved sheep, Chuggie, her life this week. She was attacked by two pit bulls who got under our farm gate and, though she tried valiantly to hang on, the injuries were just too great. We have had her since she was a few months old and are all so sad to lose her😢😢😢 And yes, the dogs' owner feels terrible, too. Chuggie was an important part of our farm and will be much missed. She made us happy - brought everyone a great deal of joy.😓

Locals, if you are a parent of an adult living with an intellectual/developmental disability, please consider sharing your ideas during our upcoming Brainstorming Session. Bring your thoughts and ideas for how we can provide enriching opportunities on our farm for these members of our community.

We are very excited to launch our new Common Roots Farm Membership Program! Because of incredible community support, we have become a successful market farm offering a variety of activities intended to enrich life for people with disabilities. We now produce over 20 food crops, 25 varieties of cut flowers, and farm fresh eggs on our wheelchair accessible farm. Our membership program will help us continue to grow and expand our missions. We are committed to meeting the increasing demand from Day Programs and Post-secondary Education sites to serve young adults who visit weekly to help feed our animals, tend our accessible garden, learn job skills, and spend time in nature. In addition, we want to host more seasonal and year-round activities to support adults with intellectual/ developmental disabilities. We’ll keep farming, of course, but there’s also a lot of interest from our farmers with disabilities in expanding into cooking, arts and crafts classes, music concerts, and more. Our Story

Common Roots Farm (formerly Costanoa Commons) is a partnership of families coming together to create an organic farm in the city of Santa Cruz, CA, where people with disabilities and others grow healthy food and build community. By producing organic food and living in a more sustainable way, we can make a difference. At Common Roots Farm we care for plants, animals, and one another. We grow for life. Our founding families recognize the opportunities for community building that can take place on an urban farm. Our vision includes establishing employment, social, educational and recreational opportunities that enrich lives and integrate adults with disabilities into the wider community. Our dream includes creating: • A community organic farm in an urban environment • Hydroponic and aquaponic components offering additional skills training and jobs • Building a barn/community center offering a variety of activities daily • Universal design for accessibility, green building features • Easy access to urban life, continuing education, recreation, and choice!
