will be partnering with Equi-First Aid (an international company) and hosting an equine first-aid course at the end of this month, and we wanted to invite anyone who is around this area! There is a limit on the amount of people who can sign up, so it is first come first serve. It’s an all-day course, with lecture in the morning then hands-on practice with Habitat's very own horses in the afternoon. You get a certificate at the end as well proving that you are equine first-aid certified! The cost is $150 and you can register using the link down below or in our story! If you have horses at home or you want to learn more about horse first-aid, you should definitely attend! It will be Saturday, August 31st at 9:30 am! Please contact Habitat for Horses if you have any questions!

πŸŽ† HAPPY 4TH OF JULY πŸŽ†
The clinic will be closed today, but Dr. Jenkins will be available for emergencies. ☎️ Please call DON'T TEXT ☎️
Sharing this information again for tonight's festivities - be safe & smart out there!

Here are some tips to keep your equine friends safe during the booming festivities:
πŸŽ† Be aware of scheduled firework displays in your area and communicate with your neigh-bors, maybe kindly ask them to give you some notice if they are planning to use fireworks.
⚠️ If your horses are staying out, check their paddock or pasture for any hazards like rocks, branches, or holes that could lead to injury if the horses start bolting.
πŸ“» Turn up the radio and the fans in the barn to drown out some of the loud noises and leave the lights on to help lessen the effect of the bright flashes.πŸ’‘
🎧 Consider using equine ear plugs (small foam balls that fit into the ear canal to help reduce sound)
βš•οΈ If you are really worried about your horse's safety or are unsure, consult your veterinarian about calming agents and sedatives.
🐢🐱 Practice the same techniques with your small animals, too. Keep them inside and distracted. When you take them outside - have them on a leash to potty & stay with them to lessen the chance of them running away while alone.
If you are planning on setting off fireworks yourself this week, enjoy the celebrations, but please be considerate of the people and the animals living around you. God bless America! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Teeny little love 😍
If you've had an appointment in the last week then you've met our amazing 4th year LSU vet student, Mariah!
She's been with us for many years as an intern prior to vet school & we can't wait to see just how successful she is in her endeavors in veterinary medicine! She's amazing and we're so happy to have her with us!

With hurricane season being upon us, we'd like to get an evacuation list of barns & properties together for our clients to utilize in the event of an emergency event.
A majority of our clientele board in flood prone areas or on the coast and would be interested/in need of a plan & place to move their horse(s) &/or livestock further inland. We will be creating a spreadsheet to keep all contacts organized and available to be sent out to those who request it.
If you have a barn or stalls in working order and would like to extend any of your available opening(s) to those who might need it, please email us with the following details:
β€’ Your name, address, & phone number
β€’ Barn location & address (must have running water & electricity)
β€’ Number of stalls/ paddocks available.
β€’ Vaccine requirements for your property.
β€’ Types of animals you can house.
β€’ Boarding fees (if applicable)
Please email information to:
[email protected]

Also! If you have connections in our neighboring out of town areas that could help, please forward them this request!
Thank you so much! In the face of an emergency, we all have to work together, and we greatly appreciate any help you can provide!

July 4th is almost upon us, and many equestrians and farm owners out there are already dreading the fireworks that are going to terrorize their animals in the night.

Keep them inside and distracted, and ask your regular small animal vet to prescribe calming meds if needed - call them now to ensure ample time for medication filling and dosing. When you take them outside - have them on a leash to potty & stay with them to lessen the chance of them running away while alone.
If you are planning on setting off fireworks yourself this week, enjoy the celebrations, but please be considerate of the people and the animals living around you. God bless America! πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Hurricane season is here and being prepared ahead of time is key.
Have your horses vaccines (VE&W encephalities, West Nile Virus, Rabies, Tetanus) & Coggins updated now - please do not call us the day before or the day you plan to evacuate in hopes of getting them done right away - we could potentially not be available to fulfill last minute requests depending on the storm and our own families & plans.
πŸ“’ Remember: we still have emergency kits available for purchase at the clinic - they include all essential items to help you stabilize most emergencies while waiting for veterinary care to arrive πŸ“’
When a hurricane approaches, the safety and well-being of your horse(s) become the top priority.
β€’ Evacuation Plan: Have a detailed evacuation plan in place, including routes, designated shelters, and transportation arrangements for your horses.

β€’ Identification: Ensure each horse has visible and updated identification, such as microchips, ID tags, or neck straps, with your contact information.

β€’ Secure Structures: Reinforce barns, stables, and other structures to withstand strong winds. Remove any loose items that could become projectiles.

β€’ Safe Zones: Identify safe turnout areas away from trees, power lines, and flood-prone areas. Fencing should be secure and free of hazards.

β€’ Records and Photos: Keep copies of important documents, like ownership papers, health records and coggins, in waterproof containers. Take photos of each horse for identification.

β€’ Practice: Familiarize your horses with trailers, transport vehicles, and other people handling them in advance. Regularly practice loading and unloading to reduce stress during evacuation.

Do you believe in the healing power of horses? We do.
🌞 offers equine-assisted services to help our military community and individuals with disabilities reach their unbridled potential. Because no one should be forgotten.

Available resources, such as traditional talk therapy, do not appeal to many in the military community who have experienced or witnessed trauma. However, horses and a supportive community can play key roles in their restorative journey.

Those who have served our country deserve a safe community where they find healing, purpose, and a sense of belonging. That's what Horses for Heroes is all about.
