UGH -- The dreaded GRASS SEED - AKA .. FOXTAIL.
Foxtails can be dangerous for dogs and cats because they are barbed seeds that can get stuck in your pet's skin, eyes, ears, nose, or mouth. They can cause serious infections and are very painful. The only treatment for foxtails is to remove them.

Wellness Visits -- A wellness examination is a routine medical examination of a pet who appears healthy, as opposed to an examination of a pet who is ill. A wellness examination may also be called a “check-up” or a “annual examination”. The focus of a wellness examination is to make sure your pet is as healthy as possible and give necessary vaccines. We have a dedicated doctor daily to help you with your pets Wellness Visit. Call or come by today for a Wellness Visit for your pet.

Sweet Pepper was with us for a routine dental. Dental cleaning is an important part of your pets health. A dental cleaning visit will include a thorough dental examination, teeth cleaning, and polishing to remove tartar and plaque that causes periodontal disease. Dental cleanings for pets are similar to human dental cleanings, but require anesthesia to safely examine and clean the teeth. Call us today to schedule a dental for your fur baby.

*-* HALLOWEEN DANGERS TO DOGS & CATS *-*

During the week of Halloween, calls to the veterinarians increase. The four most common food-related Halloween hazards for pets are chocolate, candy overindulgence, raisins and candy wrappers.

CHOCOLATE
Of all candy, chocolate is one of the most toxic to pets. Many dogs are inherently attracted to the smell and taste of chocolate, making it a significant threat. In general, the darker and more bitter the chocolate, the more poisonous it is. The chemicals in chocolate that are dangerous to pets, methylxanthines, are similar to caffeine and more heavily concentrated in the darker varieties. In fact, a 50-pound dog can be sickened by ingesting only one ounce of Baker’s chocolate! To avoid issues, keep Halloween candy well out of the reach of pets at all times.

CANDY
Pets are indiscriminate when it comes to eating tasty treats and can gorge themselves on snacks and food meant for humans. Large ingestions of sugary, high-fat candy can lead to pancreatitis in pets. Potentially fatal, pancreatitis is inflammation of the pancreas and very painful. It may not show up for two to four days after the pet ingests the candy. Symptoms include decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, and potentially.

GRAPES ad RAISINS
Some people prefer to distribute healthy snacks instead of candy on Halloween, such as mini-boxes of raisins. These are extremely poisonous to dogs! Very small amounts of raisins (and grapes) can cause kidney failure in dogs and, potentially, cats. When it comes to your pets, raisins deserve the same pet-proofing treatment as chocolate – stored in secure containers far from their reach.

Stay safe and

We are celebrating Veterinary Technician week every day here at Smith Vet!!

Andres is one of our “behind the scenes” kennel assistants. All of our kennel assistants are part of our “backbone,” and the hospital could not run for one day without them.
Andres says he accepted his job at Smith Vet because he thought it would be a great way to learn more about the field. His favorite part of work is meeting all of the pets, especially the cats.

Stay tuned for more staff spotlights!!🌟🐾

KENNEL COUGH ALERT!

Here at Smith Veterinary Hospital we are seeing a very large number of Kennel Cough Cases (Canine Infectious Tracheobronchitis) and there appears to be a widespread outbreak in Santa Fe and surrounding area as the cases are not isolated to any single common location.

Due to the current outbreak, we would like to advise all dog owners that it may be wise to limit contact with other dogs outside of your normal household and avoid common play areas like dog parks. Any dogs who attend dog daycare, boarding, or grooming facilities may consider a booster of the bordetella vaccine NOW even if they are not technically “DUE” to reduce the risk of acquiring or transmitting this highly contagious virus. Even fully vaccinated dogs can sometimes catch Kennel Cough, but the risk is much lower.

Fully vaccinated dogs can also transmit Kennel Cough even without ever showing signs of being infected. Additionally, because most dogs are contagious for 2-3 days before showing signs of illness, it can be very difficult to limit the spread of Kennel Cough without practicing isolation from other dogs.
