Meet Phoebe - a beautiful 17 pound Maine C**n kitty who really enjoys her food at home. She came in for a dental prophylaxis today to make sure her teeth stay healthy and she can eat comfortably for many years to come. Dr. Dobesh, Abby and Jennifer enjoyed spending the day with her and ensuring she had a cat-friendly experience in the hospital.

Kidney (or renal) disease is very common in dogs and cats, and it may be reversible or permanent based on underlying causes. The disease could be a result of age-related changes to the kidneys, acute injury or toxin ingestion, congenital defects present from birth, or in rare cases, a side effect of some medications. To prevent kidney disease or slow its progression, it's vital to stay regular with wellness visits so that together, we can monitor renal levels with blood work and urinalysis and catch any changes ASAP.

We get it: when your pet is itchy, you start to scratch, too! The good news is your pet doesn’t have to live with incessant itchiness. Learn to spot the signs, then book a visit so that together, we can discover the cause and explore options for long-lasting relief, like:

More Photos of Nala Marie (see previous Arthur's Fund post).

02/21/2024

We would like to tell you about Nala Marie and how Arthur’s Fund assisted in her recovery.

Nala was a 1.5-pound kitten who was brought to Smith Veterinary Hospital by a Good Samaritan in June of 2023. Nala was a stray who wandered into the Good Samaritans home looking for shelter. The Good Samaritan knew Nala was hurt and brought her directly to Smith Veterinary Hospital. Nala was seen by Dr. Sanchez and she was diagnosed with a broken right hind leg. It was determined that amputation was the best and most cost effect way to get Nala out of pain and on the way to recovery.

Unfortunately, the Good Samaritan could not keep Nala or afford to help with treatment of her injuries, so Dr. Sanchez contacted another client who was looking to help pets in need. This client was able to adopt Nala Marie and cover much of the cost associated in amputating the tiny kitten’s leg. Arthur’s Fund also covered a portion of the cost and helped bridge the financial gap between allowing Nala Marie to be treated and getting her into her adoptive parents’ home.

This is Nala 9 months later. Her amputation has not slowed Nala down one bit! She is happy and brings joy to her family every day.

If you would like to make a personal donation to Arthur’s Fund, you can send a check made out to Smith Veterinary Hospital with Arthur’s Fund in the memo, call (505) 982-4418, or come into the hospital to contribute to the account with cash or a credit card. This is non-tax deductible. Thank you for your consideration.

Over the last two weeks, we have shared some information about Arthur's Fund. Today, we want to share Luna's story. Luna is a 4-year-old dog that was attacked in her yard by a much larger, unknown dog. After the attack Luna ran away after being chased by the large dog. When Luna presented to SVH as an emergency, she had been missing for 24 hours. Her owners had found her hiding in a bush and sought immediate medical care. She had a significant wound on her hip. The wound was so severe that her pelvis was broken during the attack. Her elbow was also broken in two places, and she was in shock.

With the help of Arthur’s Fund, Keeble’s Fund, Dr. Kathy Dobesh’s surgical skills (and the care of three other veterinarians and many technicians at SVH), Luna was able to start the treatment she needed, while the owner sourced additional funding. Luna’s owner was able to cover the cost for most of her care but needed a little extra funding to bridge the financial gap. This preliminary financial aid helped Luna’s owner to make the decision to continue care and give Luna the medical treatment necessary to survive. This is what Arthur's Fund is all about! Luna was able to receive care and is in the initial stages of recovery but is making excellent improvements. She is expected to have a functional recovery.

Although this is an extreme case, there are many more pets that these funds can help. Whether it is to cover an emergency exam fee, take an X-ray, run blood work or to pay for medications needed to get better. Arthur’s Fund plays a vital role in helping financially toward the medical care of pets daily at Smith Vet. It can help those clients and pets which need just a little more financial aid to improve their medical care and outcome of treatment.

Allow us a few moments to tell you about Arthur's Fund...

Smith Veterinary Hospital- A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner is dedicated to the health and well-being of our community’s pet population. To support this mission, Arthur’s Fund was created. Arthur's Fund helps clients in financial need with their sick or injured pets. Arthur’s Fund was established in 2000 and has been able to help thousands of pets over the past 23 years.

We have clients who must choose between paying a bill, buying groceries, or treating their pet. Arthur’s Fund is designed to bridge a gap by helping with partial payment for an office visit, a diagnostic test, medical treatment, or, in some cases, for euthanasia if a pet has no options for treatment. The fund is made up entirely of donations from Smith Veterinary Hospital clients, and 100% of these donations go directly to helping sick or injured pets.

Over the last 12 months, we have been fortunate enough to have helped many families and their sick pets with an average of $200 per pet. All veterinarians at our hospital have access to Arthur’s Fund and have used these client donations to help pets and our clients in times of financial need. A client in need may use the fund one time, and by keeping the amount of aid to a conservative level, we can continue to help more pets and clients.

Due to the rise in the pet population, the cost of serving the community after the pandemic and the veterinarian shortage, we are in greater need of donations. Over the last year, we have also seen more emergency cases fill our hospital lobby as we take walk-in cases from other community hospitals that cannot accommodate their client’s needs. More people in financial need have used Arthur’s Fund this year than any previous year. For this reason, we are asking monetary donations so that we can continue helping clients and pets in need. Any contribution you are able to make can change the lives of one or more pets.

If you’d like to make a personal donation to Arthur’s Fund, you can send a check made out to Smith Veterinary Hospital with Arthur’s Fund in the memo, call (505) 982-4418, or come into the hospital to contribute to the account with cash
