New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding

New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding NMCTR’s mission is to enrich and expand the lives of children, youth, and adults with special needs through equine-assisted services. https://linktr.ee/NMCTR_23

The New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding (NMCTR) began providing equine therapy services to the Santa Fe area in 2007. We are a member of PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship). PATH, Int. is the governing international body for equine related therapies and activities for adults and children with physical or mental needs. At NMCTR, we believe the horse is the motivator tha

t connects therapy treatment to sport, pleasure, responsibility, and education. The dynamic relationship between students, instructors, volunteers and horses is the strength of our program. Students of all ages and ABILITIES learn riding skills and all aspects of horse care. The ultimate goal for our students is to learn to ride as independently as possible and to gain self-confidence from their accomplishments. The emphasis is on the individual abilities as well as their needs. The Center’s PATH certified instructors design each lesson with the individual specific needs in mind. Our goal is to provide our students with:
◾Physical development
◾Emotional growth
◾Intellectual stimulation

In addition to individual students, NMCTR offer group lesson. Our clients include the Santa Fe Public Schools (students with special needs), The New Mexico School for the Deaf, Aspen Magnet School, Senior Centers and day-hab facilities. Since our beginning, we have helped countless students in the Santa Fe area, and have provided equine therapeutic benefits for people with the following needs:
•Stroke and Brain Trauma
•Cerebral Palsy
•Autism
•ADHD
•Emotional disturbance
•Hearing and sight impaired
•Senior Citizens
•Developmental delayed
•Down Syndrome
•Speech / language impairment
•Muscular Dystrophy

NMCTR offers the most comprehensive and effective therapeutic riding program in the state of New Mexico.

TODAY is ! Support Our Special Horses!

This we're reaching out to ask for your support in funding some very special horses who play a crucial role in our community by supporting people with disabilities.

Why We Need Your Help:

Caring for our wonderful horses comes with significant costs. Providing them with proper nutrition, medical care, and living conditions is essential to ensure they can continue their vital work. That's why we need your help to keep them healthy and happy.

How You Can Help:

Consider making a one-time donation or becoming a monthly donor. Any amount you can give will have a positive impact on both our horses and the individuals they help.

We emphasized the importance of Free Access Hay to our horse’s physical and mental health in our previous posts. Here's how your contribution makes a difference:

- $27 buys a bale of hay. Our herd of 8 eats 2-3 bales a day. That’s about $75 per day!!

At NMCTR our horse’s health and wellbeing is of the upmost concern. One way we provide a high level of care is through free access hay. This offers an array of both physical and mental health benefits.

The benefits of free access hay?

- Digestive Health: Free access hay keeps horse’s stomach and hindgut active, which helps prevent ulcers and colic.

- Nutrients: Hay provides horses with energy, carbohydrates, fats, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins.

- Fiber: Is essential to horses digestive health.

- Chewing: free access to hay satisfies a horse’s need to chew.

- Contentment: free access to hay can help keep horses content and occupied.

- Warmth: Horses need to consume more calories in the colder months to stay warm.

Fun fact: Horses have a psychological need to chew. They produce about 12 liters of saliva per day from chewing.

This , we're reaching out to ask for your support in funding some very special horses and their hay fund!

The Magic of Our Horses:

These loving, sensitive, and large furry friends truly work magic with their human companions. They bring joy and contribute to the cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being of everyone they interact with. Their gentle nature and incredible intuition make them invaluable partners in therapy and support.

Here at NMCTR, we ensure our horses get the same love and care they show our students. One way we do this is through providing free access hay. This ensures optimum comfort, happiness, and health for our therapy horses.

What is free access hay?

Free choice hay is a feeding system where horses have access to hay at all times instead of being fed at specific meal times.

Fun fact: Did you know that the average horse consumes 15-25lbs of hay per day?

This , we're reaching out to ask for your support in funding some very special horses who play a crucial role in our community by supporting people with disabilities.

The New Mexico Center for Therapeutic Riding (NMCTR) recently received another grant to support the School Outreach Program. The City of Santa Fe Children and Youth Commission granted NMCTR a $10,000 grant to be used for classroom scholarships for the School Outreach Program.

The School Outreach Program is an effective and data-driven program that provides an equine-assisted program for under-served, low-income children and youth with disabilities (autism, developmental delay, learning delays, hearing/sight impaired, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, ADHD, etc.) that attend with their special education classrooms from participating Santa Fe schools.

NMCTR’s School Outreach Program is beloved by the Santa Fe community’s special education teachers and administrators, as it has helped to show marked improvement in students’ capabilities in a myriad of areas.

Thank you to the City of Santa Fe for the support!

We are at Buffalo Thunder today for the New Mexico Public Education Department’s first-ever Parent University, a two-day event designed to support families of children with disabilities.

This event focuses on enhancing communication between families, schools, and communities. We are having a great time enlightening everyone about equine-assisted services.

✨Equine Enrichment Day ✨

We created fun enrichment activities for our horses, to help improve their mental and physical wellbeing, by stimulating their natural instincts. This allows our horses to reduce stress, provides horses with choices and control over their environment, and provides stimulating ways to receive food! Our activities included:

✨ Gatorade Station: they got to taste different flavors of Gatorade and drank the ones they liked.
✨ Carrot Station: they had to get carrots off a hanging rope.
✨ Pine Cone Station: they had to move pine cones to find yummy treats.
✨ Bobbing for Apples: this was a horse favorite!
✨ Scavenger Hunt: we placed apples and carrots all over their turnout for them to find later in the day.

Lessons are canceled today due to weather ⛈️☔️Stay warm and we look forward to seeing everyone next week!

🐴New Herd Member🐴

Welcome our newest equine, Rugged! 💜

Rugged is a 16 yo Appendix Quarter Horse. His grand-sire is legendary Rugged Lark. He was born in VA, moved to AZ right before he turned 3, and spent most of his career doing 3-day eventing. In 2016, he was Area X Preliminary Champion! After taking a young teen to many competitions, he came to NMCTR ready to serve people with disabilities! 🐎

He is a great addition to our herd! He is kind, gentle, likes to grunt, and has an Altoids obsession!

Rugged is currently looking for a sponsor! Sponsor him today at: https://nmctr.networkforgood.com/projects/197049-horse-sponsorship
