FEET TIME!!!
Ok no, we are not restarting nail trimming here at Teca Tu... this is the nail trimmer, Linz, writing, so sorry to not have resumed this service. Life changes!
However, I think it so important to check out your dogs and cats feet daily.
Since I pet sit, and help in dog rescue, I see a lot of feet issues that could easily be avoided with a simple nightly foot check.
Dogs licking paws incessantly... check with a fine toothed comb.
My dog never licks her feet, so when she recently did, she had a sore between 2 toes.
For dogs with long or curly hair, they gets tight wads of matting between the toes and main pad, these hurt!
Fox tails or Grass seeds! Ticks and Fleas! Long nails, cracked nails, curling nails...
Cracked pads, dry pads, burnt pads, all bad.
All very uncomfortable for dogs and cats.
So do a check... you can also do a foot soak to clean, try some warm water with a touch of raw apple cider vinegar mixed in, unless there is a bleeding wound. Or try some weak Epsom salt too.
Feet are so very important in our pets and they often go unchecked.

Let's get our pets even healthier, vary their diet to maximize nutrition!
This is a great article highlighting the dangers of highly processed dry dog food.
Our biggest stance, no pet can be healthy on just dry food that gets heated by over 700 degrees in most cases.
We would not be healthy ourselves eating that way...
So don't make them eat that way.
But do NOT forget some veggies and fruits are toxic to your furry best friends!
My dogs favorites are...
Cucumber, Blueberries, Blackberries, Banana, Strawberries, Radishes!

I've been talking with many people who still do not know that TICKS are a big threat to our pets in Santa Fe.
Climate change for our pets poses the really big risks of Heartworm, from mosquitoes, and Erlichia and Tularemia from ticks, plus fleas from rodents.
Dogs in our area should be on heartworm prevention and flea/tick prevention.
Cats should be wormed regularly and be on flea/tick prevention.
Ticks tend to thrive in humid climates, but drought-stricken New Mexico is home to several varieties.

Hot and a bit muggy, monsoon season is upon us Santa Fe!
We love our monsoons of course, but did you know that our hotter than normal climate for our area, means pets and people are now at risk of attracting ticks, fleas and more mosquitos than previous years.

BUT Please keep an extra close eye on your furry and feathered friends.
They don't understand our joy of fireworks.

HEAT, Yes we have 2 cool days ahead, BUT, we are in one of the hottest summers ever in Santa Fe!
So hot I've been trying not to melt and keeping my pets safe, and neglecting this post.
I am STILL seeing dogs walking during the heat of the day on the city streets, this is NOT acceptable!
My own dog tried to tell me 2 days ago that the leather seats in the car were too hot, and I thought nothing of it.
I just knew the ground was too hot, but found out when I sat that the seats were painfully hot as well.
Please do not walk your dog in this heat during the hottest part of the day... not sure, do the test pictured.
Please don't leave your dog in the car, and if you see a dog in a car call the shelter or local police.
This all applies to cats too of course!

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!
We hope your furry kids treat you to just as much fun and food as your 2-legged human children do!
Word of Advice...
1.) If the dog brings you a bone for dinner, don't eat it, it was probably buried for 5 years in the backyard.
2.) If the cat brings you a lizard, or other unmentionable critters, same goes, yuck, don't eat it.
BUT, Thank them profusely of course!

It is time to get OUTSIDE Santa Fe...
So don't forget to take your 4-leggers with you!
The weather is splendid and our daylight hours are the longest of the year, time to have some good old fashioned fun, camping, swimming, hiking, your furry kids enjoy these things as much as you do.
Just a small sampling of our outdoor accoutrements include Ruffwear Life Jacket Flotation Devices, comfy warm Sleeping Bags and even Travel Beds.

COVID-19 Update!
Our store policy will be to still require wearing of masks in our store for the time being.
As of May 15th, 2021 the New Mexico state mandates were changed to align with the CDC guidelines.
Stating all FULLY VACCINATED individuals no longer need to wear a mask in public spaces, with some exceptions.
Those include, allowing businesses to form their own policies regarding patronage and masks.
This will not be forever, we are monitoring things closely, every day.
We have no idea who is vaccinated and who is not, for that reason, at this time, we will require you to be masked while inside our store.
This will ensure the safety of every single one of you, and the small family of 5 that makes up the Teca Tu staff.
We will take this one month at a time, and we very much appreciate your on-going support.

The original owner began the store by designing and making vests and coats for dogs out of her home. The business grew from there and now the vests and coats have become our signature item.
Teca Tu has won the Santa Fe Reporter βBest of Santa Feβ Top Three Pet Boutiques award every year since 2004, and was the 2008 βFeatured Boutiqueβ in Pet Product News International as well as having received their Outstanding Adoption Award for 2010. Teca Tu has been serving Santa Feβs and the worldβs dogs, cats, and their humans since 1995. With a combined pet industry knowledge and experience of over 40 years, it is Laurie, Joanne and Miraβs goal to provide the best customer service possible, while enjoying each opportunity to meet customers, their special pets, and help them with their pet needs. We are committed and passionate about working with New Mexican animal charities and see this work as our highest purpose. Food and pet items donated by us and our wonderful customers go to the New Mexico Homeless Project, the Santa Fe Animal Shelter & Humane Society, Santa Fe Small Animal Rescue and other rescue agencies.
Laurie has 2 Bernese Mountain Dogs, Nellie and Tank. When they calm down a bit (LOL) they will be the store mascots!! Joanne has 5 cats named Chama, Jasper, Cheyenne, Moses and Hop Singh. Mira has 2 dogs whose names are Sandy and Duke and a cat named Tawny. Cole has 2 dogs named Bandit and Lila , 1 cat named Pie and 2 horses-Star and Chester.
And now a word about our namesake, Teca Tu. Teca Tu was a stray picked up on the side of the road near a town called Tecolote in New Mexico by the founder of the store, Diane Burchard. Teca Tu was a mutt and she was the queen of the store for years before she passed away. In memory of Teca Tu and dogs like herβfiercely loyal and survivorsβweβve kept her name on the door.
And that is what we want our store to be, both the brick and mortar one and the website: A high energy, fun and animal loving place where all of us who are fiercely loyal to our pets are welcome.
