Frank had a wonderful outing today showing off his skills he’s learning during our 2 week Board & Train program. He aced his heel, down, stay, auto-sit, and focus. As a reward, he got belly rubs from staff and carefully selected his take home treat. Way to go Frank!

“WAIT” at the front door.
Is your dog a door dasher? By this I mean your pup bolts past you out of the front door (not to be confused with the Door Dash delivery guy 😉).
Doorway safety is very important for your dog to learn. If a dog bolts out of the front door and runs into the street, there could be a car coming and we can imagine what happens next. “Wait” can be used before going in/out of any door, the car, and even when put on a walk and crossing the street. Your pup’s safety is top priority.
Shooter demonstrated this perfectly! When he came to us on Friday he would immediately push past us, and he’s a big boy. With lots of continuous practice, he is getting the hand of it.
Shooter is here for a week long Board & Train. 🦮

Let’s get controversial! 🤔 Do you want to LOOK kind, or do you want to BE kind?
If you want to LOOK kind, continue using a harness and be dragged around by your dog. They will ignore you and pull you, using the harness exactly what it was meant for.
If you want to BE kind, properly use a prong collar to deliver gentle communication to your dog without hurting, choking, or causing damage. If you have a problem with what people think, take a moment to educate them! The people who won’t give you the time of day, just aren’t your people.
When your dog pulls on their flat collar, do they sound like they’re being choked out? Prong collars were designed with a dog’s safety in mind. Pressure is evenly distributed around the dog’s neck, so it’s impossible to cut off a dog’s air supply. They were also designed to prevent injury to the dog’s trachea and larynx.
Let’s think of it this way. When your dog was a puppy, their mother was their first leader. She often used her teeth to set clear boundaries and let “Fluffy” know they were doing something wrong. I like to think of this collar as a representation of that, and use it in a very respectful way. It’s amazing how (like in this reel) with a harness and with a prong it’s like night and day. Thank you Maggie for the demonstration!
These collars are tools to communicate calmly, safely and effectively with your dog. Even small dogs can be pullers. The prong won’t hurt them like other collars can and are non-discriminatory! I have used on dogs ranging from Great Danes to mini doodle mixes.
I was anti-prong years ago. I was introduced terribly to them and told how abusive they are to dogs. After being shown how to properly use them, I realized that’s what’s important. Any tool can be dangerous without using it properly. My training approach is whatever your dog responds to best. I use a lot of positive reinforcement (treats, praise, affection) balanced with communication tools. I do not
Simple enrichment for your pup!
1. Take dish towels and roll them up (hotdog style) with your pup’s favorite treats or if feeding for meal time use their kibble.
2. Stack one towel over the other like an astrisk (*) and tie them into a ball.
3. Give to your pup for them to enjoy!
*Supervision recommended*
This mental stimulating activity keeps Peter busy for a good 25-30 minutes depending on how many towels and how tight I tie them together. He is very food driven and his tail goes non-stop during this activity.
Mental exercise is just as important for dogs as physical. This helps keep their brain healthy and is proven to help avoid cognitive dysfunctions as they get older.
Be sure to use towels you don’t mind tossing out (Dollar Tree is great for these!) as they may get shredded or torn.

What are the benefits of the “heel” command?
Maintaining heel position keeps your dog in a more relaxed, working state of mind. You are constantly in your dog’s peripheral vision which is a constant reminder that you are calling the shots. Your dog is taking direction from you rather than making their own decisions.
Once you allow your dog to forge ahead far enough that you fall out of view it tends to be a matter of “out of sight, out of mind”. Most dogs will begin to start making more choices, following less direction, and acting on their own agenda. This is where we often get pulling, leash aggression, and so forth.
Dogs do not need to heel at all times but it is a very valuable command that we recommend all dogs learn and practice it on a daily basis. Puppies especially benefit from this leadership. As they grow they are learning what is right or wrong. Providing clear rules and boundaries will set your new puppy up for success.
Toasty is an 8 week old German Shepherd who is eager to learn! We are having fun with our sessions and excited to be on this training journey with him. Welcome to the pack, Toasty! 🐾🍍💙

Link, a 5 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel practicing “heel”, auto-sit, and “bed” 👉🏾 “down” 👉🏾 “stay”.
One of the training goals for Link and his family is not jumping on people. When house guests come over, he gets very excited and starts jumping (as most puppies do). What we are training is staying on “bed” until given the release. We are starting in the backyard with little to no distractions.
The purpose of this exercise is learning that staying in bed gets him rewards. When he leaves his bed without the release, we stay neutral about it and guide him back to “bed”. We start the training out here, then will bring the exercise to inside the house to reinforce it.
He did great this session and is learning so quickly! Link is on Day 3 of his 5 day Play & Train Program.

During Coco’s training evaluation, her mom let me know Coco gets scared, pancakes to the ground, and/or tries to run back home when going for a walk around the block. While she came to stay with us we let Coco be on a long leash and go at her own pace. She was able to roam and explore the property with Peter by her side. The purpose of having Peter join us after having a proper introduction, was for her to see him and follow in his steps. He helped show her that walking around can be fun, and not as scary as she may think. For being in a completely different environment with people she had just met, she did amazing! After having her fun on a long leash, we switched to her regular leash and she heeled nicely next to me. Though there are many similarities with dog training, I do not believe it is a “one size fits all”. That’s why I try to be as creative as I can and (most importantly) have fun with it! I treat each dog as their own individual selves. #dogtraining #dogtrainer #leashskills #dogtodog #dogsocialization #santabarbaracounty #santamariacalifornia #centralcoastcalifornia #basicobedience #timiddog
Sometimes the best kind of confidence building for dogs is going through the experience WITH them. In the beginning, Anna and Carol were cautious of the water coming up the shore and would run. With the help from my boy Peter, we ran through the water together to show the girls it is a great time! By the end of the beach visit, the girls were splashing in the water all by themselves.
Training should be fun for all involved! Especially in circumstances when dogs are exposed to something different for the first time, and may be a little timid or reluctant of it. Dogs look to us as their leaders and it is our job to guide them. Here at Pineapple Pups we help you train your pup in a patient, kind, and fun way.
