🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡
celebration of death in life.
Meaning β€œoffering” in Spanish, an ofrenda is an alter created to honor loved ones who have passed away. These displays are a colorful mix of symbols, pictures, flowers, and other meaningful items and are an essential part of DΓa de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead).
🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡🏡
Pets are a very important part of a family, and an ofrenda full of pet pictures is a wonderful way to celebrate their lives. DΓa de los Mu***os β€œis a time to honor, remember, and salute our loved ones,”
β€œIn any family who loves their pets, animals are a part of the family and our lives, so an alter to remember them with more joy than sorrow… is fitting and healing.” The Beloved Pets Ofrenda is a special way to celebrate both Hispanic heritage as well as honor the connection between humans and animals and express empathy for all living things.

We invite you and encourage you to bring a photo of your fur babies so we may help them find their way back and join us as we celebrate them 🏡🐾🏡🐾🏡🐾

Pumpkin and Your Pet: What are the Benefits?
This time of year, pumpkin and the holidays go hand in hand. When I think of pumpkin, however, I think of a powerhouse of nutritional benefits β€” not only for humans, but for our furry companions as well.

Pumpkin is packed full of beta-carotene and other phytonutrients, such as lutein, flavonoids and cryptoxanthin. These natural chemicals help ward off disease and keep the body functioning properly. The bright orange fruit is also a great source of vitamins A, C, E and B, as well as minerals and fiber.

In traditional Western veterinary medicine, pumpkin is primarily used to promote digestive health. Because of the magic of fiber, pumpkin may be used to alleviate both constipation and diarrhea. In constipated pets, fiber helps draw water into the colon and soften f***s. In pets with diarrhea, fiber acts as a prebiotic, which feeds the beneficial bacteria within the colon. This beneficial bacteria keeps the absorptive lining of the colon happy and healthy and promotes normal bowel movements.

The antioxidants found in pumpkin are also beneficial when absorbed by the small intestine. Ideally, all pumpkin should be cooked or pureed for optimal absorption.

In addition to its dietary benefits, low-calorie pumpkin may also be helpful for weight management. Consider replacing a portion of your pet’s regular diet with a small amount of canned or pureed pumpkin (1/4 to 1/8 cup per 10 pounds of body weight) to promote weight loss. You may rotate in other fiber-rich vegetables or legumes, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts or black beans as well. Because of its high fiber content, pumpkin is also safe and beneficial to feed to diabetic pets.

Protein-packed pumpkin seeds in small amounts may be given as treats, but use caution β€”your pet must be large enough to pass the seeds in case they slip by unchewed. Unfortunately, that rules cats and small dogs out!

Some studies have indicated that there may also be benefit in clearing intestinal parasites using pumpkin seeds, but I do not recommend this method as the large volumes of seeds needed can create irritation and constipation.

From a traditional Eastern standpoint, pumpkin is sweet and warming to the body. In small to moderate amounts, it strengthens and tonifies digestion, meaning that it promotes the transformation of food to nutritive substances for the rest of the body.

One of the few warming fruits available, pumpkin is especially beneficial for older, weak or debilitated animals as it helps restore vigor and replenish Qi or life force. Because of its plentiful antioxidant vitamin and flavonoid compounds, pumpkin is also very good for the eyes and skin.

Many other winter squashes β€” including butternut, acorn, and spaghetti β€” are warming to the body as well. These warming foods are ideal to feed in the cooler months.

If your pet has not yet had the pleasure of a pumpkin snack, be sure to start with only small amounts. Cats may be fed one teaspoon to one tablespoon per can of food. Dogs may be fed this amount per 10 to 15 pounds of body weight.

Enjoy our cooler fall weather and feel free to enjoy the wonderful benefits of pumpkin!

The holiday is almost here! We hope everyone has a nice time with family and everyone stays safe! We see a lot of cases around this time where pets get into the trash, eat something that doesn't sit well with them, or even causes toxicity or blockages. Because of this, we recommend no people food at all just to stay on the safe side!

Contact ER as soon as possible if you suspect your pet has gotten into something. It's best to catch these type of things sooner than later. As a reminder we would be closed tomorrow Thursday November 25 like previous years.

Here are some tips on how to have a pet-safe Thanksgiving!

10/24/2021

As Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week comes to a close, let us reflect on what a veterinary technician actually is. Currently, All Valley Pet Hospital does not have any licensed veterinary technicians, but we do have one staff member who has completed the academic training and one who is currently working on that training. A Veterinary Technician is not just a nurse. They are so much more, and work on multiple species. Veterinary technicians are nurses and anesthesiologists, radiologists and dental hygienists. They are pharmacists and surgical assistants, microbiologists and phlebotomists. A Veterinary Technician needs to educate clients on proper care of their pets and they are often the person comforting a pet when they are hospitalized or set to be euthanized. These individuals do all of this for no reason other than because they love animals and wish to help them. We here at All Valley Pet Hospital appreciate all of our veterinary staff; doctors, technicians in training, assistants and receptionists.

Please call us at the first sign of possible parvo, time is of the essence. We kindly request that if your puppy may have parvo, please do not walk into our office or bring your puppy in. Call our receptionist from your car and we will come to your car to perform the parvovirus test. We will treat parvo positive puppies at the car to avoid endangering our other puppy patients that come into our hospital daily. The best way to fight parvo is to vaccinate your puppy on the schedule recommended by our veterinarians and never let your puppy on the ground outside of your own backyard until FULLY vaccinated. We never want any puppies to get sick and it breaks our hearts when this disease spreads.
