911 Legacy Dogs: We will never forget.
Over 300 dogs and their handler teams were among the many heroes on 9/11 responding to Ground Zero. This included therapy dogs, working dogs, K9 search and rescue, and veterinary teams. Today and everyday, we remember and honor the legacy of these heroes, humans and animals alike, for their brave response to 9/11. And we cherish the memory of all of those precious souls that we lost. #wewillneverforget. ♥️🇺🇸
“After 9/11, K-9 teams searched the wreckage of the crash sites for survivors and victims, and they comforted responders and the families of victims. When images of the dogs at work appeared in news coverage about the attacks, they were a bright spot during 9/11’s dark aftermath.” ~911 Memorial 🐕🦺⛑

Hot off the Santa Monica Daily Press is our “Pet of the Week!”🗞This week we spotlight 2 year old adoptable male cat, “Homie” from the Santa Monica Animal Shelter. Hailing from the streets of Santa Monica, handsome, chatty, and wise, he is bound to make you swoon! 📰 Pet of the Week Highlights:
🐈⬛ “Hi, I’m Homie! A two-year-old male cat, ID#A06329! An alley cat through and through, I earned my cred on the streets of Santa Monica. Life on the streets could be destitute at times and a fight to survive. Nights were for hunting, days were for hiding, and territory needed protecting. My battle wounds tell the tale of throwdowns with feline ferals, to which I always prevailed. Even though mine was a rough life, I’m not bitter. The hustle made me wise and never hardened my ability to be kind. One day I stumbled upon some nice folks at the Salvation Army who were so charmed by my swagger, I came to be known as their “Homie,” the warehouse cat! And so began my story with a new life with humans, leaving the streets behind….

In the News: Dog Returned to dog owner, but investigation ongoing.
Hot off the Santa Monica Daily Press 🗞 We are delighted to have been invited to offer some insight on dog behavior in the issue of animal abuse and cruelty. On April 11, a man was witnessed whipping his dog with a leash and the dog trying to get away. The video of these events went viral, leaving the community with many questions about the circumstances surrounding this incident. Read the full article: https://www.smdp.com/dog-returned-to-dog-beating-owner-but-investigation-is-ongoing/217066
From a behavior standpoint, this incident brought to light what is defined as abuse and how it should be addressed. Animal abuse is not always overt. It can be emotional neglect by ignoring your dog consistently, or not providing them with the resources to meet their needs. These circumstances can be just as emotionally and physically damaging.
As dog behaviorists, we believe that any treatment of dogs should be approached with the least intrusive and minimally aversive approach (LIMA) that is fear and force free with positive reinforcement. The latter approach will not prevent dogs from behaving inappropriately, but may cause lasting emotional effects that may inform their behavior negatively. Understanding that dogs will respond more effectively when approached in a positive and productive way, rather than forcefully, provides an alternate way to manage a dog’s behavior humanely, and offers dogs the opportunity to respond because they are motivated to, rather than because they are in pain or terrified.
Abuse of any kind is inexcusable! From online resources at Association of Professional Dog Trainers, IAABC, to behavior training programs like ours that offer virtual and in person private sessions, to group classes, there are resources available to dog owners that provide education and tools to address and resolve even some of the most severe behaviors effectively and humanely. This approach also offers the opportunity to deepen the bond with dogs through the training
