Canine Adoption and Rescue League (CARL) - a 501 (c) (3) non-profit dog rescue and NO KILL since 1996 We operate almost entirely by volunteers.

Canine Adoption and Rescue League is an IRS 501(c)(3) Private Non-Profit No-Kill Organization. We rely on donations and do not receive government, state, or city funding. Since 1996, Canine Adoption and Rescue League has rescued and placed thousands of unwanted, sick, abandoned, and homeless dogs. Dogs in our adoption program are placed in pre-screened, loving and secure homes. We make a lifetime

commitment to all of our dogs. Canine Adoption and Rescue League receives hundreds of calls from people who must find a home for a stray, a litter of puppies or even a family pet.

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY 💘 To celebrate we asked our staff and volunteers who would be their Valentine at the kennel! As you can tell our dogs are so loved, everyone had a hard time picking only one! Don’t worry though even our dogs who didn’t make the video this time (but keep an eye out for part 2!) were spoiled with lots of love this holiday. 🎉 Adoption Pupdate🎉 We are so excited to share another amazing success story just in time for Valentine’s Day 💝 Consider today to be because Wi******er (aka Winnie) has officially been adopted by his foster family 🥹 After being saved from the Downey shelter back in May of 2022 (see the last pic of Winnie from the Downey shelter), Winnie’s long journey to find his home finally found a storybook ending last week. Winnie had been bounced around between shelters and a couple of homes but we are so grateful that his past brought him here. Thank you for saving Winnie and getting him into our care! To Winnie’s mom, Vanessa, thank you from all of us at CARL for giving a home to a dog who so deserved one. He went from sleeping on concrete in loud kennels to being showered with love and raincoats (despite his objections). We like to think that there is a perfect home for every dog in our program, and Winnie’s story helps remind us of that 🐾

💕 Special Valentine’s Day Fundraiser💕

We still have a few days left for our fundraiser!

Want to send a special note to our pups? This year we wanted to donate something for our dogs waiting for their perfect companions that also showcased our supportive community! How our fundraiser works:

💝 For a minimum $5 donation you can have a personalized Doggie gram (with your name and an optional message) hung at our kennel and a special treat delivered to our pups. The Doggie grams were partially made by our friends at St. Bonnie’s High School when they were at our kennel volunteering. As we received more donations, our volunteers chipped in to decorate too!

💝 Donations can be made via Venmo, PayPal, Zelle or ApplePay (DM us for info on any of these options). Digital payment is preferred so we can have instant proof of the donation.

💝 Donations need to be made by February 12th so we have time to create our wall of love at our kennel and showcase all our donors valentines 🥰

💝 On February 14th keep an eye out for our post!

We always enjoy giving our dogs a little extra love while they wait for their homes, and we hope you’ll join us in doing so!

💝 Otis is still looking for his perfect Valentine. We asked him what he thinks his best traits are and he said:

1.) Fetch master - if you throw it he will bring it (also excellent with movie quotes that he slightly modifies aka “if you build it they will come”)

2.) Social with other dogs (male or female)

3.) Excellent snuggling companion

4.) Working on being a brave adventure companion (has become quite fond of hiking)

5.) Top notch tutor (he has references who can attest to his ability to help you learn whatever subject you are studying)

6.) Can pose for pictures with the best of them (just do not expect him to reciprocate the photo taking)

7.) Courteous house guest (he draws the line at helping clean though)

And finally….

8.) Trend setter with his fashion choices. Is open to bandanas, hiking packs, vests, you name it.

Otis has done so well when given a chance to be outside of our kennel. We know he would thrive in a foster or forever home!

🎉 Adoption pupdate🎉 It is with immense joy that we share our precious Kade was adopted by his fosters today 🥹 This sweet, sensitive soul had waited for years to find his home, and in the meantime became a favorite of both volunteers and staff. We are so grateful for Kade’s best friends, including Sandy, Marion, Marsha and Kristeen, for seeing what a special soul this boy is. They all worked on getting him acclimated to the outside world by slowly introducing him to car rides and taking him offsite to be out and about. Everything done for Kade by his friends has helped him since landing his foster home. Kade is the epitome of “if someone could just give him a chance they would see how amazing he is”. His new parents report that he continues to do well getting used to the world around him. He has a fur sister that he gets along with great, and has even made it to some local Ventura spots with outdoor seating areas where he gets to people watch and just hang out with his crew 💕 His parents saw the video we made for him a few weeks back and that’s when they reached out about meeting him. Today when doing adoption paperwork they said to us “he’s such an amazing dog we can’t believe he had to wait so long and was still here”. Kade, you are so loved and we could not be more proud of all the progress you have made 🐾 You were overlooked for so long, so enjoy your time (sharing) being the center of attention now

💕 Foster spotlight 💕 After spending almost half of his life at our kennel, Louie scored an amazing foster home a few weeks back! Here’s what his foster mom has to say about the handsome boy:

Meet Louie!! Will and I have been fostering him for about a month now. He is great with other dogs, cats and kids. No aggressions over food, toys etc. Louie is 2 years old, mixed breed (DNA test pending!) neutered and up to date on all his vaccinations. He is very sweet and loves to go on walks. If you or someone you know would be interested, please let us know!

While we are thrilled that he has found a foster, what Louie would really love is a forever home 🐾

Big thank you these hard-working students from St. Bonaventure High School who have been out at our kennel for a couple weekends helping out. They helped us dig a drainage ditch, sanitized our bathing station along all the collars and brushes and helped prep for a special Valentine’s Day fundraiser we have coming!

💕 Say hello to Lu Dog! This sweet girl is a perfect mix of darling (with her speckled coat) and loving. Lu is a little shy when first meeting new people, but a treat usually fixes that problem 😬 She is about 3 years old and is searching for a foster or forever home. Lu came from a home where she lived with dogs both big and small, cats, chickens, and kids! We hope she does not have to wait long before finding her second chance at a loving family.

🎉Adoption pupdate🎉 Hanbi, now named Gamja (which is Korean for potato), has found her forever home! Her new parents have already included in her in photo shoots, got her groomed (check out the second pic!) and even set her up with her own Instagram profile () so her admirers can keep up with her new escapades 💕 This sweet girl was displaced when her family had ti sell their home, so we are so grateful she has been able to settle in with her new family and get right back to receiving all the love she deserves. Happy tails Hanbi 🐾

Happy Valentine’s Day 💕

Another year of saving lives is in the books! Not counting dogs placed into foster, we found homes for about 55 dogs this year! The rescue world is never easy and we had some lows to go with some highs this year. We said goodbye to some beloved CARL dogs but also welcomed dogs from high kill shelters. All the tears, sweat, paw marks, slobber, dirty clothes (likely with holes in them 😬), and heartache is for the dogs and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Otis is stressed at our kennel…there is no sugarcoating it. He’s a great dog and has been offsite a few times to go on hikes, the park, the beach, etc. He has excellent manners and once he is given the chance to be away from the noisy kennel he thrives. He is sleeping sound tonight while staying with his favorite volunteer, but Otis is 100% one of those dogs that we all go “how has someone not scooped him up yet?”.
