Please join us in wishing Search Dog Ivan a very happy retirement! ๐Ÿ’•๐ŸŽ‰

Ivan was part of an accidental litter, and after being passed from home to home for the first part of his life, this toy-obsessed boy finally found himself at SDF where his intense energy and drive were not only celebratedโ€”they were the keys to his success! โœจ

In August 2014, Ivan graduated and was paired with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department Department Battalion Chief Kristi Bartlett, and together the pair achieved certification with Virginia Task Force 1 Urban Search and Rescue. Throughout their working partnership, Ivan and Kristi deployed to several disasters, including Hurricanes Irma, Maria, Idalia and most recently, Hurricane Helene, which made landfall as a Category 4 storm in September 2024. The pair also responded to the devastating 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck Haiti in August 2021, and in February 2023, the team deployed to Tรผrkiye as members of USA-1 to aid rescue efforts in the wake of the deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake and its subsequent aftershocks that struck the region. โ›‘๏ธ

Together, Ivan and Kristi have had a profound impact in their community and beyond, and we are incredibly proud of this hardworking team. We were honored to be a part of Ivan's last searchโ€”a tradition for retiring search dogsโ€”which was held on our campus and attended by family, friends, trainersโ€”even Ivan's namesake! After his successful final search, Ivan received a brand new chew toy and lots of love from his SDF family. ๐Ÿฅฐ We thank Ivan for his dedicated service, and we wish this incredible boy a wonderful and relaxing retirement! ๐Ÿซถ

Happy, happy birthday to Search Dog KODA! ๐ŸŽˆ๐ŸŽ‰ Koda was originally adopted from Lab Rescue OK, Inc., but as his owners' family grew, Koda's over-the-top energy became too much for them. Luckily, they happened to be friends with a retired Oklahoma Task Force 1 Search K9s canine handler who offered to help them find Koda a career that would suit his personality!

Koda was flown to California, but still had some maturing to do before he could join our program. A Kern County Fire Department firefighter volunteered to foster Koda in his home with his family for a few months, and before long this sweet yellow lab had stolen their hearts. โค๏ธ

When he was old enough, Koda returned to SDF's campus and upon further evaluation, was officially accepted into our training program. ๐ŸŽ‰ It didn't take long for our training team to see how much Koda had grown and matured as they watched him proudly trot off the rubble pile, a well-deserved toy in his mouth signifying a job well done. ๐Ÿ˜Œ๐Ÿ™Œ

Koda graduated from our program, and in August 2020, was partnered with veteran SDF handler Mark Schroeder, who knew from the first moment meeting him that Koda was the dog for him. ๐Ÿฅฐ Together, the team achieved certification with Nebraska Task Force One, enabling them to deploy with their task force when disasters strike. In their first year as a certified search team, Koda and Mark deployed an impressive three timesโ€”wow! We're excited to see what this team can accomplish together, and we're wishing this lovable boy a birthday as sweet as he is! ๐ŸŽ‚๐Ÿ’•

It's no secret that working dogs possess incredible skills, a fact highlighted in this KCAL News clip featuring Human Remains Detection canine search teams on the ground working in Los Angeles communities affected by the recent fires. About halfway through the video, Canine Search Specialist Chris Mackenzie and OCFA Urban Search & Rescue Team Search Team Manager Darryl Reames share some examples of these dogs' extraordinary abilities, which are critical to their mission as the search for potential victims of the fires continues. โ›‘๏ธ

Decontamination is an important part of protecting the health and safety of working dogs during a deploymentโ€”we're glad to see La County Fire Search Dogs, INC. (CA-TF2) search team Jon Munguia and Clifford prioritizing this essential routine as their work continues in the wake of the Los Angeles fires! ๐Ÿงผ๐Ÿซง

After a long day working in areas devastated by the LA wildfires, K9 Clifford and Handler Munguia take a moment for their important decontamination routine.ย  This critical step removes ash, soot, and other harmful debris Clifford encounters while searching for those still missing.

Wildfire zones can be full of toxic materials, sharp objects, and irritants, which is why decontamination is essential for protecting our K9sโ€™ health. It also gives us a chance to check for injuries and ensure theyโ€™re ready for whatever tomorrow brings.

These incredible dogs work tirelessly to help bring closure to families and communities. Keeping them safe and healthy is the least we can do in return.

SDF's Senior Director of Communications & Search Team Operations, Denise Sanders, joined FOX 12 Oregon from Northern California while training with teams from all over the country at the annual HD Search Dog Fund training event to discuss the various roles that canine search teams are playing amidst the Los Angeles fires, as well as what's being done to prepare for future disasters. Wilderness canine search teams as well as canine disaster search and rescue teams come from all over the country to train together, learning to combine and leverage their skills in order to strengthen disaster response, because we know that it is not a matter of ifโ€”but whenโ€”disaster will strike. โ›‘๏ธ

We're incredibly thankful for the dedicated first responders who are on the ground assisting rescue and recovery efforts in the wake of the catastrophic Los Angeles fires which have impacted so many. Among those shown here are canine search teams Celina Serrano & Prentiss and Jon Munguia & Clifford, who have been working since early last week when the fires began. We continue to send our gratitude to all those still working tirelessly to provide aid in this time of great need. โค๏ธ

๐Ÿ”„ REPOST Los Angeles County Fire Department USAID - US Agency for International Development: The photos you see here are of the Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) team as they respond to the current fires in the Los Angeles area and deployed for the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southern Tรผrkiye in February 2023.

When this USAR team deployed as a part of our Disaster Assistance Response Team in Tรผrkiye, we witnessed their skill and bravery as they searched for survivors. Now, we are moved by their courage battling the wildfires in their very own community. We are inspired by their service when we deploy with them overseas, and we salute them for that same dedication here at home.

PAWS ON THE GROUND - LOS ANGELES FIRES: MEET RIDGE

Ridge was recruited from the Tooele City Animal Shelter, and from the start, he blew everyone away with his unstoppable drive. When it comes to working dogs, Ridge is the complete package: thoughtful, focused, and intense when it comes to his work, yet relaxed and cuddly in his downtime!

In July 2024, Ridge was partnered with Eric Lieuwen of Sacramento County Airport Fire. Together, the pair trained diligently, and achieved certification as members of California US&R Task Force 7 just last month, in December 2024.

Ridge and Eric have now deployed to the Los Angeles area in the wake of the fires that continue to impact the region. Our thoughts are with all those who have been affected by these fires, and we offer our deepest gratitude to the many rescuers who have answered the callโ€”traveling from both near and farโ€”to help others in the midst of these tragic events. โค๏ธ

Over the past week, amid heavy winds and dry conditions, at least eight separate fires broke out in Southern California, burning more than 40,000 acres of land to date. While first responders are still working around the clock to contain the fires, search and rescue teams are on the ground in areas where the blazes have been put out, searching through scorched neighborhoods for possible victims of the fires.

KCAL News CBS News shared footage of California Task Force 3 - Urban Search & Rescue Team search teams sifting through the rubble in areas affected by the Palisades Fireโ€”now the fourth most destructive fire in California historyโ€”and spoke with Long Beach Fire Department Captain Jake Heflin about the situation. Among the teams shown searching in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood are canine disaster search teams Julie Padelford & Rampage and Caroline Upton & Tulla.

We send our many thanks to the dedicated personnel and first responders working tirelessly to fight these fires and help others, to the teams on the ground assisting rescue and recovery efforts, and to all who are contributing their time, energy, and resources to helping all those affected. We are heartbroken for those who have lost so much to these fires, and we wish safety to those still facing potential risk as fire warnings persist throughout Southern California. โ™ฅ๏ธ

Tragically, many have been displaced as a result of the Los Angeles fires, including many pets who became separated from their families as people rushed to evacuate. Animal shelters are doing what they can to help, but most are over capacity due to the influx of lost pets and injured wildlife, and they could use our help.

By adopting or fostering, you can help free up space in LA shelters so those shelters can continue taking in animals in need, and you can help lost pets reunite with their families by visiting petcolovelost.org to file a lost or found pet report. Filing a report is completely free, and could make all the difference for a displaced pet searching for their family. ๐Ÿ’œ

PAWS ON THE GROUND - LOS ANGELES FIRES: MEET LINUS

When Linus' original owners could no longer keep him, they decided to donate him to a service dog organizationโ€”Domesti-PUPSโ€”rather than surrender him to a shelter. However, the Domesti-Pups team soon realized that Linus' intensely energetic personality would be better suited for a more active career. They reached out to SDF, and upon seeing his dogged determination and drive, we knew Linus would be a great fit for our search program!

Linus is intelligent, attentive, and incredibly athleticโ€”he's a powerhouse when it comes to his work, but best of all, this affectionate boy has a ton of heart and gives his all both on and off the rubble. In September 2022, Linus graduated and was partnered with Patrick Easton of the Sacramento Fire Department, and together, the pair achieved certification as members of California US&R Task Force 7.

Linus and Patrick have now deployed to the Los Angeles fires to assist with rescue efforts where needed. Our hearts go out to all those impacted by these devastating fires, and we send our immense thanks to all the rescuers who are working tirelessly to aid those in need. โค๏ธ

Our friends at CARDA - California Rescue Dog Association have deployed several Human Remains Detection canine teams to join in the search for possible victims of the Los Angeles fires. Tragically, it has been confirmed that these fires have claimed several lives, and we offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of those lost. โ™ฅ๏ธ

Our gratitude goes out to all the teams on the ground assisting with recovery efforts in the wake of this tragedyโ€”the task at hand is certainly not an easy one, but this crucial work will provide much-needed closure to victims' loved ones, paving a path to healing as impacted communities begin to rebuild. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

PAWS ON THE GROUND - LOS ANGELES FIRES: MEET REVA

Reva was initially raised in an apartment, but her size and energy levels soon outgrew the small space. Her owners decided to surrender her to Outreach Pawsabilities Inc. in Utah, where she was discovered by an SDF recruiter. The recruiter knew Reva would be a strong candidate for our program when she nearly knocked him over trying to get the toy he was holdingโ€”just the kind of drive we're looking for!

Reva was flown to SDF's campus by volunteer pilots, and here, she mastered the skills she would need to become the highly trained search dog she is today! In December 2021, Reva graduated and was paired with San Francisco Fire Department Assistant Deputy Chief Garreth Miller, and together they achieved certification with California Task Force 3 - Urban Search & Rescue Team. In October 2024, the team deployed to Hurricane Milton to aid citizens in need in the aftermath of the storm.

Reva and Garreth have now deployed to the Los Angeles fires to provide assistance as rescue and recovery efforts continue in the midst of these tragic events. We continue to keep the affected communities in our thoughts during this difficult time, and we send our gratitude to all the rescuers, both two- and four-legged, working to help those affected by the fires. โค๏ธ

PAWS ON THE GROUND - LOS ANGELES FIRES: MEET BOSCO

Bosco initially started training as a service dog by Dogs for Better Lives (DBL), but his rambunctious personality wasn't ideal for that line of work. Luckily, high-energy dogs are just our typeโ€”Bosco was evaluated for search dog potential, and passed the assessment with flying colors!

Here, Bosco impressed trainers with his dogged determination, focus, and intensity while searching for his missing person. Upon graduating, he was partnered with San Francisco Fire Department firefighter Joshua Davis, and together, they achieved certification as members of California Task Force 3 - Urban Search & Rescue Team, enabling them to deploy with their task force when disaster strikes. In October 2024, the team put their skills to the test when they deployed to Hurricane Milton to aid citizens in the aftermath of the storm.

Bosco and Joshua have now deployed to the Los Angeles fires to assist rescue efforts in the wake of the fires affecting the area. As we continue to hold in our thoughts the communities impacted by these devastating fires, we send our gratitude to all the rescuers, both two- and four-legged, working around the clock to help those in need. โค๏ธ

PAWS ON THE GROUND - LOS ANGELES FIRES: MEET CLIFFORD

Clifford was donated to SDF by Kolfyre Labs in Wyoming, and he quickly won the hearts of our team, impressing trainers with his thoughtful approach to instruction. His desire to hunt is off the chartsโ€”he will hunt all day if you let himโ€”and he confidently tackles any search problem put in front of him.

In April 2022, Clifford graduated as a human remains detection dog and was paired with Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighter Jon Munguia. The team achieved certification with La County Fire Search Dogs, INC. (CA-TF2) in March 2023, and that same year, the team deployed to Hawaii in the aftermath of the tragic Maui wildfires. In June 2024, they responded to the New Mexico wildfires that afflicted the state, and later that year deployed to Hurricane Helene to provide assistance in the aftermath of the storm.

Clifford and Jon have now deployed to the Los Angeles area to assist recovery efforts amidst the devastating fires that continue to burn throughout the region. We hold all those affected by these fires in our thoughts, and we send our deepest thanks to the many rescuers who have answered the call to help others in the midst of this tragic event. โค๏ธ
