Feeding raw meat or raw fish to cats and dogs can be dangerous for several reasons:
1. Bacterial Contamination
Raw meat and fish often contain harmful bacteria like Salmonella, E. coli, and Listeria, which can cause severe infections in pets and humans handling their food.
Even if your pet appears fine, they can shed bacteria in their f***s and saliva, putting other animals and people at risk.
2. Parasites
Raw meat and fish may contain parasites like Toxoplasma, Trichinella, and tapeworms, which can cause serious health problems in pets.
3. Nutritional Imbalance
A raw diet often lacks essential nutrients, like calcium, phosphorus, and taurine (for cats), leading to deficiencies that can cause severe health issues.
4. Thiamine Deficiency from Raw Fish
Raw fish contains an enzyme called thiaminase, which breaks down vitamin B1 (thiamine). A thiamine deficiency can lead to neurological issues, weakness, and even seizures.
5. Bone Hazards
Raw bones can splinter and cause choking, intestinal blockages, or internal injuries.
6. Increased Risk for Immunocompromised Pets & People
Older pets, puppies, kittens, and immunocompromised pets are at higher risk of serious infections from raw food.
Handling raw meat improperly can also put humans at risk, especially children, elderly individuals, or those with weakened immune systems.
Safer Alternatives?
If you prefer a raw diet, consider commercially prepared raw diets that are properly balanced and tested for safety. Cooking meat lightly (without harmful seasonings) can also eliminate many risks while maintaining nutritional value.
