One of the most difficult things about being a barn owner (and horse owner) is when a horse passes away. The salvation is when you feel that gentle soul leave the earthly body.

Giddy up! The Pony Express Re-ride is about to start in THREE Days!

How can I see the Pony Express Re-ride in person?

As the riders make their way from St. Joseph, Missouri to Sacramento, California, there are scheduled exchanges where the riders will hand off the mochila and a new rider will continue the delivery. The ride takes place 24 hours a day so some of these happen in the middle of the night!

Though the schedule is subject to change, here are the some of the places that you can watch an exchange or see the riders ride by (during daylight hours!): go.nps.gov/ReRideSchedule

(Note: the event takes place 24 hours a day and there are countless places to see the riders. These locations were selected based on the time of day and enrichment opportunities for the public. For a list of complete locations: nationalponyexpress.org)

Folks - we need you. The poor little c**t that was slowly tortured to death by the owners dog and the other horses that died of neglect must not be ignored by our authorities. Please read Betsy Bruenos letter of appeal and MEET US AT THE HEARING this next Friday. For details .... Please share!
"Good Morning Everyone,

So I wanted to give everyone an UPDATE on the Horse / Dog Case. He is officially going by Lorenzo MARTINEZ in this horse case, with an AKA: Salcedo attached. Case # 1033813.

I went to court a few weeks ago when the DA Mills attempted to get the remaining horse off the property. Well the Judge agreed and ordered the horse to be given away or sold . He does have to provide the court to whom he gave or sold the horse too, but as we all know that doesn't mean much. Its probably at a friend or relatives house. But at least its not at his home. I did ask Brian Whipple from Animal Control that when the address is provided to the Court would he go do a welfare check, he told me we would talk about it. So we shall see on that.

NEXT COURT DATE: So the next court date is next week Friday June 7th, 8:30am Courtroom #4. This is called a settlement hearing. This means his attorney and the DA will talk and possibly come up with a Plea Bargin or Agreed upon settlement to present to the judge. If not agreed upon, this will be set for Trial. Talking with DA Mills she told me yesterday no agreements have been made as of yet and she doesn't think they will be. Now of course, something could come up last minute, but at this time we go back in front of the Judge June 7th. Personally , I want to go to trial. I want to tell the whole story in detail. As hard as this would be, I want a Jury to hear and see the pictures. The last court day to take the remaining horse, the defense attorney ranted about how he is a good horse owner and this is all a mistake and a horrible accident only. He said the horse was very old and just fell down and hit the fence. It took everything in my power to stay in my chair and not scream out.

I want to show power next Thursday in court. I need bodies to show up. Grab a family member, friend, neighbor, bum on the street, we want to fill that courtroom. Im asking anyone who shows up wear something western type. Cowboy hat, Western shirt or t-shirt with a horse on it, etc. We want to stand out as a group and to show we are one.

Please email or call me to let me know if you can come, RSVP ( LOL ). We will be meeting at the Courtroom #4 upstairs between 8 - 8:30am in the hallway. Don't want to be caught up at the security check point to walk up together. I want to be outside the courtroom door so the DA Mills see us.
Thanks Betsy

On Tuesday, May 14th, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors received a final report of the social and economic impact of the proposed measure from several departments including the Economic Development Board, UCCE Sonoma, Agriculture Weights and Measures, and Permit Sonoma. Following this report and public comment, the Board reluctantly voted to place the measure on the November ballot as Measure J. The Board also unanimously and enthusiastically voted to take a formal stance of opposition to this measure.

What can we do now?

The first step to helping our fight against this measure is to sign up to get involved. Visit our site to sign up, select how you would like to participate, and stay tuned for details as the campaign progresses. https://www.sonomacountyfamilyfarmersalliance.com/getinvolved

We are very encouraged by the overwhelming request for signs we have received. However, please note that strict campaign laws determine when we are allowed to begin putting up campaign-related signs. By signing up and letting us know you are interested in signs, you will be the first to know when they are available which will help us get them up ASAP within the allowed window.

How does land development affect hay availability for horses? In the article, “No Hay for Horses?” (http://elcr.org/no-hay-for-the-horses/) discusses how land use changes can affect both hay availability and cost. As productive acreage is lost forage will need to be trucked from further away, increasing the cost for the horse owner.

Failing to plan is planning to fail - particularly when it comes to facility design for horses.

Planning your facility design and layout can have a big impact on space and property use, management needs, and even horse health and well-being.

Follow these basic suggestions when thinking about your facility this spring:
1) If well-managed pasture is intended to be the primary/only source of forage, a stocking rate of 1 horse per 2 acres is commonly suggested.
2) A centrally located dry lot or sacrifice area including a water source and shelter can provide immense benefit in protecting your pastures during times of extreme weather.
3) Laneways connecting your dry lot, pastures, and other commonly used spaces can make moving horses and equipment easier.
4) Splitting pastures and allowing a proper rest period (21-30 days) between grazing events can improve grass health.

If you need help with pasture design or facility layout, please contact your local Extension agent!
