Meet Baylor: A 4yr old Gordon Setter, 70lb approximately. Very sweet/happy boy but as a working breed needs a job. Needs someone who has the time to work on training and help him fulfill his need to hunt and explore.

He’s not a huge cuddle bug, but I’m sure if he had enough fulfillment in the day he would be more than happy to relax at night with you.

Good with kids, good with dogs smaller than him.

He has boarded with me multiple times and I have found he does not like dogs who are bigger than him.

Not a huge player would rather sniff and chase birds
Crate trained
Recently neutered (March 2024) and had a lump removed on his hip
UTD on everything
Walks on a gentle leader
Knows basic commands
Loves to train

Sweet sweet personality: owner is rehoming because their lifestyle does not give him the fulfillment he needs to thrive.

Baylor needs someone who is experienced with this breed and or a working breed dog.

**Let’s Talk Off-Leash Dogs!**

1. If your dog doesn’t have a reliable recall, put it on a leash.
2. I don’t care if your dog is friendly.

My packs are friendly, but I won’t allow an off-leash dog to enter our pack uninvited. This could cause me to lose the trust of my pack. I am here to be a leader and ensure their safety, and I will do ANYTHING to protect them!

So, what should you do when an off-leash dog approaches? In the past two weeks, we’ve encountered off-leash dogs twice.

My dogs always walk behind me, never out in front, so I can be a barrier for any approaching dog, person, or child. I lead the pack to protect them if necessary.

When an off-leash dog approaches, I stop and call out to the owner. If the owner cannot recall their dog, I get loud and assertive to scare the dog off. Usually, the dog will slow down when it sees the pack. I shuffle my feet and make a “chhhhh” sound to deter the dog from approaching.

Throughout this, I keep my pack calm and behind me. I do not let my pack engage because IT IS NOT THEIR JOB!

If that doesn’t work, I use my compressed air can (pictured above) and spray toward the ground. The air can chased off both off-leash dogs these last two times. It is not mace or anything harmful. It is simply compressed air that makes a “CHHH” sound, usually startling the off-leash dog enough to make it go away or run back to its owner.

In my 10 years as a pack walker, I have had only one dog enter the pack, and it was a puppy that was not a threat.

It is my job to protect the dogs in my care, and I am not afraid to use any means necessary to do that. These dogs trust me, and letting a “friendly” dog disrupt us is a huge no in my book.

It’s Not the Tool, It’s the Human Using It

100% true: the effectiveness and safety of any training tool depend on the handler’s knowledge and skills.

**Pinch Collars:** Can be harsh and harmful if not used correctly.
**E-Collars:** Risk of injury if the dog isn’t properly trained.
**Harnesses:** Can cause damage if fitted or used improperly.
**Gentle Leaders:** Can cause harm if not applied correctly.
**Flat Collar:** Can cause damage

Every tool has its purpose and can be beneficial when used with proper training and understanding. However, misuse can lead to problems.

In my pack walk program, I use slip leads. Some might say, “OMG, you could strangle a dog,” or “It will cause tracheal issues.” These concerns are valid, but only if the tool is used incorrectly.

Here’s why I choose Mountain Dog slip leads:

1. **Safety:** Ensures dogs can’t slip out and run away.
2. **Control:** Applies even pressure all around, making it easy to manage the dog. Plus, they can be converted into a gentle leader if needed. Also allows for more control when placed on the neck properly.
3. **Training:** Dogs learn to understand leash pressure. I train them not to pull or hang on the leash, maintaining control without discomfort.

A remarkable feature of these leads is their eco-friendliness—they’re made from recycled mountain climbing rope. I can comfortably manage 12 leashes in one hand, which speaks to their efficiency and design.

Supporting Mountain Dog means supporting a fantastic small business that aligns with my values.

Let’s remember: the key to any tool is proper training and usage.

Dogs have different needs and requirements, just like people.

I am not bashing large scale corporate daycares. Let’s get that out of the way. I am simply saying not all dogs do well when put in a situation with 20+ dogs they don’t know.
Dogs like routine, they like structure, they like knowing what to expect.

When you put them in an environment where things change drastically daily, and they have to rebuild bonds with new dogs everyday they get stuck in a tunnel where growth can take a long time, or they revert to fear.

Some dogs get so overwhelmed that their fight or flight is in overdrive and they can never truly relax. Yes they come home tired from all the mental stimulation and running around. But that’s overstimulated exhaustion. Not true fulfillment.

Some dogs do amazing in large daycares, they have fun, they make friends and they thrive.

Some dogs need more structure, one person, and familiarity. They do better knowing what to expect, what dogs they will see and they build bonds with one another.

Each daycare has its pros and cons it’s up to you to listen to your dog and know what is best for them!

🐾✨ Sometimes, our dogs’ behavior problems aren’t our fault….

Genetics and their parents can play a role, and sometimes, management is our only option.

Sometimes, our dogs simply have unique personalities.

After all, they’re not robots or humans; they process everything differently. 🐶

Does how we guide, lead, and expose them to new things when young play a role? Yes. But sometimes, you could do everything right and still end up with a dog who needs special management or guidelines because that’s just their nature.

Dogs can inherit traits from their parents just like they inherit color and size. You can’t change, fix, or train it out of them! It’s genetics/DNA or instinct, something out of your control. And it’s okay! 🧬

All we can do is manage. Not set them up for failure, accept their unique qualities, be more aware, and guide them to make the right decisions.

That’s where we as humans come in because we can adapt and change more quickly. We can manage environments and situations better, and we have control in many ways to help our dogs live happily without hindering their nature. 🌟

Dogs always accept us for who we are, no matter if we are rich or poor, happy or sad. The least we can do is accept their true selves! ❤️

🐕 If it’s a behavior problem that can be worked on and fixed or overcome for the betterment of your dog, always choose training and helping. 🐾

🐕 If it’s something you’ve tried to fix or help them work through to no avail, don’t beat yourself up. Do what you can to help your dog stay happy and comfortable. 🐾

Management is better than nothing. Remember, every dog deserves love and acceptance for their individuality! 🐾💕

🐾PACK WALKERS SUMMIT 2024🚨

I am terrified...yes 😱
Am I going to do it anyway...also yes 🙌

Some of you know I hate talking on social media, I hate giving speeches, I hate being put on the spot cuz that’s when my brain decides to just check out completely and I basically forget my name 😂

BUT when it comes to talking about something I have a strong desire for, or something I have personally experienced and gone through, and my trial and error or my journey could help someone else in the industry or in life, I’m happy to grow a pair and talk about it 💪

This summit is compiled with the best in the industry and it’s only going to grow. Being able to have open conversations, hear stories, find guidance, and learn for FREE is a special opportunity 🆓✨

I’m so honored to be a part of it and I’m so excited to watch, listen, and learn from some of the amazing pack walkers I have followed for years! 🐾💖

Pack walks were controversial when I first started…

and they still are. Many believe they’re dangerous, unwise, and offer no benefits. Some even think we do it just to make a quick buck or because we’re lazy.

Here’s the deal…

Pack walking, like many activities, can be risky if done incorrectly. Yes, there are those who do it for the wrong reasons, but most of us do it because it’s a zen-like experience for both humans and dogs when done right.

Here’s why we love pack walks:
- They help nervous dogs gain confidence in a controlled environment.
- They teach leash manners.
- They tap into a dog’s natural instinct to be in a pack.
- They create structure, rules, and boundaries during walks.
- They teach dogs to ignore distractions and work as a team.

Pack walks are not just strolls around the block. They’re work. They’re focused and controlled.

Yes, the fears about pack walks, like loose dogs, fights, and injuries, are valid. But these can also happen on a solo walk, because most big fears are beyond our control (like a loose dog).

BUT—an experienced, professional pack walker knows how to handle these situations. They don’t panic or cause chaos. They lead!

As I always say, pack walking is not for every dog or every person. But for those of us who do it for the betterment of the dogs and their humans, we do it because we love it, see its value, and treat it as a passion, not just a job.

I resonate so much with this… credit goes to Marie Feazell.

The more I grow, the more I embrace “Let Them” in my life and relationships. Even family can mistreat and disrespect you.

It took me a long time to learn this. I used to tolerate a lot because I didn’t want to lose people. But if they were truly my people, they wouldn’t treat me like that. Don’t be so understanding and forgiving that you overlook repeated disrespect.

Let them be upset.
Let them judge you.
Let them misunderstand you.
Let them gossip about you.
Let them ignore you.
Let them be “right.”
Let them doubt you.
Let them not like you.
Let them not speak to you.
Let them drag your name through the mud.
Let them make you out to be the villain.
Whatever people want to say about you, let them! Kindly step aside and LET THEM.

The hard truth is they know they’re hurting you. They just don’t care. They did it knowing it could cost them you, and they did it anyway. People who love you care about your feelings.

Let them go.

Some people would rather lose you than admit their wrongs. Let them go.

The lack of respect was the closure. The lack of apology was the closure. The lack of care was the closure. The lack of accountability was the closure. The lack of honesty was the closure. Let them go.

Stop sitting at tables where you’re the topic as soon as you leave. Let them go.

You can still be kind and love them deeply, but do it from the distance they created with their words and actions. Access to you is a privilege they’ve proven they can’t be trusted with. Let them go.

You don’t need to tell your side of the story. God already knows. Let God fight the battle for you. Let them go.

Getting here took me sleepless nights, countless tears, and managing emotions like anger, disappointment, confusion, and deep hurt. Lots of self-reflection, self-preservation, deep prayer, and seeking wisdom from those wiser than me.

If you’re struggling with this, you’re not alone. We may never understand why hurt people hurt people. But we can grow ourselves, because healed people heal people.

Don’t let them steal your joy.
Don’t let them steal your light.
Don’t let them steal your peace.
You control that.

🚨 New dog alert 🚨

Introducing George, the newest member of our pack!

🐾 At just 10 months old, this English Lab is a bundle of joy and energy.

🐾 George comes to me with a solid foundation laid by her mom. Her upbringing has instilled in her the values of obedience, love, and companionship. Now, it’s my turn to build upon that foundation and help her reach her full potential.

💪 She radiates positivity and enthusiasm, making her a joy to be around. But with that energy comes the need for guidance and structure. That’s where my pack comes in.

🐕‍🦺We’re not just a group of dogs; we’re a community that supports and nurtures each other. George’s pack mates have already welcomed her with open paws, eager to show her the ropes and teach her the importance of proper play and behavior.

🐾 My mission goes beyond just playtime. I am committed to helping George channel her energy into productive outlets, preparing her for a life of success in various environments.

So excited to have George join us, I can’t wait to see what the future brings!

You want your dog to recall…

then give them something worth recalling for

Everyone wants an off leash dog, or just a dog who listens but they don’t want to sacrifice the main reason they got a dog. Love and affection.

I get it, the aggressive cuddles, the constant support of your dog always needing you.

But what about in an emergency, what about if it could save your dogs life. What if in the end you could have both?

Your dog craves love and affection just as much as you, after all dogs are opportunist. If they can get it they will.

What if I told you your love and affection, and your attention is worth more to your dog than a squirrel, another dog, a cat, or a steak? Don’t believe me?

Try this: ONLY giving your dog attention when you call their name. Try only giving your dog attention when they do something you like. Make your love and affection a reward to your dog.

If you back off on love an affection and only offer it to your dog when you really need them to listen it will become the most valuable tool you have.

Think of it this way, your dog craves attention from you, if you don’t give it out freely, when the time comes to get it, like when you call their name. They’re 10 times more likely to choose you over the other stimulus.

But it only works if you have the will power to hold back the free love.

Can you do it?

If so it will change you and your dog’s relationship for the better.

Dogs aren’t just pets; they’re mirrors reflecting our personalities.

They observe, learn, and bond emotionally with us, adopting our energy and demeanor.

Whether you’re high-energy or laid-back, your dog tunes into your vibe. When it comes to training, it’s less about the dog and more about you.

To see change in your dog, it’s often you who needs to change.

🐾 Take a moment to self-reflect.

🐶 Become attuned to your actions and feelings.

🦴 Cultivate a positive environment for your dog.

🐕 Practice emotional regulation and adapt your behavior.

It’s a journey, not without its challenges, but worth considering.

Before blaming your dog for unwanted behaviors, look within yourself.

The change starts with you

Are you tired of misinterpreting your dog’s emotions based on human behaviors?

🐶 It’s time to debunk the myth of equating panting with happiness. Just because your dog isn’t panting with its tongue out doesn’t mean it’s sad or scared.

Let’s ditch the habit of anthropomorphizing our dogs and start understanding them as the unique beings they are.

Dogs express themselves differently, and that’s perfectly okay. A happy dog comes in various forms, from the panting pup to the one with closed mouth and soft eyes.

Don’t be fooled by appearances; happiness isn’t always loud and boisterous. Sometimes, it’s the serene demeanor, the relaxed ears, and the calm body language that signify contentment.

It’s time to stop the cycle of misinterpretation.

Instead of projecting our human emotions onto our dogs, let’s appreciate them for who they are: dogs.

They don’t need to be neurotic or hyperactive to be happy; most find joy in tranquility and peace.

So, next time you catch yourself assuming your dog’s emotions, take a step back and observe. Learn to recognize their cues and gestures, and embrace the beauty of their unique expressions of happiness.

After all, understanding our dogs starts with respecting their nature and acknowledging their emotions on their terms.

🐾Pushy vs. Friendly Behavior in Dogs

🐶 Do you often hear yourself saying, “My dog is friendly” or “My dog loves to play”? While these statements may hold truth, there’s a crucial distinction that many owners overlook – the difference between friendly and pushy behavior in dogs.

🦴 Being friendly doesn’t always equate to respectful behavior towards other dogs. A pushy dog may exhibit a persistent disregard for boundaries, incessantly prodding other dogs to engage in play until tensions rise. And when conflicts arise, it’s easy to blame the other dog, but the reality is far from that.

❤️ Pushy behavior in dogs stems from a lack of understanding of social cues and boundaries. These dogs often fail to heed corrections from other dogs and perpetually seek engagement without considering the other’s cues to disengage.

🐾 Unless your dog responds appropriately to corrections, intervention becomes necessary. Recognizing whether your dog falls under the category of friendly or pushy demands a keen eye for body language and understanding of appropriate play dynamics.

👀 Observing the body language of both your dog and others is paramount. Is the other dog attempting to communicate discomfort or disinterest through subtle cues? Are they taking brief breaks, signaling fatigue, or attempting to evade interaction altogether?

🚨 Pushy behavior isn’t a catastrophic issue, but it necessitates heightened vigilance. Being attuned to how other dogs respond enables you to discern when it’s time to intervene and provide your dog with a much-needed break from social interactions.

DIRT!

Ever noticed how pets just can’t resist getting dirty? Yep, it’s a common sight! But you know what? That dirt represents something more than just a messy fur coat. It symbolizes freedom, joy, and the sheer pleasure of living in the moment.

Think about it. Our furry friends lead relatively predictable lives at home. But when they step out, it’s like they’re entering a whole new world—a world where every corner, every puddle, every patch of grass is an adventure waiting to happen. They get to run, play, roll, splash—basically, revel in every sensory delight nature has to offer.

Now, as a dog business, I’ve seen it all. And let me tell you, it’s not always easy dealing with muddy paws and tangled fur. But you know what? I wouldn’t have it any other way. With every scrub and every rinse, I’m not just cleaning up dirt; I’m preserving memories. I’m ensuring that when they go home, they don’t carry the physical remnants of their adventures; they carry the spirit of those moments—the laughter, the excitement, the sheer happiness of being alive.

Sure, my clients might not expect me to go the extra mile. And truth be told, most of them probably wouldn’t even notice if I sent their pets home with a bit of dirt still clinging to their fur. But for me, it’s not about meeting expectations; it’s about exceeding them. It’s about making a difference—not just in the lives of the pets I care for, but in the lives of their owners too.

Because let’s face it: life is messy. It’s unpredictable, chaotic, and often downright challenging. But amidst all the chaos, there’s beauty. There’s joy. And sometimes, all it takes is a little extra effort—a little extra care—to bring that beauty to light.

Routine & Consistency are key:

In my dog business, I’ve found that dogs, much like myself, thrive on routine.

Consistency is the linchpin.

I prioritize understanding each dog’s unique needs, a task made challenging by constant introductions to new pack members. Which is why you don’t see a fast rotation of new dogs coming in.

The magic happens when a dog is comfortable, confident, and familiar with the routine.

This familiarity allows me to address specific needs and work on areas where they may be lacking.

Meeting dogs twice a week on set days creates a united pack, eliminating the need for introductions – I already know they fit seamlessly.

As a pack, we capitalize on routine, familiarity, and consistency to tackle broader goals and challenges.

This shared experience fosters a balanced pack dynamic.

Like a classroom, once the initial unfamiliarity fades, we learn, explore, and conquer new objectives together. It’s not just about learning; it’s about thriving collectively and facing bigger challenges as a united front.

🐾 Training a well-behaved dog extends beyond the simplicity of “a tired dog is a good dog...”

While fatigue can temper exuberance, true canine discipline involves consistent conditioning. Establish rules, standards, and boundaries for behavior, no matter the energy levels. Enforce these guidelines consistently, teaching your dog that good behavior is a constant requirement.

Dependence on a tired dog for good behavior can create a cycle of escalating exercise needs. More activity leads to increased stamina, requiring more to achieve the same well-behaved result. This inadvertently turns your dog into an athlete.

Consider the challenges when external factors limit exercise, like bad weather. A high-energy dog without an outlet can become disruptive, causing stress for both the dog and the human.

The key is instilling good behavior as a standard, independent of your dog’s activity level. Teach your dog to relax and behave on lazy days, blending into your lifestyle.

Dogs are adaptable and willing learners; it requires your commitment to teaching them.

A well-behaved dog isn’t just an exhausted one. It’s a product of consistent training and a harmonious owner-canine relationship.

01/23/2024

Sibling syndrome, or littermate dependency, is a genuine concern that’s becoming more prevalent, likely due to shelters facing overwhelming numbers.

Unfortunately, some agencies permit adopting two siblings unethically.

Dogs raised together from the same litter often develop problematic behaviors like attachment to each other, an inability to bond with others, separation anxiety, and even aggression or anxiety.

These behaviors can manifest differently in each sibling, with one being more outgoing and the other shy and anxious.

These issues can escalate as they age, causing long-term problems.

However, it’s possible to have two dogs from the same litter with proper care, including solo adventures and individual bonding time.

While not every pair will develop these behaviors, the risk is extremely high.

These risk can even happen to two dogs who are not siblings, that are raised in the same household. Although your two dogs may be bonded. Their behaviors may not present as extreme.

If considering two young puppies, it’s advisable to get them from separate litters and with at least a 6-month age difference.

Ethical breeders and rescues usually avoid adopting out siblings due to the potential risks.

It’s essential to remember that every situation and dog are unique. This insight is based on personal experiences, and your situation may vary. Always consult with professionals for guidance tailored to your specific circumstances.

Find a mentor/trainer who tells you want you need to hear. Not what you want to hear….

F**k yes! I've always sought mentors who don't sugarcoat, who challenge me to push boundaries rather than coddle through comfort zones.

People-pleasing was once my forte, especially in my line of work. However, my evolution over the years aimed for honesty, openness, and transparency with clients.

It's about speaking up when needed, even if it stings a bit.

I’m not everyone's cup of tea, and that's perfectly fine.

Prioritizing honesty has been my mantra.

Clients, like dogs, thrive on genuine guidance.

Growth, happiness, and thriving—those are the goals.

My commitment to seeing clients and their dogs reach new heights is unwavering.

Sometimes, delivering hard truths is the catalyst for realizing the bigger picture.

I cherish what I do, embracing the journey, honesty, and the occasional uncomfortable conversation.

It's all part of the recipe for growth and fulfillment.

Here's to loving what you do and staying true to the path! Cheers to 2024

Our Story

It started with a dream and it turned into a passion-driven reality. It all started when I had to board my dogs while I went away on vacation. I must have looked at 6 different kennels and just didn’t seem to find one that matched all of my requirements. The one big thing that none of them had was lots of human interaction. So thats why Bark N Barrel was born. I wanted to create a place where the dogs felt loved by not only other dogs but by people too. A place where instead of my dog running around like a maniac all day, they learned and thrived and progressively got better over time. I wanted a place where my dog felt at home and was surrounded by somewhat familiar things. Sadly a place like that just didn’t exist. So I created it. I have created an environment that gives your dog both mental and physical exercise, along with plenty of socialization with well balanced, temperament tested dogs. We help you create a personalized goal plan for you and your dog. So, you can have a worry-free day or vacation knowing that your dog is getting lots of human interaction, socialization, and training, but most of all lots of love and cuddles that they deserve, because they're already missing you. We believe in couches not kennels, queen beds instead of crates, and comfy dog movie nights snuggled up on the couch. We don't have overcrowded play yards, we have a 2-acre private fenced in field for your dog to play on with their friends, freshwater kiddy pools, and a home environment that only Bark N Barrel Dogs have access too. We don't make you log in to a web cam to check-in on your dog, we text or email you daily with pictures and videos to show you how much fun your pup is having. If that’s not enough, we’re always just a call or text away. Here at Bark N Barrel we believe that every dog is more than just a pet, they're family. That’s why we go above and beyond to make them feel like they're a part of our family. So when you think of a dog care provider we want you to think of Bark N Barrel because we’re just your friendly neighborhood BNB for all things dog!
