1. Leash pressure and recalls
2. Drop leash and recalls
3. Off leash freedom

If you want better recalls, make it fun and rewarding to come back to you!

You should be taking a break every 10-15 minutes to keep your pup engaged and learning! Especially when working on new or difficult behaviors.
Because adult dogs only have a maximum attention span of about 20 minutes.
Push much longer than that and your dog will start to disengage and get frustrated.

EVERYTHING ELSE IS LEARNED.
The secret sauce is caring about the dog in front of you. That's it.
Anyone who LOVES dogs can become a really good dog trainer.
Because everything else is just knowledge and practice.
So the ONLY thing stopping you from becoming the trainer/handler your dog needs you to be is you.

This is a video with the actual audio of Riley doing NOTHING.
It took a few minutes for him to settle, but this is all we're doing for the next couple hours.
We've already gone for a walk, worked on engagement and recalls, and he's had an Ugly Chew to help him wind down.
So now it's time to relax.
I'm at my desk working, and I have my foot on his leash. He can't leave, pace, or scavenge for something to chew on, so he does the only option left: he sleeps.
It's so incredibly simple, but it's one of the BEST things you can do for your dog.
Because THIS is how you get a dog who knows how to CHILL. And that's all most people want.

Don't reward demanding behaviors, but DO use what they want as a reward.
A few minutes prior to this she was cutting me off and jumping on me to demand attention.
But demanding behavior tells you exactly what your dog wants!
Which means you know how to reward them.

MOVE when you give your treat!
And practice a TON.
As long as your pup is having fun & engaging, you're making progress 👌

He gets to do this after every session, especially when he's my helper!
Because working (whether training or helping me train someone else) inevitably leads to some stress. Even when he's enjoying himself!
And this is how I make sure he recovers from that stress.
Spending some time wandering and sniffing not only lowers his heart rate, but it also helps him shake off any lingering tension.
And that keeps him happy, healthy, and willing to participate in training.
If your dog is struggling with training, or winding down after activities, take a moment to help them decompress! Slow down and let them sniff and explore. It can make all the difference!

A frustrated dog will always struggle more than a fulfilled one.
And if you have a reactive dog, they're already struggling on walks.
Make their life (and yours) easier by providing an outlet for their frustration BEFORE your walk.
For Gus, that usually looks like this: a couple minutes on the treadmill to burn off some steam. Because sometimes he just needs to RUN, and there's no way I can keep up.
If you notice your dog getting overly excited or frustrated before your walk, try giving them an outlet for that energy before you walk. It could make all the difference!

There's nothing wrong with this dog. She's just not getting what she needs.
She's so sweet, and affectionate, and eager to please... But she's also very frustrated.
And you can see this frustration when she jumps. She NEEDS an outlet for her energy! So I don't try to punish the jumping, because that's not the problem. And as long as she's not putting her paws on me, she can keep doing it.
The problem is that she needs more exercise, mental stimulation, affection, and play.
And if I can make sure she gets these things, this jumping will just go away. No fancy training needed.
