Just a reminder that Canine Distemper is endemic in our rural counties. It's often carried by raccoons, skunks, foxes and coyotes. Be sure to keep your pet up to date on their annual vaccines, and if you have any questions about exposure - a booster shot will not hurt them. And because we know this question is coming - dogs have their own form of Coronavirus - this is NOT Covid they are talking about in this article!

A recent test conducted on a dog at Hood County Animal Control confirmed a positive diagnosis of distemper, coronavirus, and bordetella. In response to these findings, we are implementing precautionary measures to close both intake and outtake for dogs for the next thirty days, as recommended by DSHS and local veterinarians. This period will allow us to closely monitor the situation and take necessary actions to ensure the safety of all animals.

During this time, we will quarantine the dogs currently residing at the shelter and conduct a thorough disinfection of the facility. Distemper is a highly contagious viral disease, and we are committed to containing its spread to protect both the animals in our care and those in the community.

This situation emphasizes the importance of keeping pets up to date on their vaccinations. Canine distemper is a serious viral disease that can have severe health consequences for dogs, but it is entirely preventable through timely vaccination. We strongly urge all pet owners to consult with their veterinarians to ensure their dogs receive the necessary immunizations on schedule. By prioritizing the health and vaccination of our pets, we not only protect them from potentially fatal diseases but also contribute to the overall well-being of our communities. Preventing outbreaks like canine distemper is a shared responsibility, and safeguarding our animals at home is one of the most effective measures we can take to ensure a healthy environment for all.

We appreciate your understanding and support as we navigate this challenging situation. Our priority is the health and safety of the animals, and we are dedicated to overcoming this hurdle. Thank you for your continued support.
