Fall is officially in full swing! Now is the time to crack down on housing, nutrition, and preventative health strategies suitable for the arrival of winter.
The graphic below lists some essential items on the horse owner's fall to-do checklist, but there is much more that needs to be done—like having your horse rugs repaired and waterproofed; securing and storing hay properly; assessing your shelters for safety and soundness; etc.)
Your equine veterinarian is one of your greatest allies this season: be sure to give them a call soon to discuss vaccination and deworming protocols appropriate for your horse’s situation; use this opportunity to chat about recommended changes in nutrition and exercise program as well!
We are currently offering new services at BAHC! Dr. Nathalie Gravel💕 specializes in human chiropractic but is also trained and certified to offer these services to our patients of any size! She is compassionate, and patient enough to handle any situation or patient, small or large. Chiropractic adjustments have many benefits. Some of these benefits include a more non-invasive treatment, improved health and mobility, AND a one-on-one treatment that is designed to target your animal's needs. Let's get your animal living a happier healthy life!🐶🐱🐴❤️🩹

Mosquitos have been worse this year. There have been several cases across NM of westnile in horses. So be observant of your horses and take care to not have standing water where mosquitos breed. Please give us a call if you see any suspicious signs so we can get your horse or horses tested.
Summer and fall are prime time for arbovirus infection as these diseases (which include Eastern Equine Encephalitis [EEE], West Nile Virus [WNV], Western Equine Encephalitis [WEE] and Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis [VEE]) are transmitted by many different species of mosquitoes and biting insects.
With more states reporting cases of West Nile Virus (70 cases were reported in August alone), here is your reminder that keeping all horses up to date on vaccinations with the guidance of your veterinarian is the best protection you can offer your equine friends.
Read more and download the arbovirus factsheet on the Equine Disease Communication Center's website at https://tinyurl.com/ukaa3zwv

Hot summer weather puts horses at risk not only for dehydration and heat stress but also the skin damage and discomfort that accompany a sunburn— just like humans.
Equestrians love some chrome on a horse but we need to remember that those beautiful white patches and the non-pigmented pink skin underneath are more likely to suffer from sunburn, especially in areas where the skin is more sensitive — like around the eyes and the nostrils. In addition to the pain and discomfort, horses that are prone to recurrent sunburn may also face other long-term consequences, like the increased likelihood of developing squamous cell carcinoma (a common cancer).
If your horse is susceptible to sunburn, contact your veterinarian for more information about sun damage and recommendations to keep your horse protected this summer.
More information about sunburn and photosensitization is available on our website at https://aaep.org/issue/sunburn-photosensitivity
This is good information for when you adopt a new pet. Give them a chance and understand the transition they are going through. Give them a lot of love and patience.

California has recently reported its first-time incursion of vesicular stomatitis (VSV) in over 50 years. Since the start of the outbreak in May, 77 VSV-affected premises have been identified (29 confirmed positive, 48 suspect).
Vesicular stomatitis is a viral disease of horses, donkeys, mules, cattle, swine and New World camelids that occurs in the Western Hemisphere. The disease is named for the characteristic vesicular lesions it causes in the form of blisters, crusts and ulceration of the lips, muzzle, nose, tongue, ears, sheath, teats, and/or coronary band. The virus is transmitted by biting midges and therefore is seasonal.
Because VSV is not a common occurrence in most areas every year, reports of Vesicular Stomatitis in the media often raise questions among livestock and horse owners. Visit the Disease Communication Center's website to learn more about VSV and to find updates on current disease outbreaks: https://www.equinediseasecc.org/vesicular-stomatitis
As always, your horse doctor remains your best source of information and resources. By working closely with your equine veterinarian you can develop strategies to reduce the likelihood of a Vesicular Stomatitis outbreak at your facility or to minimize the effects should one occur.

Happy Memorial Day! Enjoy the day and remember those that served and are no longer with us. Also, make sure your pets are safe by not allowing them to get any of these toxic foods.
Planning a BBQ or picnic this Memorial Day weekend? Remember to keep your pets safe & away from the human food! Many favorite foods are actually toxic to pets which is why you should remind any guests to resist those puppy eyes & refrain from feeding your pets. See the graphic to learn more!
Good information. Beware of heat stroke in your animals.

It’s easy to understand why bringing a pet to run errands is tempting. But leaving them in a hot car for just 10 minutes can result in up to a 13-degree temperature hike! If you’re ever in doubt about whether it’s too hot for them, it’s usually best to leave them at home. Courtesy of bit.ly link . . #PetSafety
