Thought I’d drop a line to all those home blackberry growers.
It’s time to do your final pruning and pinning up from the winter winds. Prune out any dead or damages canes, lateral and sublaterals. Prune back any small whips. They’re not going to produce, just sap the plants.
March is also time to fertilize. Leaf buds should start showing up with warmer weather. Blooms will follow - depending on weather of course. Usually in April. It’s about 40 days from blooms to berries.
Just remember we usually get a real cold snap in March/ April. If in bloom they can survive down to 28*. Below that it kills the bloom bud. ☹️You ‘may’ get a secondary bloom later-maybe.
Happy harvests. ☺️
If anyone needs some branch locks to fasten you canes up I have a ton that need to go to new homes, they’re used but FREE. Just text me.
