Pets sometimes munch on things they shouldn’t—like whole rib bones. This sweet dog, Kumo, gulped down what he thought was the ultimate treat before his pet parents could intervene. We quickly took x-rays to find the bone's location, and Kumo was transferred to an ER vet for emergency surgery that night. Quick action and diagnostic testing were crucial in saving Kumo's life. If your pet gets into something they shouldn't, time is critical. We're here for you when you need us.

Pet parents often ask, "What happens during my pet’s examination at UrgentVet?" Great question!
A veterinarian physical exam is a complete checkup to make sure your pet is in tip-top shape! The vet carefully examines key areas, like your pet's eyes, ears, nose, mouth, and teeth, looking for any signs of infection or illness. They’ll listen to the heart and lungs, check the skin and coat for parasites or any unusual changes, and gently feel the abdomen to make sure everything’s in order internally. The vet also checks joints and muscles to identify any pain or stiffness. Finally, if needed, a neurological exam is conducted for pets showing any signs of neurological conditions. This thorough approach helps catch any health issues early, keeping your pet happy and healthy for the long run.

The holiday season is always full of surprises and touching stories, but this particular one warmed the hearts of our team. This past Thanksgiving, Jenn, a Girl Scout Troop Leader and one of her Girl Scouts, Anita, entered our clinic with a feral cat. Anita had been caring for this furry friend, who had made her neighborhood its home for the past three years. One evening, she called Jenn desperately seeking help after she discovered that her furry friend had been attacked and was near death.

Jenn sprang into action, bringing Anita and Ember into UrgentVet Cary, NC. She was prepared to have the difficult conversation with Anita, explaining that the cat might not survive the attack. Thanks to the UrgentVet Cary team, Ember is almost fully recovered! Jenn reports that Anita has been doing an amazing job looking after him and his wound as he continues to recover at her house.

Anita was prepared to sacrifice all the money her mom had saved for her Christmas presents to save Ember’s life. While Jenn had the resources to help, and our team had the means to save Ember, we knew this story didn’t end there.

The team at UrgentVet Cary was so touched by Anita’s dedication this animal in-need, that they rewarded her with a $300 gift card. We hope she continues to nurture her love for animals, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing things Anita will do in the future!

While you’re prepping for tomorrow’s feast, keep these tips in mind to keep your furry family safe:
🍗 Watch the menu. Avoid sharing turkey bones, rich foods, or anything with onions, garlic, or spices.
🧺 Secure the trash. Curious noses can find harmful leftovers.
🍫 Skip the sweets. Chocolate, xylitol, and raisins are toxic to pets.

Halloween is tomorrow! 👻 Before the fun starts, let’s make sure your pets stay safe:
🍬 Hide the candy - Chocolate and sugar-free treats can be toxic, so keep them far from curious noses.
🕯️ Skip the candles - Battery-operated lights are a safer bet around wagging tails.
🚪 Calm the chaos - If your pet gets nervous with all the doorbell ringing, set them up in a quiet room with their favorite toy.
🦴 Keep costumes comfy - If your pet's not into dressing up, a festive collar works just as well!

This adventurous kitty ran out of the house and came back with a fish hook stuck in his paw. His owner rushed him to UrgentVet, where we carefully removed the hook and made sure he was comfortable.

This little chicken tender came to see us after a not so nice neighborhood dog took a little too much interest in him. This didn't stop sweet Lambeau from making friends with us here at Urgentvet Sarasota. After some pain medicine, a little wound cleaning and a whole lotta cuddles with an emotional support teddy bear, Lambeau went home with some pain medicine and antibiotics. From puffy and not feeling too hot, to ready to go home to mom and dad! This cutie came to see us for pretty serious allergic reaction after getting vaccines a few hours earlier. After giving her some medicine in her IV catheter we monitored for swelling to go down. She was back to wagging her tail once her medicine started working and her face got less puffy! Allergic reactions can be scary. If your pet is experiencing hives, facial swelling, vomiting or anything out of the ordinary after something new, it's best to get them seen by a veterinarian. If you're not sure, call us! We want your furry family to be okay, and you to have peace of mind 😊 #allergicreaction #puppylife #sarasotaveterinarians #petfirstclientfirst
