Very innovative!!! When all else fails improvise!

Happy Saturday, kids. So, I'd like to give a giant shout out to the folks at Bellevue Animal Hospital for their above and beyond creativity in fashioning an indestructible and yet comfortable improvised cone for a dog who could not be stopped. Garrison, who we talked about a week or two ago, is healing from a severe leg infection/lick granuloma that he would not leave alone. We all rapidly realized there was not a cone in existence that could keep this Great Dane away from the leg.

Enter the 5 gallon Home Depot bucket. With the addition of some zip ties, a drill and some padding, the Garrison-proof cone was born. We salute you for saving this dog's leg and for the excellent deployment of a Home Depot bucket in a way even I never dreamed was possible.

A side view is in the pics.

PS Lest anyone freak out and worry, he absolutely can eat, drink and breathe with this on without an issue.

Why Santa doesn't use CATS.

12/10/2022

Christmas tree water is toxic to cats. Please don’t let your cat drink the water.

Increasingly, companies are marketing various chemical enhancements that can keep your trees alive longer, but are toxic to cats. Beyond added chemicals, it turns out all Christmas water is toxic to cats because of fire retardants that are sprayed onto most Christmas trees before they are sold. Also, pine sap is toxic to kittens.

How do you keep cats from drinking Christmas tree water? Try wrapping aluminum foil over the bowl of water so your pets can't reach it. You can also spray a lemon or orange scent around the tree, especially at the base, to discourage pets from drinking water or climbing onto the tree. Cats (and dogs) generally don't like citrus smells.

⚠️WARNING WHEN FREEZING TREAT TOYS

Please ensure that if you are stuffing treat toys and freezing them for your pets to help keep them cool, dont forget to ensure there is a HOLE ALL OF THE WAY THROUGH IT.

WHY YOU MAY ASK ?

Toys such as Kongs have 2 holes in their toys for a reason - TO PREVENT SUCTION.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT ?

When your pet licks at the contents of the toy or squeezes it in its mouth, their tongue can get SUCKED into the hole and get STUCK on the dogs tongue and cause horrific injuries to the point where the animal can actually die.

Having 2 HOLES in the toy PREVENTS this from happening.

So if you STUFF your toys with treats, push a straw through it to ensure the 2 HOLES ARE NOT BLOCKED.

If you are going to FREEZE the toy, do so with the straw in place and then REMOVE the straw before giving it to your pet.

So when buying your pet toys, please keep this in mind.

Hope this little tip helps you keep your animals safe!

It’s that time of year late April and May we get calls about a spot that looks like this one on their dog. Many people think this is an indication your dog has Lyme or ringworm. The answer is NO. This is a bite reaction from a pesky gnat or mayfly. Dogs do not get a red ring like humans do with Lyme and ringworm does not appear like this on a dog. So if you see a single ring like this do not panic, it should go away in about a week.

Here is another example of a deadly plant available at Lowes this weekend. This is a Sago Palm. Ingestion of ANY part of this by dogs or cats is toxic and often results in liver failure and death. The seeds are the most toxic part.

If you have pets, do NOT buy this plant. I really wish there was signage by these warning pet owners of their toxicity.

Making Carriers Cat Friendly

All too often, TEAM gets a call from an exasperated—sometimes bloodied—person who has to cancel a cat’s appointment at the last minute for this frustrating reason: “I can’t get him in the carrier.”

As anyone who has tried to force a resistant cat into a carrier knows, even the sweetest pet can become a frenzied bundle of teeth and claws! But being able to transport your cat in a carrier is critical to his health and well-being. Here are some tips to make it easier for you, your cat, and the veterinary staff who has to handle your pet on arrival!

1. Get the carrier out a week before you plan to use it, not the night or morning before, and put it where the cat can see it, smell it, and play in it so that it’s no big deal (it doesn’t hurt to do this once in a while anyway);
2. Give him his favorite treat or some catnip in the carrier so he gets a reward by going in and out;
3. Lightly spray the carrier and the area around it with a cat-pheromone spray, like Feliway, which has a calming effect;
4. On the day of transport, once the cat is inside, cover the carrier on three side with a towel or sheet to reduce visual stimuli;
5. Spray the pheromone in the car (and/or on whatever you use to line the carrier);
6. If you play music, keep it soft and soothing;
7. Keep calm, and keep quiet—no cajoling or “baby talk” (experts say high-pitched talking, like loud music, makes cats anxious). Your cat will pick up on your mellow mood.

P.S. The best time to get your cat used to the carrier (and even some short car rides) is when he is a kitten and everything is still fun.
