But do horses need eye protection from the eclipse?
The experts at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine say it simply:
“The simple answer is no. Unlike humans, animals aren’t overly fascinated with the phenomenon of the eclipse and won’t be inclined to stare at the sun for the sake of watching the eclipse. They instinctually don’t look at the sun because it hurts their eyes!”

JT International, the parent company of Tough1, is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana, and if you’re a Hoosier, you’ve been hearing a lot of talk about the total solar eclipse occurring on April 8, with a good portion of the state in the “Path of Totality.”

Did you know we no longer recommend bran mashes? Read below for reasons why!

During these cold winter days you may be thinking about offering bran mashes to your horse as a warm, comforting treat and also as a way to help prevent colic due to the higher fiber content of bran. This, however, is an outdated concept and nutritionists point out several potential problems associated with feeding bran mash too often—namely, an imbalance of the dietary calcium-phosphorus ratio that could lead to bone disorders, and a disruption of the healthy fermentation patterns in the horse’s intestinal tract.

The best way to help your horse stay warm this winter is by increasing forage 🌾 and providing shelter 🏠 during a cold snap. And as far as the risk of colic, your first line of defense is to provide plenty of water to keep your horse hydrated. 💦

As always, your equine veterinarian remains your best source of information; contact them to learn more about feeding mashes (they are typically not an issue if fed as the occasional treat) and colic prevention this winter.

New Year's is coming, and with that comes celebration! This often includes fireworks or gunfire. Many horses are terrified of the loud noises and bright flashes and may panic, injure themselves or escape. As horse owners, we have a responsibility to keep our horses safe and comfortable during New Year's eve celebrations. If your horses need sedation, NOW is the time to pick up Dorm Gel. Here are some tips to help you prepare:

- Find out when and where fireworks will be happening near you. Check Facebook, neighbors and with event organizers to get the details.
- Plan ahead and decide where your horse will be during the fireworks. Some horses may prefer to stay in their familiar stable, while others may feel more secure in a field with their herd mates. Make sure the area is safe, secure, and free of hazards.
- Consider using a sedative for your horse if they are very nervous or have a history of reacting badly to fireworks. You can get a prescription from us for dorm gel, which is easy to administer and can help calm your horse down. Always follow the instructions and dosage carefully.
- Provide your horse with plenty of hay, water, and toys to keep them occupied and distracted. You can also play some soothing music or white noise to mask the sound of the fireworks.
- Stay with your horse if possible, or ask someone you trust to look after them. Your presence can reassure your horse and help them cope better. However, do not put yourself or others at risk if your horse becomes dangerous or uncontrollable.
- Remain calm and confident around your horse. They can sense your emotions and will react accordingly. Do not punish or scold your horse for being scared, as this will only make them more stressed. Fireworks may be fun for some people, but they can be very stressful for horses. By following these tips, you can help your horse have a safer and happier new year's eve.

Dr Buchanan recently examined a horse that has had a jaw abscess for two months, and had been cared for by the owners as if it was a summer sore. They called us out when the wound continued to drain after weeks of unsuccessful care. She noticed that the wound was associated with the jaw, and was firm, going up towards the teeth. Dr. Buchanan sedated the horse and used a speculum to open its mouth. There was a small scar under the tongue close to the swelling. She took some x-rays, and with the help of her patient (see pictures below), they found a foreign body in the jaw, presumably into the tongue that looked like a piece of wire. She used forceps surgically to pull out the wire, which was about 10 cm long. The doctor cleaned the wound and gave the horse antibiotics and painkillers. The owner was advised to monitor the horse's appetite and temperature and to contact Sarasota Equine if there were any signs of infection or discomfort. The owner was relieved that the cause of the abscess was found and removed, and the horse is healing up great!

We all want the best for our horses, and that includes their hoof health. That's why we emphasize the importance of working together with veterinarians and farriers to prevent and treat two common hoof problems: Laminitis and White Line Disease. Here you can see a patient that recently had white line disease resected after xrays and farrier care.🐎

Did you know that white line disease is a sneaky condition that affects the inner layer of the hoof and can affect your horse's hooves and cause serious problems? The hoof wall separates and gets infected by bacteria or fungi. It can be caused by many things, like wet conditions, inconsistent trimming, or poor hoof conformation. The most common cause in our patients is metabolic disease, which often leads to laminitis. This can make your horse lame and damage the bone and other structures inside the hoof. 😢

But don't worry, we are here to help! The sooner we act, the better. That's why horse owners need to keep in touch with your veterinarians and farriers, who can help us prevent, diagnose, and treat laminitis effectively. Our veterinarians can diagnose via radiographs and work with expert farriers to treat laminitis and white line disease with special trimming, resection, and shoeing techniques. Our patients benefit from the combined knowledge and skills of veterinarians and farriers. They are the experts in equine podiatry, and they collaborate to provide the best care possible for our four-legged friends. They will remove the infected hoof wall and protect the healthy part with the best shoes for your horse.

At Sarasota Equine, we work with your farrier as a team. We aim to provide comprehensive care that tackles not only the symptoms but also the root causes of hoof problems, ensuring your horses enjoy a happy and healthy life. We want to give your horses the best podiatry care possible. Let's learn and share more about hoof health. Share your stories, ask questions, and help each other with information. Together, we can make sure every horse has a chance for optimal hoof (and whole horse) health.

Sarasota Equine Veterinary Services is expanding! We are hiring a hybrid position of a veterinary technician that can also work in the office when not needed by the vet.

The Job

Our veterinary technicians are the extra set of hands everyone wishes they had! The doctor is relying on your help to hold our patients, stock medications in their mobile clinics, help bill for services, and overall keep the job running safely and smoothly. This job requires you to be self-motivated, take initiative, and thrive in fast paced environments. Our ideal candidate is someone willing to pick up any and all tasks to help the team thrive while also contributing to our positive workplace culture.

We are looking for an individual with strong horse sense and impeccable people skills.
It is essential in this position that you possess a strong Equine foundation and are comfortable handling horses. Horse people speak a certain language, and you need to be able to communicate clearly. This includes basic horse anatomy (knowing the difference between the hocks and the withers), movements, mannerisms, and things like that. If you grew up with horses, have worked in a barn, have shown horses for ten years, etc… that’s what we’re looking for! If you love horses but haven’t spent much time handling them, this may not be the best fit for you.

When you are not in the field with our horse clientele, we need a candidate who is willing to learn all aspects of the office work which keeps this practice rolling. An important part of this job is managing stress. When the schedule is slammed, calls are rolling in, a doctor needs a favor and a client has a question, you must be able to take it all in stride, then competently address each task with a positive and professional demeanor for both your team and our clients. Each employee is part of the face and voice of Sarasota Equine, and that’s a big deal to us.

Please email a cover letter and resume to [email protected] for review.

She can also design customized exercise and recovery programs for your horse based on its individual needs and goals. Whether your horse is a casual rider, a competitive athlete, or a senior companion, Dr. Buchanan and the team at Sarasota Equine can help you keep it happy, healthy, and fit for life!
