🐢 Monty escaped and decided to come all the way around the house, up the sidewalk to the front door, and even knocked twice with his shell. Quite the shock looking out the glass to see who was there.

🐢 He was out less than 10 minutes and received a wagon ride back to the tortoise pen.

Hope all of our fellow Floridians are safe from Hurricane Ian. Our tortoises are all doing well. We lost part of an oak tree and some bamboo in their pasture and some standing water, but no issues with the fencing.
Our fruit farm, had much more damage that will take longer to cleanup.
Our post office is closed due to power being down and road closures. I will ship out seed and plant orders as soon as things are running again.

Update on the bed our daughters put together and filled which is in the area where our Sulcata tortoises reside.
🐢Seeds were planted a couple of weeks ago and are thriving without watering or irrigation. Grateful for rainy season in Florida. Lots of pumpkins, Malabar spinach, and Lagos spinach. The tortoises have already been reaching up and nibbling the hanging growth.

Removed the terminal male bud from some of the fruiting bananas today. The sulcatas love eating them. Left behind the sweetheart (fhia3) because there will still make flowers being enjoyed by the bees, the Mysore because sometimes a few more hands will form after lots of male flowers form on the rachis, and the mystery bananas because the male buds were too high for me to reach. We have banana plants available for purchase (pickup only).

Monty and Sherman enjoying a snack here at our farm. One of our daughters made costumes for our two old guys using items from the recycle bin. Small pumpkins make a great enrichment item to place in their enclosure. We sell several varieties of organic pumpkin seeds. If you live in south Florida, we have found pumpkins to grow best when planted around this time of year.

Today, on Tortoise Island.... Tropical Storm Hermine reduced the Sulcata enclosure to one small island.
