Do you have your tickets for ARC’s annual All Aboard for Animals event at Sarasota Yacht Club on March 15? It promises to be a fun evening for all, with food, wine, music and dancing! Every guest will receive a bag of dog treats and a tennis ball, courtesy of local pet supply store DOGPerfect, who also donated the basket for the winner of the Most Nautical dog costume contest.

Local artist Tim Jaeger, painter, whose works adorn the walls at ARC, has donated a commissioned pet portrait for our popular live auction at the event.

The current forecast for March 15 shows sunny, warm weather, and there is always an amazing view of the Sarasota skyline, the moored boats and the beautiful water. The deadline for tickets to this dog-friendly event is this coming Monday, March 10, and can be purchased at https://tinyurl.com/yswsm89n. Plan to join us…we would love to see you there!

Our Ready Set Rescue! spotlight this week is on Bessie, a friendly, happy Terrier mix girl from Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch. Bessie has been waiting far too long for her forever home, simply because she wants to be your only furry family member!

Bessie is 5 yrs old, has had formal training, knows basic commands, and is housebroken. She is a favorite among the HSLWR volunteers, who take her on outings and host her on sleepovers. They say she has perfect manners, and loves the humans (including children) that she meets. Buy her a Pup Cup and she will be your friend forever!

If you are looking for a dog that loves playing with toys, hiking or just going out for a stroll, Bessie may be the girl for you. Check her out at https://hslwr.org/post/Bessie.

It’s Friday, and time for our weekly roundup of the pets seen at ARC this week. We always enjoy sharing our adorable patients with you. Some came from our rescue partners, and others were private patients. Some were spayed or neutered, and others received vaccines and preventatives at a Wellness Clinic. Wherever they came from, our dedicated, skilled staff gave them the best care possible.

Rescues served this week were Underdog Rescue of Florida, Tender Heart Charities Inc, Sarasota County Animal Service, Love4Paws, Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch, Howling Hounds Sanctuary Rescue, Nate's Honor Animal Rescue Center, Eio Rescue Ranch,Rescue Garage, Underdog Rescue of Florida, and Satchels Last Resort Animal Shelter/Sanctuary

Veterinary care for our pets is just as important as medical care for humans. Rescues are always low on funds, and many people can’t afford private vet services. But ARC’s affordable prices make it possible for everyone to give their pets the care that will help them live a long, happy life.

We could not continue to offer these valuable services without the help of our donors and supporters. If you would like to help fund our work, visit our website at https://www.arcsrq.org/services

Throughout February we have given you reasons to Beat the Heat and spay or neuter your animals. Improvements in behavior are also a good reason to get that surgery scheduled.

We all know dogs who mount people, objects, and other animals, and there is little that is more embarrassing than your dog hu***ng your guests! A home that smells like urine might be a close second, if your dog or cat is spraying or marking territory. Neutering and spaying greatly decreases territorial behavior, reduces the sexual need to mount, and reduces the incidence of dog bites. In almost 85 percent of cases, the dogs responsible for fatal attacks on humans were unaltered males with high levels of testosterone. Neutering prevents the animal from producing testosterone.

February may be almost over, but the need for spaying and neutering your furry friends continues. Make an appointment today!

Beat the Heat Month, also known as Spay/Neuter Awareness Month, is observed every February. Earlier this month, we posted about the health benefits, but there are other reasons to spay and neuter your dog or cat.

Dogs and cats should never be free-roaming, but many intact males become escape artists when there are females in heat in the neighborhood. When they are running free, the chances of road accidents are greatly increased, and surveys have shown that as many as 85% of dogs that have been hit by a car are intact. And the desire to escape is not limited to males; females in heat do this as well. While dogs and cats are running free, they are also susceptible to being attacked by other animals and contracting diseases.

We all want our pets to stay safe. Spaying and neutering can help, so make that appointment this month!

Yesterday we posted about dog vaccination, but cats can also be vaccinated at ARC! The kitties get three vaccines: rabies, FeLV and FVRCP. The rabies vaccine is required by law, of course. FeLV is Feline Leukemia Virus, a common retrovirus that can be spread easily to other cats, is a common cause of feline cancer. FVRCP is a combination vaccine to protect against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Feline Calicivirus, and Feline Panleukopenia.

Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis is a feline herpesvirus which causes recurrent respiratory infections. Feline Calicivirus is another that impacts the respiratory system. Feline Panleukopenia causes damage to the bone marrow, lymph nodes, and the lining of your cat's intestines. It is the cat version of distemper in dogs.

Although many people believe that indoor cats do not need FeLV or FVRCP because they are not exposed to other cats, these viruses can survive for up to a year on surfaces, so even a short escape to the world outside your door can be risky for an unvaccinated cat.

If you are interested in making an appointment for vaccinations at one of our Wellness Clinics, please follow our page for news on the next clinic.

Did you know that ARC offers vaccines for your furry friends at our Wellness Clinics? The American Animal Hospital Association recommends different vaccines for cats and dogs, and ARC offers the basic, or “core” vaccines, for dogs. The bordetella vaccine is also highly recommended for dogs who socialize with other dogs, especially at dog parks, groomers and boarding kennels.

The core vaccines are rabies (required by law), a combination shot for distemper, parvovirus, and adenovirus (hepatitis), and the leptospirosis vaccine. While the other illnesses are not transmissible to humans, both rabies and leptospirosis are.

Puppies as well as any recently acquired pup should be vaccinated unless you have been given proof of vaccination when you got the dog. And if you can’t remember when your older dog last saw a veterinarian, it’s probably time for his vaccines as well. Follow our recommendations for timing on booster shots.

If you are interested in making an appointment at one of our Wellness Clinics, please watch our posts for news on the next clinic.

Yesterday we talked about microchipping, which is a great way to help you get your pet back if he is ever stolen. But a microchip doesn’t prevent your pet from being stolen. Although some cats are stolen, the typical victim of a pet theft is a dog, particularly purebreds or small, easily grabbed dogs. There are several common reasons that dogs are stolen. Sometimes people want to make a quick buck, so they steal a dog to resell on Craigslist, or to breed (especially purebreds). Worst of all, some dogs are sold to dogfighting rings to be used as bait.

So what can you do to help ensure that your dog is not stolen? First, never leave your dog unattended outside your home, even in a fenced yard. Especially if you have a small, friendly dog, they can be stolen from your yard in seconds. If you wouldn’t leave a toddler alone, don’t leave your dog.

If you go to dog parks, keep your eyes on your dog at all times. All too often, pet guardians are engrossed in their phones or chatting with other people rather than watching their dog. And when you walk with your dog, keep him on-leash. An unleashed dog is an easy target for someone with a tasty treat.

There are other options, such as GPS trackers, that you might want to consider, too. Never forget that dogs are generally inquisitive, trusting beings; they rely on you to keep them safe.

Is your dog or cat microchipped? If not, why not?

Microchipping is one of the best ways to ensure that your pet is returned to you if he is ever lost or stolen. Although there are different brands of microchips, all are tiny electronic, permanent forms of identification that contain a unique ID number that can be read by a small, portable universal scanner. Online, you link that number to your own information on a microchip registry, and if your dog or cat is found by a stranger or an animal shelter, a simple phone call can start the reunification process.

About the size of a grain of rice, a microchip is placed in the loose skin between the shoulder blades, in a quick procedure that is similar to a vaccination. It is not a GPS system, so you can’t keep track of your pet’s location, and it is not a substitute for external identification on a collar or harness. But unlike GPS systems, which require routine charging, and ID tags, which can come off, the chip is always there and needs no recharge.

ARC offers microchipping during surgery as well as in our Wellness Clinics. And almost every private vet office does, too.

The entire month of February is Beat The Heat Month! We aren’t talking about the weather, but about spaying and neutering your pets.

More than 6 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year. While many are adopted or returned to their families, almost a million of those animals are euthanized in those shelters every year. Did you know that spaying one female cat can prevent up to 5,000 unwanted kittens in 7 years? And spaying one female dog can prevent up to 500 unwanted puppies.

No one wants dogs and cats to die because there simply aren’t enough homes for them. Don’t put it off any longer. Show your love for your pet; make an appointment and get your female dog or cat spayed this month!
