We had the privilege of cooking with some 2 Cajuns Smoked Sausage last night. If you're looking for a new processor in the local area look no further. They offer multiple flavors but the original Cajun was a BIG hit for our family!

Though sikas are termed as ‘deer’, they are actually a member of the ‘elk’ family.

Wood duck Wednesday

Bringing a whole new meaning to floating shelves.

Every so often we get the opportunity to work on something really unique for our customers. A few months ago, a young man and his mother brought in a mottled drake along with a few spent shells and an old box asking for them to be included with the duck as they had belonged to the man's grandfather and it was his grandfather that had taken him hunting in the mangroves. The original drake was supposed to be flying but unfortunately had a bad wing and I reached out to the customers and asked them to trust me and let me pose him swimming. They loved the drake so much that his mother brought the hen in secret to be added to the display. We were finally able to surprise them with the finished look this past week and are happy to say they love it as much as we do.

It's Caturday again 🐈

Bobcats mostly eat rabbits and hares. They may also eat rodents, such as squirrels and mice, or hunt small deer, snakes, lizards and domestic animals, such as dogs, cats, sheep, goats and poultry. About 95% of bobcats brought into our shop were found in a chicken coop.

Getting to mount drakes and hens together is always a pleasure. These two red heads were both very mature. The drake had a spectacular purple flash that his photo doesn't do justice to

We find all sorts of things inside the animals brought to us.
This lesser scaup (aka blue bill) was brought in with a large soft lump on its head. After skinning it turned out to be a fluid filled cyst that was eating away at the muscle in his head!
Despite the lump we are still very pleased with how he came together.

Happy wood duck Wednesday!

Reptiles are known for healing broken bones much slower than warm blooded animals. This guy clearly broke his jaw while he was young and though it healed in an odd shape he still lived long enough to grow over 10 ft long. His unique jaw shape is what prompted the customer to get it cleaned by our busy beetles.

Antler, Fur, And Feather is proud to announce the addition of a new trailer. We can now pick up and deliver animals of any size. This is already coming in handy as we load up mounts to take with us to Arkansas.

This gorgeous redhead was taken by our favorite waterfowl regular Patrick Grazawski . Patrick will be heading with us to Arkansas for our own duck hunt this week and while both taxidermist will be gone from 1/12 till 1/16, we can still be reached by phone and/or direct message through our social media pages. If you need to drop off an animal while we are away we will do our best to arrange a time and date for you.

More cackling geese today. This was a really fun project and I was so happy with the results

Redhead ducks are among just a handful of ducks that lack a metallic speculum but anyone who's had the pleasure of seeing one close up could never call them plain.

Despite looking similar to Canada geese, the smaller cackling goose can be split into 5 different subspecies with slightly varying plumage. You may notice the goose in the second photo has a neck ring but the first does not.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! 🦃 This year we are hoping to be thankful for big bucks like this one when we go into the woods next week. The taxidermists are going hunting and will be out of the shop for 5 days starting Tues but you can still reach us by phone for drop offs and pickups.

How many lives does a bobcat have?
The average lifespan of the bobcat is seven years but rarely exceeds 10 years. The oldest wild bobcat on record was 16 years old, and the oldest captive bobcat lived to be 32.

The process of banding, or “ringing” as it’s known in places other than the United States, dates back to 218 B.C. Historical records indicate Roman officers in the Punic Wars tied threads around the legs of birds that acted as messages to fellow soldiers. European royalty used the practice to indicate ownership of falcons. In 1595, a ringed peregrine that escaped King Henry IV’s home in France was spotted some 1,350 miles away in Malta just 24 hours later.

The North American Cobra Chicken (aka Canada goose) is know for being aggressive both on and off breeding and nesting grounds. One documented case involved a male defending his nest from a brant that wandered into the area; the following attack lasted for one hour until the death of the brant. The cause of death was suffocation or drowning in mud as a direct result of the Canada goose's pecking the head of the brant into the mud. Researchers attributed it to high hormone levels and the brant's inability to leave the nesting area.
This goose was taken right here in FL by Patrick Grazawski.
