🌿Our after-school explorers are diving deep into the rhythms of nature at Pitney Meadows Community Farm!
🌳Our after-school Nurtured in Nature program brings young explorers together to connect with the natural world in a truly unique way. Over the course of eight weeks, students dive into the rhythm of the seasons right here at Pitney Meadows Community Farm, alternating between hands-on science explorations and mindful discoveries. Led by Leah (Lanci) & Andrew Ferrone, nature champions are setting up trail cameras to uncover the hidden wildlife on the farm, to creating vibrant nature rainbows and practicing mindful listening, each session adds a new layer of wonder and learning.
🌱Designed for K-5 learners of all abilities, our program fosters curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and overall well-being. Every activity is in sync with the changing seasons and the beautiful landscapes of our living classroom. Nurtured in Nature isn’t just a program—it’s a journey that encourages deeper connections with the environment and each other.
🌻With the generous support of Deborah and Dexter Senft, we’re able to offer this incredible opportunity to our community's children, sparking a lifelong love for nature and discovery.
🌱 In honor of Hunger Action Month, we’re shining a spotlight on the impactful ways Pitney Meadows is tackling food insecurity in our community - and how you can help. 💚Consider making a gift today to help us continue this invaluable work. https://www.pitneymeadowscommunityfarm.org/gift
📈 With rising food bank usage, escalating prices, and marginalized communities disproportionately affected, the local food system plays a vital role in long-term health, economic opportunity, and educational success. At Pitney Meadows, we’re addressing this through these key programs:
🥕 Produce Donations and Cooking Classes: Working with over 15 community partners, we donate over 90,000 servings of fresh produce annually, paired with hands-on cooking classes taught by local chefs.
🏥 Nutrition Rx Program: In partnership with Saratoga Community Health Center, this program provides patients facing food insecurity with fresh, nutrient-rich produce and the knowledge to use it in healthful ways.
🪴 Sovereign Gardens Initiative: We empower community organizations to create their own sustainable food production through plant starts and gardening support. This initiative is shaping a resilient local food system by equipping individuals with the skills to grow their own food.
🥦 Join us in fostering health, opportunity, and food sovereignty for all. Together, we can make a lasting difference.

🌱 Introducing Sovereignty Sunday, a series where we will explore our Food Sovereignty programming and all the ways we are committed to nurturing a just and resilient local food system. Our mission transcends mere donations; we also empower community members to grow their own food and shape the future of our local food system.
📈 There has been a surge in food bank usage, skyrocketing prices, and marginalized communities are being disproportionately affected… the resilience of the local food system and access to fresh, whole foods directly impact health, economic prospects, and educational outcomes across a lifetime. Pitney Meadows is committed to addressing our comnunity’s food insecurity through three pivotal programs:
🥕 Produce Donations and Cooking Classes: Partnering with over 15 community-based partners, we provide over 90,000 servings of fresh produce annually, accompanied by participatory cooking classes led by local chefs.
🏥 Nutrition Rx Program: In partnership with the Saratoga Community Health Center, the Nutrition Prescription program is a lifeline for many facing food insecurity. It provides patients with essential nutritional knowledge and access to our locally grown, nutrient-dense vegetables.
🪴Sovereign Gardens Initiative: This program aims to create a lasting impact on local food resiliency. We provide plant starts and gardening assistance to community-based partner organizations. Through these partnerships, we equip their staff, clients, and volunteers with the knowledge and skills to create a sustainable food production infrastructure for their clients, members, and/or patients.
🥦 Join us as we nurture communities, foster opportunity, and cultivate a future where everyone has access to nutritious, locally sourced food. Together, we can make a profound difference in the lives of those who need it most.

A few new tools to add to our belt this year: a Dibbler and a 1952 Farmall Cub tractor. The Dibbler is one of the most ingenious hand tools for small scale farmers like us. With its adjustable spacing, we can evenly space out our transplants.
This old tractor is Ian's current pride and joy. We have made a commitment to reduce tillage in our fields, and this tractor allows us to create "beds" for our crops with limited topsoil disturbance.
Our Farmers are at the core of what we do on this Farm in the City. This team is growing and adapting and learning all the time and we are so grateful to have Ian and Kelly leading the way this season. If you are ever on the Farm, make sure to stop and say hello!
Come grow with us!

Did you miss our first Community Supported Conversation? Watch it here and learn more about stewardship initiatives on the Farm.
And don't forget to mark your calendars for our next Community Supported Conversation on March 31st, with guest speaker Acadia Tucker. This session describes the climate changes taking place in our own backyards, and the various steps we can take to boost a garden’s resilience. We will invite you to think of gardening as civic action; by building organically-rich soil and cultivating perennial plants, we can capture greenhouse gases in the very place we’re growing nutritious food!

The Fall season rolled in FAST! The final harvests of storage crops like sweet potatoes and beets, and the planting of early spring crops like garlic have come and gone. With the cold comes a deep sense of gratitude and the ability to take some deep breaths after a busy summer season. Happy Fall everyone!
