Pitney Meadows Community Farm Sowing the seeds of a vibrant, compassionate, spirited, and connected community in Saratoga Springs
(18)

Pitney Meadows Community Farm was founded in 2016 to preserve the last operating farm in Saratoga Springs, and to forge a new mission for the 166-acre property in sustainable farming, education in agriculture, and the training of young farmers. We're off to a fast start with the construction of our 55-bed Community Gardens and a 6,000-square foot high tunnel that serves both as an event space and

greenhouse for growing vegetables. Major priorities going forward include the establishment of our Children's Garden and Greenhouse, renovation of existing farm buildings, and the development of trails along Geyser Creek for education and recreation.

🌅 Recently, we celebrated a beautiful moment made possible by the boundless generosity and vision of Barbara Glaser, Chair of our Advisory Council, founding patron, steadfast supporter, and cherished friend of Pitney Meadows Community Farm.

🌲 Thanks to Barbara, we’ve placed our very first handcrafted cedar Dedication Bench, alongside a young Paper Birch Tree with four stems representing north, south, east, and west. This bench will be inscribed with a heartfelt dedication… “Dedicated to The Advisory Council, Past, Present, and Future. You will Always Have a Place at the Farm.” Positioned perfectly for gazing over the land and soaking in sunsets, this Dedication Bench and Tree is more than just a place to sit—it’s a symbol of Barbara’s love for this land and her unwavering belief in our mission to grow a resilient, inclusive community here at Pitney Meadows. Barbara, we are endlessly grateful to you for all the heart and soul you give to our farm, and for this beautiful gift that will offer peace, reflection, and connection to all who visit!

🌱 Through our Bench Dedication Program, you too can be a part of this legacy. Each bench or tree dedicated on our farm enhances our mission—from supporting education to fostering food sovereignty, creating spaces where all are welcome to sit, breathe, and find connection with nature.

🌻 Barbara, thank you for helping us plant the seeds of a lasting legacy.

🎃 From Fields to Frights: A Halloween Harvest Story! Halloween isn’t just about candy and costumes; it’s rooted deep in the agricultural past. This ancient tradition traces back to the Celtic festival of Samhain, or “summer’s end,” when communities gathered to celebrate the close of the harvest season and prepare for winter. It was a time to honor ancestors, share harvest bounty, and—just like we might dress up and celebrate with treats—ward off mischievous spirits.

🌾 Carving pumpkins, bobbing for apples, and even broomstick-riding witches all have roots in this celebration of farm and field. For example, in old Ireland, people carved faces into turnips and placed them in windows to scare away unfriendly spirits—a tradition that evolved into our modern pumpkin jack-o’-lanterns. And those apples? They weren’t just snacks; they were symbols of luck, love, and good fortune for the year to come!

🧙As we embrace these traditions today, let’s give a nod to the harvest that makes it all possible. Have a happy and haunting Halloween from all of us at Pitney Meadows!

🧊 Time to winterize! We’re so grateful to Skip and Nate from Elite Irrigation in South Glens Falls for stepping up again this year to winterize the Community Gardens! Their generosity helps us prepare our gardens for the winter by blowing out our water lines, clearing them completely so that no water—or ice—remains. Thanks to their support, we can rest easy knowing that our irrigation system is protected from winter damage and ready to go when spring arrives.

🌱 Elite Irrigation is a family-owned business that’s been installing and maintaining sprinkler systems for over 30 years, serving homes and businesses within a 50-mile radius of South Glens Falls/Queensbury. Their dedication to quality has earned them the highest ratings on both Home Advisor and Angie’s List, making them a trusted choice for any irrigation needs.

❄️ If you’re looking to winterize your own water lines this season, we can’t recommend Elite Irrigation enough! Their expertise and commitment to our community have made a world of difference, and we’re grateful for their continued support!

💚 This past week, our team took a road trip to Glynwood in the beautiful Hudson Valley, and it was an incredible experience. We toured their stunning farm, learned about their innovative programs, and spent time with their amazing team, diving deep into conversations about building just and resilient regional food systems.

🌿 The Glynwood Center for Regional Food and Farming is a nonprofit organization that supports food and farming leaders in New York’s Hudson Valley and beyond. Its mission is to cultivate just and resilient regional food systems, helping communities, farmers, and the land thrive together. Glynwood focuses on strengthening local food production within the region while educating a national audience on the importance of regionalizing food and agriculture. Committed to the highest standards of ecosystem, soil, animal, and community well-being, Glynwood promotes regenerative agriculture to benefit the environment, local economies, and human health, which resonates deeply with us here at Pitney Meadows.

💭 We asked tons of questions, listened intently, and reflected deeply, leaving inspired and energized to dream big about the future. It was a day full of learning and connection, and there’s something so powerful about engaging with others who are dedicated to the same goals of achieving a resilient and just local food system.

🌻 A huge thank you to the Glynwood team for welcoming us so warmly, sharing your expertise, and allowing us to see firsthand the incredible impact of your work. Visits like these remind us how essential it is to stay connected with those who share our passion for sustainable agriculture, community well-being, and so much more. We left feeling grateful, inspired, and ready to keep dreaming big for the future. Thank you, Glynwood!

🍎Farm Stand Friday! Apples Are Here! It’s a beautiful Friday at the Farm Stand, and we’re celebrating the arrival of Honey Crisp and Red Delicious apples from Borden Orchards ! These local favorites are crisp, juicy, and bursting with flavor - perfect for snacking, baking, saucing, or adding to your fall salads.

🍎Did you know apples are more than just a tasty treat? They’re packed with fiber, which supports digestion, and antioxidants, which can help reduce inflammation and support your immune system. Regularly eating apples can also help maintain heart health by controlling blood sugar and blood pressure. Plus, the natural compound quercetin found in apples may protect your brain and even reduce airway inflammation!

🍎 Here in New York, there is immense pride in our state’s apples! Since 1976, the apple has been our state’s official fruit, and New York is known for producing nearly 30 million bushels every year across 55,000 acres of orchards. That means when you pick up apples from our Farm Stand, you’re supporting a legacy of local agriculture and a delicious tradition!

🍎 There are endless ways to enjoy apples! Snack on them fresh, perhaps with a slice of cheese for a perfect pairing. Toss them into salads, bake a warm apple crisp, or roast them alongside veggies like sweet potatoes and carrots. You can also make homemade applesauce or bake thin slices into crispy apple chips. The possibilities are endless!

🍎 Alongside these delicious apples, we have a ton of other local products waiting for you at the Farm Stand. Make this weekend all about celebrating the best of our local harvest, and swing by to pick up your favorites! Check out our Farm Stand webpage linked in our bio for available goodies! https://www.pitneymeadowscommunityfarm.org/farm-stand

🍂This week, as proud members of the steering committee of the Adirondack Food System Network (AFSN), we had the pleasure of hosting a vibrant roundtable discussion at Pitney Meadows Community Farm on a beautiful fall day in Saratoga.

☀️ Around 30 food system stakeholders gathered for the second roundtable to share insights, connect, and strategize for the future of our regional food system.

🍁AFSN is a collaborative regional food council dedicated to building a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable food system across the North Country, bringing together diverse voices like farmers, educators, producers, non-profits, policy makers, and more to better understand system-wide challenges, identify gaps, and pursue innovative solutions.

🌱During the roundtable, we connected with one another, engaged in thoughtful conversations about the tools, assets, and resources available, the challenges and risks, and our visions for a more resilient regional food system.

🌾 Thank you to everyone who joined us! Your ideas, passion, and commitment are what make this work possible. Together, we’re building a more vibrant and connected food network across the North Country!

🍯 Our Fall Honey Harvest Party was as sweet as can bee!

🐝 Big thanks to everyone who joined us in the “Wash Pack” this last weekend for a buzzing good time! With Master Beekeeper Anna Knapp leading the way, we dove into the world of beekeeping and got up close with the magic of honey harvesting.

🌻From uncapping the honeycomb to spinning it out in the extractor, we watched that golden goodness flow straight into jars! Everyone got to decorate their own jar, making each one a personalized keepsake of the day’s harvest. It was all about sweet skills, creativity, and sharing the joy of nature’s little miracles together.

💛 Huge shoutout to Anna for sharing her passion, Brian and Nate for their bee-autiful support, and all our fabulous participants who brought so much energy and creativity. We hope you’re savoring your Pitney Meadows honey and showing off your decorated jars!

🌾 As we draw near the end of our Explore to Learn: Writing the Land series, we invite you to join us for the final workshop of the season on Friday, October 25th, from 5:00PM to 6:00PM at Pitney Meadows. Led by Saratoga Springs’ first poet laureate, Joseph Bruchac, this workshop, Nature, Healing, and the Power of Poetry, is a unique opportunity to reflect, connect, and create. Sign up here: https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/UESTAbu1QtDlF2JmOdAVOA

🌻 This final session is a chance to not only express your creativity but also to find a sense of renewal and connection - with nature, with yourself, and with our community. We encourage ages 12+ to participate, and the workshop is offered FREE of charge, with a suggested donation.

🍂 As the landscape shifts into the warm hues of autumn, we’ll gather to explore how poetry can be a pathway to healing, helping us draw inspiration from the natural world and channel it into words that soothe and uplift. Joseph will guide us in observing and capturing moments of tranquility, teaching us how to translate these experiences into poetry that speaks to our emotions and spirit.

🌼 Secure your spot by registering through the link https://secure.lglforms.com/form_engine/s/UESTAbu1QtDlF2JmOdAVOA and let’s come together one last time this season to celebrate the beauty of the changing seasons and the healing power of poetry. We can’t wait to see you there!

🌱 We had our last Harvest Cooking Class for the season, and we wanted to take a moment and celebrate the incredible impact we’ve made together!

🍲As part of our commitment to food sovereignty, we’ve taken our mission beyond our 166-acre farm, bringing our hands-on Harvest Cooking Classes directly to our community partners. So far this season, we’ve proudly donated an estimated 58,000 servings of fresh vegetables, helping ensure that local families have access to healthy, nutritious food. Alongside these donations, our Harvest Cooking Classes have offered participants the chance to learn how to prepare delicious, seasonal meals with the same farm-fresh produce.

🍅 From the Saratoga Senior Center and Shelters of Saratoga, to St. Clement’s Food Pantry, Raymond Watkins Apartment, Shenendehowa Helping Hands Food Pantry, and Malta Community Center, we’ve connected with communities across the region, sharing the joys of cooking and the benefits of eating fresh, local produce.

🥬A huge thank you to Craig, a local chef and nutritionist, who brought his culinary expertise and passion to every class, and to Daniel, our Food Sovereignty and Community Engagement Coordinator, for helping build these vital connections.

💚Together, we’re nurturing a healthier, stronger community—one meal at a time.
