Pitney Meadows Community Farm

Pitney Meadows Community Farm Sowing the seeds of a vibrant, compassionate, spirited, and connected community in Saratoga Springs

Pitney Meadows Community Farm was founded in 2016 to preserve the last operating farm in Saratoga Springs, and to forge a new mission for the 166-acre property in sustainable farming, education in agriculture, and the training of young farmers. We're off to a fast start with the construction of our 55-bed Community Gardens and a 6,000-square foot high tunnel that serves both as an event space and

greenhouse for growing vegetables. Major priorities going forward include the establishment of our Children's Garden and Greenhouse, renovation of existing farm buildings, and the development of trails along Geyser Creek for education and recreation.

✨ Team Tuesday Spotlight! Join us in giving a warm welcome to Graciela, our new Administrative Coordinator at Pitney Meadows Community Farm!

🌱 Graciela brings a wealth of experience and a passion to our team. Originally from Maryland, she grew up on a horse farm outside Baltimore and has called Saratoga Springs home since 2015. With a background managing the Saratoga Farmers’ Market, Graciela has been a driving force behind educational programs, food sovereignty efforts, and market operations.

🌾 When she’s not helping things run smoothly at Pitney Meadows, Graciela loves hiking in the Adirondacks, painting, and playing piano. She’s eager to contribute to our mission and deepen her connection to our vibrant community.

💚 Welcome to the team, Graciela! We’re so excited to have you here!

🥬 Fresh from the fields! You’ll still find a limited selection of our cold-hardy greens at the Farm Stand, winter gems we’re proud to offer. While kale, spinach, and other greens sweeten in chilly weather, here’s the reality of farming in the Northeast….

💚The winter solstice brings us the shortest days of the year. With reduced daylight, plants enter a dormant period.

🥬But don’t worry…. what farmer and author Eliot Coleman calls the Persephone Days will soon come to an end. Named after the Nature Goddess Persephone, who retreated to Hades each winter, causing the earth to grow barren, this is the time of year when shorter days (fewer than 10 hours of sunlight!) halt plant growth. With cold temperatures and limited light, crops rest in dormancy. In just 3-4 weeks though, longer days will bring renewed growth, and before you know it, the soil will be bursting with fresh greens again.

💚This is the rhythm of winter farming: working with nature, planning ahead, and savoring the hardy crops that make it through the cold. Thank you for your patience as we honor the natural rhythms of the season. The land thanks you, too! In the meantime, look at all these awesome offerings available in the Farm Stand now! See you there!

🌱 Intern Project Spotlight: Unveiling the Secrets of Garden Ecosystems! Last summer, Camilla, our amazing Community Gardens intern, dove into a research project that blended her love of gardening with her passion for biology. Visit the link in our bio to learn more about her work during her internship at Pitney Meadows!

🐝From May through August, she documented the interactions between plants and insects, uncovering fascinating insights about the ecosystems at Pitney Meadows Community Farm.

🌸Camilla identified 111 insect species across the gardens, including 75 beneficial pollinators and pest-controlling insects. A standout discovery was how plants like common milkweed attracted 19 different insect species, showing just how interconnected our garden is.

🐞Her research highlighted the importance of understanding which plants attract beneficial insects and which ones help deter pests. This knowledge can help gardeners create more balanced ecosystems by encouraging pollination and natural pest control.

🦋To share her findings, Camilla created a “Plants and Their Insect Visitors” book, available at the Welcome Center and online, and launched an iNaturalist project for everyone to contribute to the farm’s biodiversity.

💚Camilla also created fun ways for people of all ages to get involved, including a “Bug Bingo” game for younger explorers and a detailed “Field Guide” for seasoned gardeners.

🌱 Join us in learning from Camilla’s work and explore the wonders of the garden ecosystem! Thank you for your incredible work and contributions, Camilla!

✨ The first session of Nurtured in Nature ended with a magical evening we’ll never forget! Nurtured in Nature brought young adventurers (K-5) together to discover the magic of the seasons at Pitney Meadows Community Farm! Students explored nature’s wonders through hands-on science, creative projects, and mindful activities. The program nurtured exploration, creativity, and well-being while embracing the rhythm of the farm’s ever-changing landscape.

🌿We celebrated their journey with a beautiful lantern walk. Our Nature Champions proudly lit the way with lanterns they crafted themselves, and families gathered to walk a candlelit path through the farm. It was the perfect way to honor their growth and reflect on the connections they made… with nature and each other.

🌻 This program was made possible by the incredible generosity of Deborah and Dexter Senft - thank you for helping us bring this dream to life. A big thank you as well to our amazing instructors, Leah and Andrew, for guiding these young explorers with such care and passion. And, of course, thank you to the families and our Nature Champions for making these moments so memorable!

💚 We can’t wait for Session 2!

🌿 New at the Farm Stand! Hudson Valley Vinegar!

🍏We’re thrilled to bring a new product to the farm stand, crafted just up the road in Columbia County. Hudson Valley Vinegar began in 2014 in the tasting room of New York’s first farm distillery, Harvest Spirits, where third-generation apple farmer and craft distiller Derek Grout embarked on a journey to create traditional balsamic vinegar using his family’s homegrown apples.

🍎Stop by and give these incredible vinegars a try. Whether you’re drizzling over a fresh salad, pairing with your favorite cheese, or adding a tangy twist to your cooking, Hudson Valley Vinegar adds a taste of the region to every dish.

🥗Come on down to our Farm Stand, where you can discover the flavors of our region! Come see what’s fresh and local today! See you soon!
